Tony Franklin System

Featured Replies

Valdosta State is the only team I know of that has won a Championship at any level, running the "System" strictly as their offense. Even Hoover Ala. incorporated more running ala Urban Meyer etc in their reign. It is just not a very physical approach when you start playing teams that match up to you later in the year.

BYU started the system with LaVelle Edwards. Mumme visited there often and moved it to the shotgun. Mumme also left the Y (TE) on the right side all the time and the X (WR) on the left all the time. This was done to increase practice reps coming from the same side of the field all the time. Mumme didn't run the zone read ala Texas and Vince Young. Franklin was on that staff and he has made it into a no huddle system with color coded armbands that tell the WR exactly what to do on each play. He has also upgraded the run game. Leach runs a lot more jet sweep stuff with it and both have added (especially Franklin) more trips stuff. The beauty of all of these systems is the amount of reps they get in practice. If you ever went to Mumme's practices it was a thing of art as far as the amount of reps the players got. They just flat out out exectue people with the system and create mismatches. They all use the screen game as an extension of their run game.

Raceland run the Franklin Offense. And I have to say at first I was not crazy about it, but I have to come to like it.

I agree Ram, at first I did not like it at all but now with the last few years of them doing what imo is a much better job of mixing in the run I am not all as oppesed to it as I was.

A team HAS to be able to RUN the football effectively for any system to work.

I've heard it described (and appropriately so) as "multiple". Meaning multiple formations and mixing multiple systems, including west coast, spread, pro, etc.

Sounds about right.

Tony is the OC at Auburn now he doesn't come to your school anymore.

^ I know, Franklin came to Raceland's summer camp/practice for two or three consucutive years instucting on the "Franklin system", "Spread" or whatever one wants to call it.

I think that is where teams can really separate themselves and improve. Reps. Reps. Reps. Coaching on the run. Did Mumme create it. No, but he does a great job doing it. Franklin, like any successful coach, took what he liked and what he thought would work and made his own version of it.

It works most of the teams in kentucky are able to beat more talented teams on a regular basis, because of it, and several have even made the finals with it, and also have lost to far more superior teams. Just like teams with the wing-t, wishbone, and single wing, etc... good systems as this one are not anything new but if you buy in and do it right you will be a better team.

Did you read the whole sentence? I said ANYMORE.

Perhaps a corollary question is what team has won a state championship running Franklin's ,or whatever you want to call it, system?

Hoover High in Alabama won 5 titles and is probably the reason it has spread like wildfire to other schools. One year I think 3 of 6 champions in Bama ran it.

You have to mold the system to fit your personnel. In 2002 Duffer Duffy first implemented it at Henderson but almost never threw the ball. The starting QB was fast and athletic but couldn't hit the ground. I would guess they ran 90% of the time. Once Fidler was sophmore they threw more then run but still ran the ball a great deal.

Henry Clay, LCA, Raceland, South Laurel, Elizabethtown all run it. The list goes on and on.

In western Kentucky, I know of these ... Lone Oak, Marshall County, Caldwell County and Owensboro Catholic. Murray did last year, but that could change under a new coach. Daviess County runs something like it, but I don't know that they are a Franklin client. Mayfield has had some elements of the system in its offense since Franklin was an assistant there in the mid-90s. There is talk that Paducah Tilghman will go to it next season.

Where are you at YSTICK? I'm sure you could add some info to this subject. One thing is for sure, when and IF you commit to the system it will make your team better. :D

Jim Black put it in at Whitley County...

Not to bash, but I will take Cove's offense over anyone's in the nation. It has never ceased to amaze me, and we get him as an awesome teacher to boot.
Nothing against Coverdale, who from all accounts is an innovative offensive mind and a first-class guy, but it helps to have Trinity talent, too. His system wasn't quite as successful at Castle, for several reasons.

Like any good offensive scheme, it helps to have good players, too.
