Timeouts vs Old School Discpline

Featured Replies

I don't spank my kids. I don't put them in 'timeout' either. First off....spankings don't accomplish anything. Eventually kids will either become numb to the physical punishment or will come to the conclusion that whatever mischeif they are wanting to getting mixed up in will far outweigh the few minutes of pain they will endure from a good spanking. It makes sense.....if you want to do something bad enough.....having your backside sting for 10 minutes isn't enough of a deterrent. I also don't make my kid 'sit in the corner and think about what they have done'. What I have found that works is speaking firmly and sternly to my kid and trying to reason with them. It usually turns into a lecture and a kid hates nothing more that have to sit there and have to listen to an adult lecture them. Also, don't think that my talks with my kids are a one sided deal.....they must participate in the discussion and make eye contact with me and my wife when we are talking with them. I don't yell and scream, nor do I call them names, but I do make them take a good hard look at their actions and what affects their behavior and actions have on the situation. You would be amazed at how quick my kids rebound from having a poor attitude or misbehaving to acting like respectful young adults.

I know kids are kids, but they don't like to be treated or talked to like they are babies or like they are stupid. They also don't respond too well to physical punishment, either.

This attitude of parenting IMO is one of the biggest problems with disciplining children today. When they have misbehaved it is irrelevant what they "like".... or what we (the parents) like... What is important is that we teach the lesson, and that we teach the lesson in a spirit of love. We have to love the child enough to actually correct them. Sometimes a spanking is appropriate, most times other techniques are sufficient, but parents need to do whatever is required to teach the lesson. Anything less than that is a dis-service to the kid.

There is much difference between spanking and hitting.

You hit in the head area, that is wrong.

You hit in anger, that is wrong.

You hit in the chest, that is wrong.

You give a firm swat with an open hand on the buttock, it is not and is not hitting.

Using the same mindset, time out where you force a child into isolation where they are separated out from their family and friends and must remain silent could be seen as a horrible punishment.

LBBC "hits" it here if a parent hits a child anywhere but the behind then that's abuse.

We were spanked as kids and we all turned out ok.

I thought I would be a parent who spanks, but it never felt like the right thing to do. I have never spanked any of my 3 children and, so far they have turned out ok also.

I have never regretted how I discipline my children, but I certainly wouldnt judge a parent who does spank. A swat on the bottom never hurt anyone.

I see so many kids today go to a psychiatrist and come into my store with scripts for Adderal,Ritalin and Concerta for attention deficit disorder....the only attention deficit 95% of them have is the attention that they are getting from their parents. Zero!!

My dad told me time and time again..."I'l give you enough rope to hang yourself...whether you swing or not is up to you."

I was taught from an early age that what happened to me was a result of my actions..good or bad...nobody was responsible but me!

Did I get spanked...on occasion...but I can tell you this...I would have been more than GLAD to have my Dad spank me than to have him sit me down at the kitchen table and have to look at the disappoinment in his eyes when I messed up...

And I'll guarantee you that my kids will tell you the same thing.

Adderall,Ritalin,Concerta...in all but about 5% of the cases....Crutches for poor parenting!!

I had a few slams dished my way over the years and from that Ive learned one undisputable fact:

Dont screw with dad.

The bolded part was almost the same with my mom. I had rather her just go ahead and spank me as to talk me to death, or explain what she would do the next time I messed up...."I'll cut a switch and wear the hide off you!", or "I take a belt and whip you 'till you cry and then whip you for crying!"

If she did spank us though, it was never as bad as her descriptions. She was a good mom, and fair. She usually just had to give us a certain look or point her finger, and that took care of everything. It wasn't a fear oriented thing,.... respect for her leadership and direction was more like it. BTW, dad left most of the disciplining up to mom. I think I got one spanking from him.

Truer words if ever spoken, there was no ADD or ADHD back when I was growing up, back then mom and dad would straighten us out when they thought we needed it, maybe that's why I don't drink or smoke, mainly because I made a choice back then and I stook to it today. I never was in trouble with the law(maybe a traffic ticket), but nothing like what's going on out there nowadays.

I couldn't agree more. In my profession I work with mostly children with ADD and ADHD and the parents are trying to find the right dose to keep their kids behavior in check which in turn makes them barely functional. I have used the same number myself 95% of all medication given is for the parents benefit not the childs. I was spanked when I needed one and talked to when I needed that and I would like to think that I am semi-normal. I do the same with my kids and they too seem to be normal with no emotional issues. When I went to school the paddle was used and there was a lot less bad behavior. Now if there is a problem it is the schools fault (teacher, principal) never the child. Parents want to make excuses but discipline starts at home the school should be a place for learning.

It takes a big man to hit a child. I never spank my children and they behave very well. Discipline does not mean yelling, screaming, and hitting. Discipline means setting boundaries and enforcing those boundaries. Most parents who resort to hitting their child are the same parents who are inconsistent with boundaries and consequences. The only time they discipline children is when it is convenient for them or if they are in public and the child's behavior becomes embarrassing. Personally, I do not believe there is ever an excuse for hitting a child. If you are a parent and find that you are spanking your child often, then you are the one that needs help.

Could you notify my parents of this...

I got spanked quite a bit. Yet at the sametime I know violence is not the answer. I must be a curve breaker. I'll spank my children if they do wrong.
