December 19, 200718 yr Growing up it was ol' school Discpline that I was raised with, now it's called abuse. These other forms of discpline llike timeouts, grounding, ADD, ADHD didn't exist back in my day, it was viewed back then as uncontrolable behavior and punishment by spanking was the rule, even in school. I think some of these crybaby persons have took the parenting from parents by coming up with things like these puny attempts to raise a child and to "Let them Express themselves" let kids be individuals is on thing but let them be destructive is another. What are your thoughts?
December 19, 200718 yr It takes a big man to hit a child. I never spank my children and they behave very well. Discipline does not mean yelling, screaming, and hitting. Discipline means setting boundaries and enforcing those boundaries. Most parents who resort to hitting their child are the same parents who are inconsistent with boundaries and consequences. The only time they discipline children is when it is convenient for them or if they are in public and the child's behavior becomes embarrassing. Personally, I do not believe there is ever an excuse for hitting a child. If you are a parent and find that you are spanking your child often, then you are the one that needs help.
December 19, 200718 yr All I know is that the reason I second guessed everything I did when I was younger is because I feared the consequences. My parents never laid a hand on me but I never wanted to find out if they would. I think the fear of not knowing if they'll spank you or not is worse than doing something and knowing you're going to get it. I doubt I'd fear a "timeout".

How old is your child? In my experience, spanked or timouts there are good kids and bad kids brought up in both but kids who are not disciplined with spankings are the more smart mouth, spoiled, pushing the limit type of children who run the house instead of the parents. Consequnces of acting up or out as an adult are jail time, fired from work, or being an outcast, timeouts do nothing to prepare a child for that.
December 19, 200718 yr I have a 7 year old son with autism and an 11 year old daughter. Neither of my children are perfect, but I do not have to hit them in order to discipline them. My children are neither spoiled, smart mouthed, or run my house. There are boundaries set and if they cross them there are consequences. I just don't hit my children then puff up my chest and claim to be a man of great discipline. I was spanked/beaten when I was a child, and it didn't do me one bit of good. I went back and made the same mistake over again. If those of you that were spanked as children take an honest look back, you will probably be in the same boat. I'm not on here advocating being easy on children. I am advocating the opposite. Be tough on your children. Hold them to high standards. Discipline them when they are wrong. I simply believe hitting your child is a cowardly and ineffective form of punishment.
December 19, 200718 yr I'm thankful that my kids are young adults, but I was very strict on them growing up. I rarely ever laid a hand on them, but it did happen. As the saying goes "parenting is the toughest job you'll ever love".

Spare the rod, spoil the child. My dad was a great, great man. When I needed a spanking, I got one. There was never a time that I received one, that I didn't deserve. There was never a time that I received one in public. If I misbehaved in public, all my dad had to do was give me that look, and I knew I was in trouble when I got home. My dad was very consistent with his discipline, and I certainly knew what my boundaries and limitations were. My parents raised all three of my siblings the same way, and I can assure you that the four of us are what we are today because of the love and discipline that our parents showed us, and I use the same discipline on my children when they need it. I extend you an open invitation to come visit the ER at the hospital where I work on any given weekend. I can take you room to room of young teenage boys and girls that are either brought in by the police, or their parents for some sort of behavior problem, and you can ask them if they were spanked as a child. You may be surprised at their answers. I know I never am.

December 19, 200718 yr Justify hitting your children however you want to. Reflect on the good ole days when Dad would smack you around to teach you a lesson, then do that to your children. The bottom line is this. Hitting your children is wrong. If you must resort to physical violence to discipline your children or teach them a valuable life lesson, then you have no control (self or otherwise)and probably never will. As far as all problem children not being spanked/beaten; go to any prison and survey the inmates on wether or not they were spanked/beaten as children. Maybe their answers will surprise you.
December 19, 200718 yr Like most, I was spanked on the bottom, scolded at times, lost privileges, grounded and had extra chores added, when I created a problem. The punishment would vary, with regards to the severity of the occurrence. I learned each time, that the disappointment on my Mother and Father's expression, hurt me much, much more, than any spanking or scolding. A lesson learned, is a lesson retained. At times, the "look" from either, would hurt greater, than any punishment they would offer.
December 19, 200718 yr Whenever I read a horrific story of a kid shooting up a school, the first thing that pops in to my mind is, that kid should've been spanked. To each his own... There's not one way to discipline a kid and not one person that can tell you that your way is right or wrong. I love reading publications on how to discipline my children written by some doctor who doesn't even have kids...

There's not one way to discipline a kid and not one person that can tell you that your way is right or wrong. I love reading publications on how to discipline my children written by some doctor who doesn't even have kids... I'm with you 'bro. We've all seen small children, crying in a store, checkout line or in public. Some parents will ignore, some will point their finger, some will verbally scold and some will spank. Various methods and it's what the family gets accustomed to, in their discipline approach. As children get older, hopefully they require less discipline and learn their own morals, values and means. For those that continue or escalate, the parents much decide on the various options to use.

As far as all problem children not being spanked/beaten; go to any prison and survey the inmates on wether or not they were spanked/beaten as children. Maybe their answers will surprise you. Well I've refrained until now. So where to start. First, I am very sorry that you were abused when you were younger, truly I am. However, I don't know a soul who "smacks their children around" as a form of discipline. There is a difference you know. I don't think I ever had a whelp, bruise, knot or otherwise when I was disciplined by my father. Frankly, there were less than a handful of incidents where I received that type of punishment growing up, because those were the boundaries I didn't want to cross, just as you have established boundaries for your children. I'm not in prison, haven't raped and ravaged, held up liquor stores and the like and frankly, a survey that would have included my answer would follow the line that I knew that my actions resulted in consequences. My children are 9 and 14 and I seldom have to raise my hand to them. When they were younger I did. They understand that there are boundaries and they seldom cross them, but in the event that they do, they realize there will be physical consequences, and not me wailing on them, ripping my shirt off, beating my chest and screaming from the porch that this is my house and I'm the king of it. Frankly, I suppose we will agree to disagree, but I take offense at your insinuation that spanking is "cowardly". Simply not true.
December 19, 200718 yr Spare the rod, spoil the child. . Scripturally, that is not the way it is written. It reads... Proverbs 13:24 (New International Version) 24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. Emphasis mine. Enough evidence for me.
