You could be right but I don't see anybody not wanting to come play for Larkey and Jones at Harlan County High. If the hiring would have been different I might have been concerned but I don't think it could of worked out any better.:dancingpa

 

Having been on both sides of this fence, I honestly think that if HC ends up with even half of what is hoped for with Jones, Larkey, new facilities, etc. then any kid/family would be very much unwise to leave for HHS, especially considering sitting out, paying high tuition and the lack of sports emphasis and offerings at HHS right now.

 

In fact, I would think a serious athlete would contemplate joining HC from HHS as opposed to the other way around. As stated, the primary athletic reason to go to HHS would be to play as a "big fish" attempting to succeed in the smaller pond of Class A Football and the All "A" Classic in basketball and baseball. Lately, though, with the exception of football on most years, Harlan hasn't been able to promise that.

Hopefully in 2009 Bell County can play Harlan Co. Maybe even actually develop into a somewhat local rivalry for Bell Co. who has none since Middlesboro and Corbin won't play the Bobcats anymore.

The Larkey/Hilton connection is probably what will make this series happen. Here's hoping for many years of great games between the Bears and Bobcats.

I wonder, if a kid who goes to say one of the 3 high schools that closed lives closer to Harlan City than Harlan Co. would they have to sit out a year to go to Harlan City schools? I don't know anything about the geography of where the new school is at, but was just wondering.

 

 

Doubt that will be a factor the new school is only 4-5 miles away from Harlan Ind.

The only difference is how much easier Harlan Indepenents path is to deep in the playoffs in 1A football is compared to what Harlan County will be facing.

 

I'd much rather have to worry about regions with Hazard, Pikeville, Williamsburg, LCA, Campbellsville... rather than a regions with Belfry, Sheldon Clark, Somerset, Breathitt County, Mason County and Russell... and once Harlan move sup to 5A then you throw even stiffer competition.

How did those teams do in Class A last year? If my memory serves me correct EKUAlum, every one of those 1A teams you listed made a deeper run than those three combined.

The Bears will do just fine in 5A ball. I look for them to be in the hunt for a district title every season in 5A. They will be in a district with teams like Clay, Whitley, ect. They can play with those teams and anything can happen when a team from up north comes to the mountains for a playoff game.

What eaglenation is saying, is by combining two A schools and one AAA school does not mean that you will be winning by default. Belfry has decades of tradition to build on great feeder system and a stadium that is second to none. HC at this point in time has none of these, but should they successful? Yes they should but to crown them with titles before one game is played is a bit over the top. And Lungbuster before you write off Harlan Ind. remember that they have more overall success and tradition than all of the other county schools combined, there is one thing that has remained a constant through out the last 70-80 years while other schools in Harlan county come and go Harlan High School still stands today. So remember when you are talking smack you can be smacked back.

I never recall crowning Harlan County High with any titles. I am just excited about Harlan County High School and the opportunity it brings to the kids of the county. To be Honest I don't care anything about Harlan City. If they win it all ( good for them). It they lose them all, it really has no bearing on myself.
