This is Dick the Bruiser, the greatest brawler ever to step into a wrestling ring. The Bruiser was an icon of pop culture in the midwest from the 1950's until the early 1980's. Portraying the beer drinking, working class tough guy, he was a classic wrestling character and his persona was a natural fit for wrestling's transition from a quasi- sport to a form of entertainment suited for television.

 

Dick the Bruiser was "the world's most dangerous wrestler" and proved as much by beating up any nancy boy wrestler who had the brazen stupidity to pass through the Indianapolis territory, e.g. Ivan Koloff, Gene Kiniski, Ernie Ladd, Harley Race, and Bruiser Brody. He beat the monicker of "Bruiser" out of Brody and left him with the name "King Kong."

 

When he got bored with all the nancy boys passing through Indy, he went to St. Louis and whipped up on wrestlers like Dick Murdoch and Ken Patera. While in St. Louis, the Bruiser had the audacity and comical fortitude to mock Ric Flair by parading around in Flair's effeminate robe while doing the Nature Boy's signature nancy boy strut.

Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. Helped make Ric Flair one of the truly bad guys in wrestling. Those two made each other.

 

I remember seeing Bobo Brazil fight Pampero Firpo. (I think that was his name. Crazy hair and the claw was his hold) Firpo through him out of the ring and he landed on my mom's lap. So cool !

I was a huge wrestling fan growing up of the NWA and WCW and WWF. Watching Gordon Solie and his interviews on TBS w/Magnum TA and Dussy Rhoades--haha--and Nikita Koloff against the Four Horseman!

 

Saturday morning wrestling w/Lance Russell and Dave Brown w/Jerry "The KING" Lawler, Bill Dundee, Tommy "Wildfire" Rich, The Fabulous Ones, The Rock-n-Roll Express. Just to name a few!

 

Plus, all the Monday night wars!

 

I loved Saturday morning wrestling. Wrestling on Tuesday nights at the Louisville Gardens was awesome. My favorite match was Bill Dundee and Rocky "Soul Man" Johnson vs Tommy "Wildfire Rich" and Gorgeous George for the tag team titles. Wrestling wont be the same without the Nature Boy! My kids make fun of me for being a Flair fan.

Do you not enjoy anything that is fake? TV shows, movies, plays, Pamala Anderson's chest, etc...

 

 

While much of the action and the outcomes are scripted in pro wrestling, there is still a lot of athleticism involved. Also. I am sure a lot of the wrestlers would tell you that the many injuries they have sustained over the years is far from fake.

 

Give me pro wrestling (especially the old-school stuff) over that boring Ultimate Fighting crap anyday.

Wow, I haven't seen that name in a while.

Of course everyone knows it is Sting......

 

If it wasn't for the Sting/Flair rivalry WCW would have never fulitly got off the ground. If I am not mistaken these two also squared off in the last WCW match ever, solidifying what had been one of the best wrestling rivalries ever. Kind of ending it on a good note so to speak.

I voted for Harley Race. I can remember going to the old Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis with my older brother to watch matches between these two. It was nothing for their matches to last an hour.

You're right, NWO. That is another one of the many changes in wrestling over the years. It was not uncommon for matches back then to last 45 min to an hour. If you recall, two out of three fall matches were very common back then as well(and they almost always went three).

Ric Flair was the first wrestler I saw on TV in a match. I was down in VIrginia at my Great Grand father's and that was a big deal in those days. Got to watch those wrestlers he'd always say. Man those guys would kill each other back then. Chairs would be flying along with the smashing of the announcer's table.
