Does anybody from Belfry honestly even think Somerset can score on the Mighty Belfry D? I know most of you in your predictions have said SHS will score around 16 points, but in reading your post it seems as if you just put those score predictions up to be nice and you really feel that Belfry will completely shut Somerset down (at least until you put your JV in).

I am just expecting both teams with the talent and the coaching that each possesses to play the best game they have all year. If both teams do so, I feel like anything could happen in this one.

Taking nothing away from the Briar Jumpers but I do believe they allowed Corbin to put up 56 points on them at the Briar Patch.

 

Belfry, in the first week of the season beat Corbin 21 - 0.

 

The Belfry Defense that showed up against the Redhounds has greatly improved since that first game and I'm sure they be ready come kickoff tomorrow night to show Somerset just how good they really are.

 

Then again I may be wrong and I'll be the first to admit it come Friday night after the game or Saturday morning.

They represent the unfamiliar and no matter how much you watch a team on film and try and prepare, you never know how your defense will be handle them until they take the field.

 

Somerset has scored plenty of points on good teams. In two of their losses (vs. Pulaski Co and Corbin) the Briar Jumpers scored a total of 96 points. :eek: That is unreal. and it should be noted that nobody else even came close to scoring that much on Pulaski or Corbin (including the Pirates).

Of course the flip side of that stat is that in those two losses, Somerset's defense gave up a total of 118 points.

 

And Belfry's starting defense has only given up a total 45 points on the season.

I know what you are talking about. Just when you think you are rolling smooth through the competition. Opps you see something you don't know what to do with. Then it's the fourth quarter and you don't have enough time to make that come back. Belfry could loose this game. Then we could all get rides on the space shuttle.

I don't think Corbin will put up 40, but I also would be SHOCKED if Belfry holds the Jumpers to less than 3 TD's.

 

I personally see Somerset scoring in the 20-30 point range, I just think they posess too many matchup problems and will show Belfry looks they haven't seen since Newport Central Catholic in the first game of last season. The fact somerset is playing at home as a definitive underdog further cements my beliefs.

 

BUT, I do think that Belfry's pass defense is substantially better than the 2003 and 2004 State Championship teams who faced VERY GOOD passing offenses against O'Cath and E'town. E'town scored in the low 30's that game and IMO Somerset's offense is not as good as that E'town team scattered with D-1 players.

So now... considering I will be leaving straight from work tomorrow, it is PREDICTION TIME!

I think you guys will score several TD's against Belfry. I also think you will see their starting D the entire game. I don't think you will win although. If you do beat Belfry, Russell or Breathitt should be no problem. I do believe at this time Belfry is the best team in 3-A. Now that could change.

KEYS TO VICTORY (Road Trip Edition):

 

BELFRY

 

- Don't Change The Station: The Pirates offensively matchup very well against Somerset. The Pirates will be bigger, stronger, and unlike any team Somerset has faced all season. It is usually a custom for me to point out how Belfry has to mix it up a bit more to win, in this game it is about running the plays you run best and executing them to perfection that will allow success. Belfry's best defense is to control the clock and wear down the Somerset players who go both ways, especially the linemen.

 

- "Go 70 in a 55": Defensively Belfry needs to know one speed, FAST! Hickman, Coleman, Webb, Bowens, and Lee will ultimately decide how this game is played. They have got to play aggressive football and constantly create pressure when the QB sets up to pass, if Somerset gets time to throw John Cole will destroy Belfry. But above all else, Belfry has got to use their quickness to keep Hughes from ever taking shape. Hughes is not a real fast back, but he runs hards and runs smart. This means Belfry can't miss tackles. If Somerset becomes a one dimensional team this game is over.

 

- "Lay Off The Breaks": This pertains to Belfry's special teams play. When it comes to kick coverage Belfry has got to be the agressor, instead of tying up on blocks and waiting for the returner to run into them. Cole is one of Kentucky's all-time leaders in kick returns for a reason. This slogan also applies to Belfry's return team. The Pirates have been much, much more effective than year's past, but it comes from the returners taking the approach of maing the play. This will be a game where momentum and field position could be huge, gaining 10+ yards extra per return could really help Belfry's cause.

 

"Keep Your Eyes On The Road"- If Belfry gets burnt deep, it will be a looooong night. Simple as that, keeping everything in front of them is critical.

 

 

SOMERSET

- "Going From Zero to 60 in No Time At All"- I cannot stress enough how important it will be for Somerset to jump on Belfry early. Belfry has not trailed in a football game since last year at this time. If somerset can score early and keep this game close early they vastly improve their chances of winning in the end. If Belfry can set their pace and march down the field, it will be a long night fro the Jumpers, a long exhausting night come the 4th Quarter. Somerset has to take the mantality of going for the throat early, playign conservative and trying to feel out Belfry will be the end of the Jumpers.

 

- "NO Exits In Sight"- In other words, consistency will be the name of the game for Somerset. Once they get the lead in this game, it is important to not always go fro the home run. Belfry just is simply too talented and has too many playmakers, and the odds would not be in Somerset's favor. It is important for Somerset to efficiently move the ball 10-15 yards a pop. Keep on a constant, steady pace that will utlimately make Belfry try to speed up everything they do on offense as well. If Belfry hurries the things they do, they become much more prone to turnovers and mistakes that could easily let Somerset back in this game.

 

- Act Like This Is Your Own Street": Lots of times homefield advantage is vastly overrated, but come Rounds 3 and on of the playoff homefield advantage is HUGE is it is utilized properly. If Somerset's fans can stay behind their team all game it will give them a bout fo confidence that they can play with a Belfry team that all they have heard about all season is "GREAT". As I said earlier, momentum in this game is the key to victory for either team, it is much more easy to egenrate momentum on the homefield. Plus, a 3+ hour ride on the schoolbus for Belfry certainly won't help their chances.

 

- "John C Needs To Be Behind The Wheel"- Not John Cole, but John Coomer. Somerset has an excellent #2 option at SE who also puts up All-State numbers. Belfry will no doubt always have an eye and their best cover guy on Cole, so the posession receiver Coomer must step up and help this team out. If Somerset gets two receiving threats on track, it will pose even more problems for Belfry.

BOTTOM LINE:

As Watusi mentioned, this is a team that can/will cause Belfry some issues. If Belfry doesn't have the services of Elkins at CB, then they become especially vulnerable. Belfry's physicality and depth give them a decisive advantage, but if breaks go Somerset's way and they can generate moentum late in a close game, this could be the end of the road for a very good Pirate team.

 

I personally see this palying out similar to the Middlesboro game last season. It goes back and forth for a while, then Belfry wins the battle up front and starts to pin their ears back a little more in pressuring the QB. This game is critical for Belfry to prepare for the road ahead of them, but if they don't take workman's like appraoch, the road ends here. Bottom line, if Preston, Young, Hickman, and Coleman can play solid games, Belfry takes this one pullig away late:

Honestly I see you guys scoring about 20 points. Maybe more, but that is my guess.

I really think in order for you guys to win it will take a solid defense of performance. I mean I know Somerset offense is great but this Belfry defense is really good, they are one of those teams taht are better than they look on film and paper, they are a sound defense.

After watching us (Corbin) play @ the Briar Patch, and watching us play Belfry, I want to offer my opinion on this, take it for what it is worth. I'm not trying to get you down, but I don't know if Somerset can score on Belfrys starting D. They can get pressure on your QB and never blitz a backer. The LB's are big AND fast and cover well. Also, unless the Jumpers find a way to stop the run, they won't have many opportunties on offense. Misdirection doesn't work (they are too disiplined) and you can't run over them. They have no weaknesses.

 

What you are about witness friday night is a real live football powerhouse. It will be Somersets biggest win in 20 years if they pull this off.
