Timeouts vs Old School Discpline

Justify hitting your children however you want to. Reflect on the good ole days when Dad would smack you around to teach you a lesson, then do that to your children. The bottom line is this. Hitting your children is wrong. If you must resort to physical violence to discipline your children or teach them a valuable life lesson, then you have no control (self or otherwise)and probably never will. As far as all problem children not being spanked/beaten; go to any prison and survey the inmates on wether or not they were spanked/beaten as children. Maybe their answers will surprise you.

Capt. you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but to say that because me or anyone else that laid a hand on our children has no control (self or otherwise) and probably never will is just wrong. You have no right to judge me or anyone else on how we handle our children.

With all due respect, spanking as a useful and proper discipline is a far cry from smacking your children around and feeling good about it. I'm sure there are those who employ the latter, and they deserve any criticism they get.

But there are also those who love their kids, and are firm and strong role models for them, but who use spanking as a discipline and it is not child abuse or self-serving. I have never spanked my children that I walked away from it feeling like a "big man". And I have never smacked around one of my kids or anyone else. You can think what you will, I'm not going to try an change your mind, but I am not out of control or weak as a parent because I spank my kids.

I think it really depends on the person, and the extent of being punished. I myself got a paddle to the bottom when I was young, though I think half the time it wasn't necessary. I know guys that have serious violence issues, and they stemmed from abusive parents. I know girls with really low self-esteem and self-abuse problems, again, stemming from abusive parents. Then there are my brothers and I who are fine, and I know of other people who are fine even having been spanked or whatever. So if you choose to discipline your kids through violence, be very careful about it.

There's a difference in spanking and "violence".

It takes a big man to hit a child. I never spank my children and they behave very well. Discipline does not mean yelling, screaming, and hitting. Discipline means setting boundaries and enforcing those boundaries. Most parents who resort to hitting their child are the same parents who are inconsistent with boundaries and consequences. The only time they discipline children is when it is convenient for them or if they are in public and the child's behavior becomes embarrassing. Personally, I do not believe there is ever an excuse for hitting a child. If you are a parent and find that you are spanking your child often, then you are the one that needs help.

I think I will go with my King James Bible on this on, "Spare the rod, hate the child."

I stand firmly by every word I have said. I was not abused as a child. I was spanked on the buttocks with a leather belt. It did absolutely nothing to deter me from misbehavior. I learned much more from my parents by watching them sacrifice for me and my siblings than I ever did at the end of a belt or hand. I'm not being judgemental. I'm simply stating that a man should not hit his children. If you truly believe that you are right and just in disciplining your children this way continue to do so. I simply challenge you to take a long hard look at what you are doing. Is it really in the best interest of your child or is there another way to discipline? Sometimes people take the easy way out. It doesn't take much self control to jerk a kid up and wear them out. It does however take patience and self control to take a little extra time to ensure your actions do not damage your child.

You are being judgemental. You stated that parents that lay a hand on their child have no self control and probably never will. You don't consider that judgemental? Because you were spanked and it did nothing to deter you from continued mischief, just tells me that you were rebellious at the time. When I got my butt whooped, I knew not to do what I had done again. You can call it abuse if you so choose, I call it a lessen learned the hard way.

I'd argue that there are more children who are not disciplined whatsoever. Not spanking, not alternatives as you use. I would guess that there are far more derilects who had no discipline than those who are raging against the machine due to all of those "beatings".

I have seen the results of the other forms of discipline all to often. There is the rare child that has not been under corporal punishment that does well, however, discipline is usually notably different in school between students whose households apply the method, and those that don't.

Justify it however you choose. It is still wrong.

You still haven't explained Why it is wrong.

There you go being judgemental again.

If you cannot see where a grown adult hitting a defenseless child is wrong, then nothing I can say will be able to explain it. Furthermore, if my judgement of your discipline techniques infuriates you so much, then maybe I have struck a chord with you.

There is much difference between spanking and hitting.

You hit in the head area, that is wrong.

You hit in anger, that is wrong.

You hit in the chest, that is wrong.

You give a firm swat with an open hand on the buttock, it is not and is not hitting.

Using the same mindset, time out where you force a child into isolation where they are separated out from their family and friends and must remain silent could be seen as a horrible punishment.

You have struck no chord with me. I find it amusing that you claim that you have turned out fine, you were disciplined with the belt, yet the belt had no affect on your discipline and makeup. It seems very unlikely. Spend some time in a public school. The paddle Definately needs to be brought back there as well.
