KHSAA Football draft alignment for 2009 and 2010:

Featured Replies

I team playing down is not even comprehendable. If teams were allowed to play down, you would have 60 5A schools and two 6A schools. And like wise you would have a lot of 1A schools and not many 2A schools.[\QUOTE]

Not necessarily. But you need to look at what is going on in other states. Its called economic reality. Football or not, its about money.

I like the 6A 16-team super class. That would solve some issues.

Beechwood's district gets better and better every yr. Last yr they add Brossart and now WV gets added.

I bet they wish they moved up to 2A last yr when they had the chance. W/the multi-million dollar complex's they are getting ready to build it reminds me of an old saying, "if you build it, they will come!" They will be ready to play 6A in a few yrs.

A tall order for Walton no doubt, but also a opportunity. To be the best you must play the best. :flame:

Not sure why Campbellsville is in the east when they are hour from Louisville. They could get to Frankfort faster than WIlliamsburg. Makes no sense.

Also makes no since why Paris and Lex. Christian wouldn't play in the north. It is closer than Fairview.

Doesn't look like any changes occurred in Class A other than the additions.

Still not a fan of Six classes

Ya but how fast could they get to Bracken County, that would be a lot further than Williamsburg.

They did not have the chance to move up to 2A last year in reality. There was no geographical justification for them to move up to 2A so it was NOT going to happen even if they had requested it, which I'm sure they were aware of.

I think you are missing my point.

I guess I am. What's your point?

I will concede and say the highest level with in travel proximity. I just don't think teams should be allowed to pick the district and level they would like to play. I understand logistics and money issues. I liked the old 4 class play were you are suppose to allignment.

Just so there is no confusion created on here by a part of your post, teams moving up don't get to pick what district or even necessarily what level they want to play. Rather, they only make a request to play at a certain level. For example, if Highlands had asked to play at the 6A level in the Lexington district last year, the request would have been denied, as there was a 5A district in the immediate vicinity that they could be placed in. The concept of moving up is that the KHSAA, where possible, will allow a school to move up the the next closest level that has a district in the geographical area that can accomodate another team to reduce travel costs. The quality of competition will not be a factor. In Highlands case the closest level with an available district was 5A and the northern Ky. district. Another factor the KHSAA considers in addition to the transportation costs is the amount of time kids have to spend on buses. That is something that seems to be forgotten in this debate. The less time kids have to spend on buses, late at night coming home from distant district games, sometimes on very poor country roads, the better. And as a parent of a player, I fully support that line of thinking. I really don't want my son coming back late at night on a bus traveling some curving country road if it can be avoided. I fully realize that its not always possible for some teams to avoid long trips if we want to accept the validity of multi class concept and I realize the more classes we have, the likelihood of further travel due to the division of the schools into more classes which the coaches really pushed hard for.

You need to know that there is a ying and yang situation, if you will, going on at the KHSAA. The coaches want more classes and cross district competition, which increases travel costs and travel times. The supers, concerned about travel costs and time, want to do whatever is possible to minimize those cost and travel. For now, I think the decisions of the KHSAA are based on trying to balance those two sides and I agree that the results at times appear inconsistent. Who knows, if the amount of travel costs and time continue to increase, the supers (who obviously have the most clout with the KHSAA) may in the future force the KHSAA to go back to 4 classes and in district competition for the first two rounds. I know that some supers were okay going along with the wishes of their coaches and accepting the cross district competition in the first two rounds because those transportation costs are not "budgeted" costs; rather they come out of the gate of the playoff games. I personally think that is misguided reasoning and somewhat illogical, as last year's gate receipts using in district competition games were up and the travel costs were down, which means more profit, and thus more money that could have been placed in the athletic programs, "budgeted" or not. Now that we are going to cross district competition, I fully expect gates to decrease, travel costs to increase and of course travel time to also increase. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the KHSAA, due to pressure by supers, reverses course again in the future.

As for the post by blockbuster in re Somerset and Madisonville, Somerset and Madisonville may very well been trying to duck someone if that's what you were stating. Its impossible for me, you or the KHSAA Board members to know their true motivation. But I will say, placing them in 3A where they have to beat the likes of Central, Breathitt County, Belfry, Russell and Mason County to win a state championship, was not necessarily giving Somerset an easy road. Wouldn't you agree?

The proposal has Fleming County moving back to 3-7 (with Mason County, Russell, Lewis County, East Carter and West Carter) and away from 3-6 (with Breathitt County, Estill County, Powell County and Magoffin County). Fleming's "natural rivals" are in 3-7; but I believe that Fleming petitioned to move to 3-6 a couple of years ago (3-6 at the time included Cawood, but the Harlan County consolidation obviously changed that).

According to the linked article, Fleming County's coach was "shocked" and "caught off guard", and is undecided about whether or not to appeal.

What is so appalling from what I have heard, is a bunch of large school coaches signing a letter asking for bracketing to be rigged to where, no matter the geography, the two large parochial schools always play early, with most of the letter signers being from schools with 750 to 1100 boys. I doubt they get any sympathy at all from the rest of the five classes.

Why is this appalling? The gap between the the two parochial schools and the rest of 6A is far bigger than the gap between any other class.

The difference between Dunbar (the largest public school in 6A) and St X the marginally smaller private school is that St X has 240 more boys. The difference between the smallest and the largest of each other class is 1A=200 2A=90 3A=80 4A=90 5A=150 and for 6A=780.

The fact is that per the class system St X and T don't numerically belong in 6A they belong in a bigger nonexistent class. I don't think it is appalling that some coaches are asking for special circumstances.

If the reason that the KHSAA allowed schools to move up was to decrease travel how do they justify letting Cov. Cath move when in their original district their average travel distance was 61.85 miles, and they moved Grant Co out creating an average travel distance of 69.17 for them in their new district. Had they let them stay and kept Cov. Cath out their average travel would have been 33.21 miles. There is no doubt that Highlands moving into 5A decision can be justified based on proximity, but when you consider the way Grant County was displaced it just looks like the KHSAA valued Cov. Cath.'s finances more than Grant County and all their new district teams.

I am not picking on either of these schools as I actually respect them (at least 1 of them) I just live in NKY and these are the schools I know that requested to move. Like LN said it is impossible for the Board of Control to know everyone's true motive to wanting to move so I think they should let everyone move up or No one move up.

Like I said let's go back to 4 classes play where you fall.

Super class! I agree with this also

I will tell you that it is my understanding from a reliable KHSAA person that as for the Grant Co getting displaced comment and their increase mileage due due to the move, Grant Co (and I believe I was told it was their super) was asked about their possible move and they were for it. So with that "blessing" CovCath and Highlands were moved into 5A and Grant Co moved to another 5A district. If Grant Co had said "no" to the move, I'm told that something else would have had to be done or else a 6 team district created, which would not have been all that unusual. I believe under the proposed alignment, there are approx. 8 districts with 6 teams.

And are you saying that someone else from N. Ky requested a move up but was denied? If so, whom?

And again, its my understanding that the KHSAA didn't worry about motives. They only worried about mileage. Since Grant Co was okay with the additional mileage and the move, they were moved. Perhaps in hindsight, the KHSAA shouldn't have moved Grant and just created a 6 team district in N. Ky.

For purposes of disclosure, would the posters advocating the position that teams should not be able to be move up mind telling us which schools they support/follow/have sons playing football. With a little work, I'm sure we could search posts and be able to make that determination, but I'd appreciate the posters just telling us to save us time.

I never said or implied any team in NKY requested a move.

Does my opinion not matter if I support say Scott, Holmes, or Dixie.

I am not a parent of, fan of,or alumini of, any NKY school I respect the accomplishments of schools like Beechwood, Highlands, NCC, and I love High school sports, and I like rooting for underdogs. I miss the Kentucky Post because they made following NKY high schools easier to follow.

I just don't think anyone should be able to move up, and last time I checked I am entitled to my opinion no matter who I support. I just don't look at the world as if you question anything these programs do or get you are wrong.

My opinion is not an attack on those who want to move but how about on a flawed system that doesn't let everyone move just the ones they deem acceptable. Lloyd and Newport had to travel for years did you take up their cause as well?
