February 21, 200818 yr I can only speak for myself and that is that I don't even speak of UK in Duke threads unless it being pushed onto me..Like I said before, I'm a Duke fan, but cheer on UK in all their games, even been to a few. I'm not a Duke fan but don't have any hatred for them as some do.I don't have any reason to cheer for them and don't really feel that I have a reason to root against them. They are just another team to me. Maybe I'm just too young for that game to mean that much to me. Like I said earlier, I would much rather have had Duke beat us on a last second shot this year than the Vandy or our other horrible losses.
February 21, 200818 yr Kind of funny the media finds it poignant to replay that one shot over and over again. You guys really need to get over it. It was one of the greatest moments in sports history. I don't think too many Clemson fans hold a deathwish for Tate George these days. I doubt USC fans care much about James Forrest. Most UofL fans don't have the first clue who US Reed is. Those guys' shots are replayed just as many times each NCAA season as Laettner's. And I don't buy all the carping about the Timberlake stomp. Had UK won the game, nobody would even remember it. It's all a bunch of sour grapes that, sadly, two NCAA titles and an equally memorable NCAA win over Duke couldn't ease the pain of.
February 21, 200818 yr Which ones? 4 comes to mind off the top of my head. In 1966 Duke and UK met in the Final 4 with UK winning and taking the title of being the bad guy with the all white team facing the all black team. In 1978, Duke and UK met up in the National title game. UK knocked off Duke to win its first title in 20 years. In 1992, Duke and UK met in the greatest college basketball game ever played in many people's opinion. In 1998, UK came back from being down 17 with 8 minutes left to beat Duke for a trip to the Final 4 and a National title. I don't know if you will be able to find 2 teams with more memorable NCAA tournament games than that. That being said its not a rivalry, but with Duke being so overtalked about on ESPN it gets old.
February 21, 200818 yr I started disliking Duke the year prior to them beating UK in the regional final(or whatever year they beat UNLV in the final 4)..............Laetner and the adoring media were the reasons.
February 21, 200818 yr Which ones? 1998 UK 86 Duke 84 South Regional Finals 1992 Duke 104 UK 103 OT East Regional Finals 1980 Duke 55 UK 54 Mideast Regional 1978 UK 94 Duke 88 National Title Game 1966 UK 83 Duke 79 National Semi-Finals That's 5 times with the largest margin of victory being 6 points. Throw into the mix that the lowest that any of the teams were ranked when they played was Duke at #14 in 1980, every other time both teams were in the top 10 and you have some memorable games. In three of those games the winner ended up being National Champion in addition to UK being Runner-Up in 1966. That's a pretty extensive history of high profile games between two teams in the post season.

So the last game was 10 years ago? 2 of those are 30 years old or more:lol::lol:, San Francisco and UC don't hate each other.

February 21, 200818 yr So the last game was 10 years ago? 2 of those are 30 years old or more:lol::lol:, San Francisco and UC don't hate each other. So 98 and Deuce have the right to tell an entire fan base who they can and cant like? Sounds reasonable.
February 21, 200818 yr They play every year about 30 times and are in the same division. When was the last Duke UK game? Yes, the Red Sox and Yankees do play 18 (not 30) times each season but until 2004 the Yankees fans didn't consider the Red Sox much of a rival because the Sox hadn't ever beaten the Yankees when it mattered. What I was trying to get at was Dent's homerun placed an inordinate amount of hatred on a guy that hit .247 with 40 Homeruns in 12 seasons. That 1978 team was a very beloved team to Red Sox fans just like the 1992 Kentucky team was to UK fans. I think that has as much to do with it, also like I said Duke is the most hated team in college basketball so you're going to find more venom directed at them than most other non-rivals by basketball fans everywhere.
February 21, 200818 yr Because one shot 16 years ago is the cause of hatred for Duke on this site... If the same thing had happened to the Cards, then you would not react the same way?
February 21, 200818 yr So the last game was 10 years ago? 2 of those are 30 years old or more:lol::lol:, San Francisco and UC don't hate each other. San Francisco hasn't been good enough to matter either way for decades. I remember 4 of the UK/Duke matchups very vividly. The thing is there's not another team that has staged as many memorable NCAA Tourney games with UK--that is undeniable. If you're a true fan of your team you remember games like that. Ask a Pittsburgh Steeler fan or a Cowboy fan that is old enough to remember the games in the 70's how they feel about the other team. Jim?
February 21, 200818 yr So 98 and Deuce have the right to tell an entire fan base who they can and cant like? Sounds reasonable. That's pretty much been the rule around here for a while. If you don't agree with their point of view then you are viewed as an irrational ran. Not liking Duke is fun. That particular game in which many refrer to was etched in many young UK fans minds as thier first real memories of their Cats. I think it's what makes college basketball fun.
February 21, 200818 yr It's fierce man... Name another two high profile programs that have met that many times and played that many close games in the NCAA Tourney over the years. Just because you guys are in your 20's and you either weren't around or don't remember them doesn't mean they're no longer relevant to those that do.
February 21, 200818 yr Author I think it's also important to note a few years ago, when UK started the series with UNC they were trying to work it out with Duke and Duke refused the home and home idea for the series, which goes back to the article and the lack of road games Duke has played the last several years.
