1969 - Trinity 20 Highlands 7 ( Very good Trinity team - I believe AAA champs)

2000 - Highlands 42 Trinity 29 ( Very good HHS team - Eventual AAA state champs)

 

Margin of victory 13 points both times.

X was the AAA champion in 1969. Trinity's first was in 1968. Next was 1972.

The only real common denominator in all 3 is Lex Cath (Trinity in a scrim and St X and Highlands in reg season). If I had to put these teams in order you would have to have X and T in a dead tie with Highlands barely coming in 3rd. Even though Highlands went undefeated I still dont believe they could beat a X or T team.

3. Highlands (not by much at all though)

 

 

I don't believe in this approach, but if you going to go with it, didn't T struggle with BG and then beat X. Highlands didn't struggle with BG. I think its fair to say they dominated BG from start to finish of the game, and it wasn't because BG shot themselves in the foot or played a poor game. Highlands was just a much better team. Using your logic, but applying it to BG, I think an argument could be made that Highlands is the best.

 

Who really knows which team is the best this year. I do know that in a lot of years, the depth of X and T would enable them to beat Highlands. I have no problem admitting that as those two teams match our committment but have over 1200 boys compared to our 400 or so. But I don't think depth would have been a problem for us this year however. This was the deepest Highlands team (particularly on defense and at the running back positions) that I have ever seen at Highlands.

 

I will say that I found Dale's scheduling the past two years to be a little odd. Last year when we counted on a lot of juniors (and as good as the juniors were, they are still a year behind physically to seniors) to start and didn't have near the depth that we do this year, we play Elder, Louisville X and DeSales. This year when we start predominantly seniors whom got a ton of experience starting last year and have a lot more depth, we don't play any of the big boys. Odd. And I'm not second guessing Dale, as I'm one of his biggest supporters (to the point that some people have questioned at times whether Leatherneck is Dale:D). Only way I can rationalize it is Highlands like a lot of other strong programs in the state does have a difficult time putting a schedule together. I do know for a fact that if the Herbie had fallen through this year, we were going to be playing Colerain, so I guess Dale tried and with all the preseason hype, who could have known that Trotwood would have turned out to not be the super strong team that everyone thought it was going to be.

Although I miss the excitement of recent years where the playoffs in the old 3A class were decided between Highlands, Cov Cath or Lex Cath, the one good thing I see with the current classification is that with Lex Cath in 4A and Highlands and Cov Cath in 5A that the regular season will hopefully see these teams play each other year after year. It was great to see Highlands and Lex Cath play in the regular season this year, and LC tried to schedule Cov Cath at one point for the first game of the season, but there was a scheduling conflict for Cov Cath. Maybe Coaches Mueller and Letton will keep the Highlands / LC game on the books and LC can bring Cov Cath into the mix, too.

They have, to a person, told me that Highlands was better (some say much better, two tds better) than X. And given the rivalry between the programs, I think the comments were made somewhat begrudgingly. Heck, I don't know if its true that we were better and we'll never know for certain, but it was and is sure nice to hear.

A little off thread here, but Deuce has really impressed me as he just gets better and better. Not to offend anyone but I think there was quite a drop-off from him to X's next best back (same situation at Trinity). I don't pretend to know all of this season's juniors, but the Deuce IMO has to be among the top 2 or 3 candidates for Mr. Football next year. X has to be a different team without him playing.

That's a very fair point about Deuce being out. I'm sure that would have made a difference in the game with CovCath. Again, I find these "we could have beat you" debates sort of silly. Comparing good teams that don't play one another is impossible. Yet I understand the desire to do so. X and T fans point out certain things in support of their claims and the Highlands supporters in rebuttal point out things like comments from Coach Wallace that T's O was better than Highlands, yet Highlands D was better than Trinity's and Highlands folks then, to support Coach Wallace's comments, point out that BG scored a lot more points against T than they did against Highlands. About all I can conclude from reading the comments and looking at game results is that Highlands, X and T were each very, very good teams. If they'd have played, I think they would have been close games, with no clear cut favorites. Certainly no blowouts. Can I have a kumbaya?:thumb:
