I'm not so sure the AFC is that much better than the NFC from top to bottom JMO. They just have the one dominate team and a couple of pretty good teams. The Chargers made it to the championship game so that can't say much for your conference because they weren't that good.

 

That argument doesn't fly at all when you consider that the AFC has sent a wild card team to the Super Bowl two straight years and beat the NFC's best. The AFC is better at the top and all the way down...believe it. That doesn't mean the NFC can't win at all...anything can happen in these games, but on the whole, the AFC is clearly better.

Put Akili Smith on the Patriots this year and he makes them 8-8...:lol:

 

Peyton IS the franchise but I think Harrison, Wayne, Clark, James, Addai, Freeney, and Bob Sanders might be a part of the reason for their steady improvement. True, Eli already had a running game and solid defense in place. But you're not asking the question LAST YEAR, we're asking now. He is the BIGGEST reason that they're in the Super Bowl by playing mistake free football and making huge plays yesterday. What else has changed since last year?

Look, it's still Peyton, like I said, I just think it's a somewhat close comparison.

 

I really can't see how anyone can say it's close at this point...Peyton is in the argument as one of the best QB's ever and Eli may not be a top 10 QB in the current NFL...in fact, until the last month, some people may not have had him in the top 20. Four or five good games, playoffs or not, don't erase all of that...

 

I'll give the guy tremendous credit for what he's done and how he's playing. He could very well get himself in the discussion before it's all said and done. Who knows? Leading his team to victory in the Super Bowl against this Patriots team would certainly boost his resume, but still wouldn't put him ahead of Peyton.

 

Take it for what it is, but let's not get carried away. Eli is making big strides and deserves a ton of credit...but he's not at Peyton's level. Heck, Tom Brady had to win three Super Bowls before most people would start putting him on the same level and that was before Peyton had even won one himself...it's amazing how much weight that last name (Manning) carries.

ESPN announcers were talking trades, benching and limiting his playing time 2 weeks prior to the playoffs. Now they act if they never said a thing. Another reason I hate Sportscenter, too many opinions from too many people and they never admit they were wrong.

Let us not pretend that Eli has been as solid as he has been the past 4 games his entire career... heck, even for this season young Eli has thrown a lot of picks and been inconsistent. Hopefully he has changed his approach, but for now the last few games are more of an exception than the rule.

 

I am not going to try and use stats in my argument. Strictly a look and feel test. And if Eli feels like the stronger of the two (even though he has now made a Superbowl faster), I do not know what to tell you.

This is exactly how I feel as well. One good 5 game stretch does not erase all of my memories of Eli throwing the ball into coverage, making poor reads, and generally looking inept. There is a reason that my fantasy league named him Eli "Picks" Manning. And its not because he's better than Peyton.

I still don't think he is better than Peyton. I will say he APPEARS, to act "naive" enough to not let outside pressures effect him, that leads to brilliant things, and sometimes head scratchers as well. That said, they both are pretty darned good, while Peyton still carries the torch right now.
