Central 27 Belfry 17

Exactly....I kept hearing on this forum how Belfry was going to be more physical and harder hitting(somebody suggested Central might just crawl into a "fetal position") and I was like wow....I gotta go see the Pirates because if that's true they must have a team full of studs. So I went and saw. Not to take anything away from Belfry, but no question Central was the harder hitting team. Belfry had their chances, the first half INT with a few seconds left for a TD return was a colossal mistake IMO. You gotta take a knee or run the ball and go in with a lead. Then, the fumble in the red zone in the second half was huge. Congrats to both teams on an outstanding season.

I don't really think they were the harder hitting team. They just had more speed. May had some big gains up the middle, but Belfry killed themselves with penalties. The thing that impresses me most about Central is their speed. They were a well-rounded team that is big, strong and fast. But I think their speed was the difference maker Friday.

Congratulations, Central!

Of course, superior team strength & speed will most often determine the winner between two well-coached & executing teams. However, at this point in the season even those teams, especially when playing short-handed due to injuries, and unfortunate enough to expect little in the way of bench support, can still overcome those obstacles, given equal opportunities, and a winning attitude. ;) Apparently, miscues determined the outcome of this game.

Congrats to both teams on successful seasons. :thumb:

The penalty most is questioning is a penalty if a team does their set procedure consistently then on a fourth down they do something really quick and different. That is an intent to do one thing, draw someone over and they did. However, that is a rule and you cannot do it. The offials did get this right. Not sure about the PI calls. The WH tend to be nervous but that is typical at this time of year. One time the time came when the WH did not start the clock after an injury and was reminded to do so by a wing official. That happens..... NERVES......

As a Highlands fan, the first thing I notice when I got to Central Stadium was they had an 8 lane track. Hello, that means they are serious about track and they have fast kids.

Maybe someone from Belfry should have taken a road trip and looked around the stadium. It would have told them a little something.

I never understood the logic of that penalty. Of course it proabably is with the intent to draw someone off sides, yet I can't see how a ref can read the mind of the coach and know for certain that is the coach's intent. When a team lines up under center on 4th and short and calls out the snap count trying to draw the other team off sides, its done with the same intent, yet its not a penalty which makes zero sense. If you are going to keep such a silly rule, it seems to me that there needs to be a reciprocal penalty for the defense along the lines of: if you haven't blitzed or stunted all game and then you blitz/stunt, it should be a penalty as the D has the intent to get through the line before the O has the time to react after the snap count.

No... the corollary is the rule that disallows the defense from yelling "hut" during the snap count (to draw a "false start"). And it most certainly IS in place.

I agree with you though. High school football should eliminate "drawing the defense offsides" as being part of the game. IMO, football would be better without it. Few things are as frustrating as seeing your team's defense stop the opposition just to see the offense steal it back on 4th and

Belfry is notorious for what I call "the coordinated stance change" of the offensive line. They get low in a 2 pt. stance, then all stand together and go down to a 3 pt. stance during a long snap count.

As it is, drawing the defense is perfectly legal, but it takes away from a primary object of the game - playing solid defense.

Apparently not, because this was the penalty in question. With Belfry in punt formation deep in their own territory, and Central gaining alot of pressure, the Pirates went into their quick set formation and about 4 Central players blatantly jumped offsides. You have seen the set before for many years and not once has it been penalized. In this case, Belfry must have found the first officiating crew in 15 years who knew how to make the proper call.

The Dallas Cowboys used to use a similar set where they would quickly jump into the set formation and hold it during a hard snap count. I am a fervent believer that your defense should be disciplined enough to watch the football, and that ahrd coutns and plays liek this should be legal, but oh well.

That particular penalty ended up not being as big as people though it would be... Belfry intercepted Banks a few plays later, and then, well, I don't want to think about what happened next.

Here is a question I have, and to all Central fans Im not trying to take anything away from your guys victory you deserved it, they were bad calls yeah, but you guys earned the victory.

But what do you think about splitting ref crews up to do games with different people? I think that would add to he nerves, because when I work with a co-worker for so long we become a team and cohesive in the way we do things, and I would imagine that would be the same for a ref crew, it def. would take me a little out of my comfort zone, which isn't good considering Id already be shaking from the game haha.

Yeah I knew coming in their speed was the biggest factor against us. It makes it harder to runt hat outside option with that speed, however the tight option was working well. What suprises me is with their speed their pass coverage is their week point.

Doesn't Ironton go into thier 3point stance like that every play and some times come off the ball in up position?

I agree eliminate it.:thumb:

Congrats LC on thier State Championship win .

This happens every game. 4th down with 5 and under and you can bet the O is going to try and draw the D offsides. This goes for the KHSAA, NCAA and NFL.

Somebody is this thread has suggested drawing the defensive offisde be removed from the game......what?

Long snap counts, changes in the cadence, sending players in motion....all this is nothing new....what is new....an official wanting to be part of the game.

By the way this coming form a Belfry fan, we can gripe about calls and yeah it was a poorly officiated game, a lot not called both ways that should have been.

But I just everybody to know that I am not trying in any way to inidcate that officiating costed Belfry a game, what costed Belfry a game was mistake after mistake, and I give Central credit because they forced some of those mistakes. A lot of off-sides was not called this game, Belfry backs were in motion a lot, and Central lined up alomost farther back that the O-line sometimes, I mean I seen some plays were they were back there bfore the QB, so a lot of missed calls all around, BOTH sides, but I would never take anything away from Central, you guys deserve this title, but we will be back!

Congrats to Central, as expected they were big and fast. The defensive line was incredible and we had no match for their speed. We could hope to contain them and gang tackle, but they had a couple of guys that if they broke a tackle, we knew we had no one who could run them down. And they broke a couple of tackles. Central was able to do exactly what they needed to do to win it, control the LOS, limit us to 2nd and 3rd and long, and force us to throw more than we'd like.

Pirate fans, and many other fans grossly underestimated this Central team and it didn't take long to realize it.

I'm proud of this Belfry team, they played their hearts out all season and in the end, they just came up short against a team with more talent. The coaches did a good job and with 4 minutes to go we were in position to win the game, driving the ball inside the red zone. It didn't go our way, but it shows a lot of fortitude that you guys battled back and had that chance to win it. Good luck to those seniors and hopefully the rest of the team will get to work and prepare for next year.

The telling stats to me were that we punted 7 times and threw the ball 12 times. If you'd told me that going in we would have to do that, then I'd say we were in trouble.

And then the two turnovers. Not normally a bad thing to win the turnover battle, but both the turnovers Belfry had were absolute KILLERS. Can't second guess the pass at the end of the half because EVERYONE in the stadium expected them to take a knee. We knew that Central would get the ball to start the 2nd half. It was a great call, but just a bad pass and it landed in the hands of the one guy who you didn't want to catch it. Elkins had been throwing beautiful passes and if he hits one big one there, we go in at the half up 17-7. But one of those things that sometimes happen, happened, and we went in down 14-10. Huge momentum swing there and it set the tone for the rest of the game.

I know that it sounded like both teams had their share of turnovers. Alot of Belfry fans are saying that turnovers killed their chances, but didn't Central have more turnovers than Belfry? Does anyone have the official stats that maybe could shed some light on this?
