Tom Larkey to Harlan?

Featured Replies

Its all the way out except for the announcement.Heard it was too the tune of some sort of position worth around $63,000, not to mention what he gets for retirement. And the wife got a job, with a substanstial raise. Thats coming from a very respected coach who is very close to Larkey.

If that is true, then I say good for him and thanks for the memories!:thumb:

60k is close to what that total package is, including retirement. He has said it was nearly a 30k raise from this previous year. Regardless it is a good chunk to Coach football.

Larkey is a retired teacher he may make 50,000 if not more from that alone. I think I heard he will be hired as a Classified employee so he can keep his retirement and draw money from Harlan County as well. He may make around 6 figures when you add his retirement and his coaching duties at Harlan is what I have heard.

Sounds like Coach Larkey is making a fine decision for he and his family's economic well being.

Anyone will not make 50k from being a retired teacher, maybe an Administrator might. Regardless of the exact number he will be well compensated and deservedly so.

They just average your five highest years and use that multiplier formula. If you teach about 32 years or around that by a year or so then you will actually be working for for no money. They also average your coaching styping in with your retirement so it is very easy to make that money. If you retire from being a Fayette County head coach and you hit 32 years or so then 50,000 would be a major pay cut.

Larkey has been making WAY MORE than 50,000 since he has retired at Rockcastle counting his retirement and his 100 day substitute teacher contract. Good thing about the Public School Education is the ability to double dip when you "retire" and Larkey has been doing that and will continue doing that but will make even more now.

Could someone change the title from Harlan to Harlan County. It's no big deal but a little misleading.

Without speculating on whether or not this is a done deal or not, it would be a great great great hire for Harlan County High School. Coach Larkey is one of the state's best.

thank you! Harlan High is Harlan Independent. Harlan County High is the new school. It would have been better for both if the powers had picked Southern Highlands, or Harlan Central instead.

I think Southern Hills was one of the original options. The Highlanders was discussed as a possible nickname, and it was my favorite.

Harlan could always change back to Mount Pleasant to avoid the confusion.

Nobody wants to be called Highlands! ;)

What are you doing talking about one of the secret teacher perks and breaking the code of silence? You are getting off message: teachers are way underpaid; every student is a discipline problem; no teacher leaves the school building until 7 every night and gets in at 6 am in order to get all their work finished, and every teachers works every day during summer breaks without pay getting ready for the upcoming school year. There are no perks to teaching. Teachers only become teachers because they love the kids. Now get back on message before a KEA agent sees your post.:D:D:D

Why is Harlan Independent and HC not playing next season?:

I have seen and heard for many many years Harlan Ind. being called Harlan County when playing up north or outside Southeatern Kentucky. People have been off for a long time as Harlan is very different form Cawood, Cumberland and or Evarts. Hopefully since they are only two schools maybe people outside our area will be able to Understand we now have Harlan County and Harlan Ind. Its really not that hard. For the record my choice was MINERS but it got shot down. Harlan County High is just fine.

I have been holding my tongue because I didn't want to curse this hiring. However, since both the Rockcastle and Harlan papers, along with the Lex. paper and several TV stations have reported it I must say WOW! This is a tremendous hire for Harlan County High. Things are really starting to take off and I am so happy for the football players of the new school. We seem to have landed one of the best Coaches in the state. Coach Larkey is a living Legend. We not only have a great building to start with but also a great coach. If the other jobs go as well as this first one look out for Harlan County.

Go BEARS.
