February 21, 200818 yr Everyone loves to hate teams with class its pure jealousy...No one would here would turn down a chance to play at Duke or attend its college. Duke wins people don't like it. In turn people like to cry and undermine an institution which The University Of Duke is...AN INSTITUTION. The University Of Kentucky couldnt hold a candle to Duke academically or match the success of the people who graduate from Duke. CEO's, Doctors, etc. Not putting down Kentucky but the hatred Duke receives is actually a compliment because it proves to us fans that we have the program no one wants to see win so we know they are watching. :flame:
February 21, 200818 yr I don't like any teams except for UK. I choose to hate the ones I have to hear about the most. UL, IU, OSU, and Duke.
February 21, 200818 yr So you've got examples from ONE game from both boards?...You're going to need ALOT more than that to even get close to justifying your argument.... Well for IU fans to take timeout from their mass panic to bother to start 4 threads on a Duke game is pretty impressive. I could only go back a few pages on the UL message board. Your argument is pretty weak--are we to believe that was the only time the UL fans made posts like that and they just happened to have 5 anti-Duke threads this one time? C'mon your better than that. As I've said before Duke is the most hated program in the country and you'll find a higher percentage of anti-Duke postings on almost any college basketball forum.

If you're telling me that the mass hate for Duke around here is justified, I'm just going to disagree....103 years of basketball and only 16 meetings hardly justifies a rivalry....

February 21, 200818 yr They played a big game about 40 years ago. Lets see Duke/UK or UC/San Fran. Yeah I see your point:rolleyes:
February 21, 200818 yr What does that have to do with Duke? Coach K is one of the classiest coaches in the history of NCAA basketball.
February 21, 200818 yr Coach K is one of the classiest coaches in the history of NCAA basketball. DUKIE:fight: Actually the interview he did with Cawood is as memorable as the game itself.
February 22, 200818 yr If you're telling me that the mass hate for Duke around here is justified, I'm just going to disagree....103 years of basketball and only 16 meetings hardly justifies a rivalry.... I didn't say that it is a rivalry--not once. I've tried to make the point over and over that Duke is the most hated program in the country. The NCAA Tourney games between UK and the 92 defeat in particular cause a higher percentage of UK fans to hate Duke. If Laettner had hit that shot against the 94 or 95 teams it probably wouldn't have been as big a deal. However, the UK fan base named that particular team "The Unforgettables", hung their numbers in the rafters, elected one of them as Commissioner of Agriculture and wanted another hired as Head Coach--they hold a special place in almost all UK fans hearts. Just as Laettner and Duke do, just a much different section. As I've demonstrated it isn't just UK fans that hate Duke and celebrate their losses your own fan base is guilty as well--along with the rest of the college basketball community. But not once did I say that UK and Duke were rivals.

February 22, 200818 yr I think there are several factors that go into a rivalry and not just the number of games played between the two. A lot of people point to the 1992 "Laettner" game as the reason why UK fans hate Duke. I can see that. Perhaps the most liked team in the history of UK basketball that was 2.1 seconds away from the Final Four -- just three years removed from the lowest point in the program's history. It's like a youth group that builds a home for an elderly woman only to see someone vandalize and rob it the night before she moves in. The seed was planted there. Of course, Duke was also in the midst of the most successful run in their program's history, and it was that run, coupled with UK's probation that allowed Duke to supplant Kentucky as THE premier basketball program in the nation. A UK win over Duke that night in Philadelphia may have kept that from happening, but as we know, it did not. From a UK perspective, think about how the landscape of college basketball would have changed had Laettner bricked the shot with 2.1 seconds left. UK could have stemmed the tide of Duke's surpassing UK in college basketball supremecy. Think about the teams UK fans love to hate...Duke, North Carolina, Louisville, Indiana, UCLA. All schools with multiple banners hanging from their rafters -- and all perceived as a threat to supplant Kentucky from the ranks of the college basketball elite. But the feelings of UK fans toward Duke isn't unique. Steeler and Cowboy fans hate each other and they haven't played a meaningful game in a while. Lakers and Celtics are on different coasts and don't like each other. Do you think UCONN fans like Duke? Really? Think Cubs fans like the Marlins? Do I think UK and Duke are a rivalry on the court? No. Are they one off the court? Sure. And it has everything to do with the 1992 game and what Duke did to Kentucky's favorite team and their chance to supplant Duke atop the college basketball mountain.
