I've never been to any of Tony's stuff. Mumme talks about a lot of it in one of the Coach of The Year Manuals. There's a lot of it on the net too. I wish I had the cash to go to Franklin's things. I think it would be worth the money to take a staff. The Chris Hatcher videos are great at explaining some of the actual plays.

I heard today that Greenup County will no longer be running the Tony Franklin system. Instead, the Musketeers will revert back to the Power/Option game used in 2005 and 2006 and possibly the triple option with Eric Craft at QB.

 

Why would Greenup County leave a system that gave them a District Championship and an average of 36 points per game over their final 6 games?

 

Heard last week, the boosters, said they would not fund the money for the camp this year. I guess they liked the crap we ran before last year, I cant wait to watch 3 runs up the middle and then punt. If they were short on $, heck I would have paid 4 it out of my pocket, It would have been better than paying $5 a game to watch us score 7 points every game. Sorry, didnt mean to vent, but this is stupid, plain old stupidity.:mad:

They had a nice athlete at QB. I got to catch a couple of games on T.V. I thought he did a great job adapting to his talent there this year.

I'd love to get our guys to the clinic. I feel like it would make a huge difference when everybody can see things first hand.

My understanding is that when you attend your first paid clinic u sign paperwork that says if you drop out of the yearly clinics, you will not run the offense. I dont know how well they can enforce that, But I hope not very well and GC will still run it.

No, scheduling wise we had to miss the Nashville clinic...killed me...first time in six years. We'll have to have him/them come to our place and get us caught up...That's going to be a hefty check!!:eek:

Not true...you sign a contract that says if you copy ANYTHING, aid in implementing the system with a program not under contract you will be sued. There are a couple of teams that are about to get the hammer dropped on them for that very thing...Tony's people are very loyal to him. Tony stayed the course, stuck with his beliefs and worked his way back to the top, doing it his way...and he's been good to his friends along the way.

That is not true. You cannot share the offense. You don't have to stop running what you already know.

Not as of last weekend.

I don't think that speed is very important in this offense. Like oldonetechnique said, of course speed will make it better. But, the formation is what helps you in any spread type offense. Most of the passes are position passes, and if completed, will give you five yards. So, speed is not as important as catches. Runs after the catch are a plus, but if you get five yards per play, you will put some points on the board.

 

Now, if you have a great back or two, you can adapt to some more runs, which will open up the pass. And the formation will prevent teams from stacking players in the box. If you have a fast QB, you can add more run/pass options or QB draws.

 

Really, the only thing that I do not like about the Franklin offense is, there is no lead blocker in the backfield. There have been many times, I wish when running the ball, that we would have had a lead blocker. But, you can change formations if you want, for certain sets.

 

I agree with you 100% Ram. But the Tony Franklin System is what it is. It is a "system" that is designed to spread the ball around to a variety of recievers in the short and intermediate passing game and then use the short passing game to open up the deeper routes for some big plays. The Tony Franklin Offense uses the screens to the backs and recievers as an alternate way to run the ball. Instead of running sweeps and options to get the ball out on the edge, they simply toss the ball to a reciever who is already outside. The big misconception with this offense is that the running game is automatically inaffective just because it is a passing oriented offense. I have seen this offense produce very balanced running statistics over the past several years. Many people think that you can just go and change the "system" and it will automatically work. Thats not the case, Coach Franklin and many other college coaches such as Texas Tech's Mike Leach have designed this offense and understand far better than any of us. If a team wants to run the Tony Franklin System then they need to run the Tony Franklin System. Dont try to half-way run it, or partially run it. It is a "system" for a reason, it all works well together and the plays have been carefully created to complement each other. I am a big fan of this offense because it allows smaler teams to match up with the bigger stronger teams. It also spreads the ball around to a variety of play makers and allows your QB to complete a high percentage of his passes and really take control of the offense. However, in order to run this offense you do have to have a QB who is able to read defensive coverages well and manage the game effectively. I think Greenup is really making a bad move by going away from the system. I know the first year didnt go so well but it takes time to develope into a Tony Franklin team. It took Raceland several years before they were effective in this offense but look where it took them in 2006 and even in 2002 when they won a district championship. My advice to G.C. is to stick with the Tony Franklin Offense and good things will happen. Craft is a solid QB, and Im sure he learned alot from last season. Greenup will never be able to match up with teams like Johnson Central, Rockcastle, Russell, ect. if they try to run it down there throat, IMO.

Excellent post. To add to what you said, it is not about the plays, its about the fundamentals and how the plays are executed. How well does the WR runs routes, how well does the offensive protects the QB and picks up pressure, among other things. Tony Franklin and his staff does a great job teaching the little things. From what I have seen, they give out DVDs containing drills, plays done by other teams running this system, and the clinic so you can watch it over and over. It is a system. It is not about the plays.
