Eli better than Peyton?!?

Featured Replies

Peyton on his first 4 years

Completions are 1357-2226, 16,418 yards, 111 td's, 81 ints

Eli

Completeions are 987-1805, 11,385 yards, 77 td's, 64 ints

I'd say that's pretty far off...

I'd say they're not...

1st 3 full regular season stats:

Eli: 892/1608 (55.4%), 10342 YDs, 71 TDs, 55 INTs,

Peyton: 1014/1679 (60.4%), 12287 YDs, 85 TDs, 58 INTs

Eli fumbled more and was sacked a little more as well. Also, this is including Peyton's rookie year (which was not good) and I discarded Eli's rookie year (he only played 9 games) which would bring him down much more.

Then there's this:

Eli--3 playoff wins, 1 SB appearance

Peyton--0 and 0

In fact, Peyton didn't get 1 playoff win until his 6th season.

Theres a pretty big difference in the AFC and the NFC...

That's true. But remember how everyone blasted Peyton for not winning the big one for so long and his poor performance in the big ones while Eli has won 2 big ones. I'd still say it's Peyton but it's a little closer than people are saying just for this fact.

Peyton. Next.

Take Eli away from the Giants and insert Akili Smith. Giants are probably a middle of the road team, 8-8, which makes them a playoff contending team in the NFC most years.

Take Peyton away and insert Akili Smith. Colts would drop to a cellar dwelling team and never make the playoffs in the AFC.

Look at it this way, Peyton is THE reason that the Colts turned the corner. Look at their records before he got there and the steady improvement after his arrival. Can we say the same for Eli in his first 3/4 years? Is he THE reason that the Gmen have had success? If you'd have asked this question last year, people in NY would have told you he was THE reason for their LACK of success. What a difference a year makes......

Peyton already won one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :dancingpa :dancingpa

That's great, I like Peyton and I was rooting for them to win it last year (after the Giants were eliminated).

Eli didn't play a full year in his first season...

Ok, here are a few of Eli's stellar games this year, to be "stellar" the QB rating had to fall below 70.0

Opponent Comp/Attempts Yards TD INT's Rating Fumbles

Wash 21/36 232 1 2 63.7 0

Phil 14-26 135 1 1 65.4 0

Miami 8-22 59 0 0 44.9 1

Minn 21-49 273 1 4 33.8 0

Chicago 16-27 195 1 2 63.0 1

Washington 18-53(34%nice) 184 1 0 51.1 1

Buff 7-15 111 0 2 32.2 5

Once again, you can't just post stats and think that tells the entire story.

In the Washington game, for some reason, the Giants coaching staff decided to throw the ball 53 times in 20-30 MPH winds.

In the Miami game it was raining and the field was TERRIBLE. The NFL's bright idea of playing in England was a failure.

In Buffalo the weather was terrible too, as Edwards of the Bills played awful as well.

Those three games I understand why he played bad. The other ones were just bad games.

Because you didn't name any AFC teams. You picked 7 NFC teams that just happen to have a combined 22-6 record against the AFC. Most of which was the AFC's worse teams.

And some of those 7 NFC teams weren't exactly great teams. A few of them weren't even playoff teams. It's not like I picked the NFC's worst vs the AFC's best. I think I included Arizona, and Philly in those 7 teams.

I disagree completely on the Akili Smith example. Insert him in to any team and that team will stink. He's terrible, and I don't know how you would expect a guy like that to win more than 4 games as an NFL Starter.

Put Akili Smith on the Patriots this year and he makes them 8-8...

Peyton IS the franchise but I think Harrison, Wayne, Clark, James, Addai, Freeney, and Bob Sanders might be a part of the reason for their steady improvement. True, Eli already had a running game and solid defense in place. But you're not asking the question LAST YEAR, we're asking now. He is the BIGGEST reason that they're in the Super Bowl by playing mistake free football and making huge plays yesterday. What else has changed since last year?

Look, it's still Peyton, like I said, I just think it's a somewhat close comparison.

I'm not so sure the AFC is that much better than the NFC from top to bottom JMO. They just have the one dominate team and a couple of pretty good teams. The Chargers made it to the championship game so that can't say much for your conference because they weren't that good.

Actually it's not my conference. The Packers are my team. I just it for what it is.

I can agree that Eli's lack of turning the ball over and incremental improvement is the biggest reason they are playing in the SB.

I disagree on the players you named, mostly because the vast majority if not all of them, weren't there when Peyton came to town. They have come in and added to the mix, making the Colts better. But again, all or most of these guys have missed time this year or last (except Peyton). Yet the Colts keep on winning.

I think I can answer this question best with another question. If you were a GM starting an NFL franchise next year would you want Peyton going into his 5th year in the league, or Eli going into his 5th year in the league? Personally, I think this one is a no brainer.

Eli did a lot more than "managing" the game last night. That suggestion makes me sick. He threw many GREAT passes last night in FREEZING temperatures. Below ZERO temperatures. Give him some credit where credit is due.

He did manage the game. He did it well too I might add. I am giving him credit, but lets not get carried away. I think their defense won that game for them more than Eli's GREAT passes. The defense took away GB's running game and that is what got them to the SB.

I agree, I'd take Peyton but mainly because we know 9 years down the road what he does. The Colts have gotten better as they have added players but he wasn't going to get it done by himself.

Here's a question back to you...think about this...what if Eli wins the Super Bowl? Is it really a no brainer? Eli with decent stats, coming of age, in the playoffs every year, wins the big one, etc. Peyton (in year 4), big numbers, has NEVER won a playoff game, has NEVER won a big game period, etc.
