Timeouts vs Old School Discpline

In your eyes, not mine, or my fathers or his fathers and quite frankly your way of thinking is what is wrong with America as a whole.

You believe what you will and I(and most this board) will believe what I do and as long as YOU do not raise a big stink about the way I discipline MY children everything will be ok.

You and your thinking are the reason prayer is not in school, The Ten Commandments are not in public view, and are schools are out of control because of lack of paddling.

Some final thoughts on this subject. I have stated that if you truly believe that hitting/spanking your child is a just and effective form of punishment continue to do so. I'm not raising a big stink. I'm not trying to tell you how to raise your children. I'm simply stating that I believe hitting children is wrong. As far as my way of thinking being what is wrong with America, I disagree. The conversation on this subject has been open, heated, and informative. If my opinions are that harmful to you and your way of life, go get the Secret Police to hunt me down and put an end to it. It seems that because I do actually think for myself, I have offended you. I'm sorry for that. I'll remember to spank myself for that next time it happens. Prayer is in public schools. I pray every morning for the wisdom and courage to help my students and players. I also pray for wisdom everytime I have to discipline my 7 year old autistic son (not once has God told me to hit him). As far as the Ten Commandments go, I agree with you they should be in public view. Finally, schools are not out of control because of lack of corporal punishment. Some schools are out of control because we as a society have lost our way. We have a lack of personal discipline and responsibility which saddens me greatly. Not only in our youth, but in our society as a whole. As Christmas nears I wish each of you a good one and hope that Santa brings you a bundle of switches. I'm sure you could put them to good use. And by the way, I apologize for insinuating that anyone was a coward if they spanked their kids. I don't know any of you well enough to say if you are cowards or not.

First I want to say I wish you the best with your autistic son and to remember that God gives you no more than you can handle. I have worked with autistic children so I know some of the challenges, but not to the degree of working and living with the challenge every second of everyday.

Second, I agree with what you posted in the bold 100% and I too wish you a good Christmas and the last bolded part made me laugh.........

Personally, I don't believe there is such a thing as "the proper method of discipline". Different punishments vary in effectiveness depending on the child involved. When I was disciplined as a child, it was almost always by spanking and I can tell you that method was VERY effective with me. Before I had children, I figured that spanking would be the primary form of punishment I would employ someday on my kids. However, in my particular case, I have found other forms of punishment to be more effective. I firmly believe that spanking is a proper form of discipline when applied properly. It's just that in my case, other forms work better. For my son, taking away video games/computer use/phone use seems to be most effective. For my daughter (who is an A type personality with a capital A), making her sit in her room alone for a period of time which varies depending on the violation, is quite effective.

I agree with the bolded part whole heartedly. My son needed nothing more than to take away his goodies to keep him in line. My daughter fought with Mrs. S all of the time, but she didn't want to disappoint Daddy, so a stern look from me would devastate her. It still does.

My nephew, who we had custody of, only responded to time outs, though. He was/is ADHD with violent tendancies. Spanking did no good. He didn't respect his toys so he didn't miss them when they were gone. The most effective punishment was to set him in front of an egg timer and make him watch his time out go by. 5 minutes is an eternity to a seven year old, especially if they have to watch it tick past. If he talked, we started over. If he got up, we started over. If he threw a temper tantrum, the time was extended and we started over. We'd sit at the kitchen table all night, in the beginning. He got to the point where he dreaded that egg timer so bad, that one minute would settle him right out. The threat of further time at the table kept him in line.

Oops, sorry! I came to the cookie cutter reference, got hungry, and went off to dig for Christmas cookies. :D;)

My older sister used to get worn out a lot becasue she was bad a lot. I got worn out some because I was bad or got away with things better. My younger sister has never been spanked at all and is 20 years old now. My parents were also older and much more laid back with her. You also learn from your experiences as a parent. We got whipped with dad's leather belt and the only time mom hurt me was with a switch from the willow tree next to our house.

It didn't have to happen a lot to put the fear into me. I can say that I hope my kids turn out as good as my younger sister has. We all got disciplined our own ways and they all seemed to work.

As a former teacher that has been paddled........ there are SO many kids that would be SO much better if you could paddle them. A lot of them know that there are no consequences that can be laid down on them. They have no fear because teachers are handcuffed so bad. That is a major problem in a lot of failing schools!

It takes a big man to hit a child. I never spank my children and they behave very well. Discipline does not mean yelling, screaming, and hitting. Discipline means setting boundaries and enforcing those boundaries. Most parents who resort to hitting their child are the same parents who are inconsistent with boundaries and consequences. The only time they discipline children is when it is convenient for them or if they are in public and the child's behavior becomes embarrassing. Personally, I do not believe there is ever an excuse for hitting a child. If you are a parent and find that you are spanking your child often, then you are the one that needs help.

I understand that there is a point when to stop spanking, but if you are at a point when you just haul off and hit or spank a child over the littlest things then the parent needs help.

If you tell a child specifically not to do something and they keep on doing it then it's time for punishment.

I agree! When I was a student the paddle was used when needed, and our school had a reputation as one of the most orderly schools in the area. Today the paddle is seldom used in the same school (the student and parents both have to agree, and sign a document to that effect).

As a student in the 1960s and early 1970s if a teacher threatened to take you to the office, that was usually all that was needed to correct misbehavior. We feared the office and the consequences. Today, if a teacher threatens to take a student to the office, many of them will laugh or grin all the way down the hall.

That goes back to parental responsibility again. As when I was a youngster, my kids DID NOT want to get in trouble at school. Their fear was not the teacher or principal. Their fear lied in the discipline that would be handed out once they got home and they knew that was far worse than anything the school would do.

Kids do not need best friends. They need parents.
