Daniel Day Lewis was great as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York and also in Last of the Mohicans.

You liked him in 'Romeo + Juliet'???

Yes, now let's see your top 5.

1. Laurence Olivier

2. James Stewart

3. Humphrey Bogart

4. Sidney Portier

5. Spencer Tracey

1. Tom Hanks

2. Morgan Freeman

3. Robert Duvall

4. John Wayne

5. Dustin Hoffman

Robert DeNiro is a fine actor but he's had a bad habit of accepting ANY role offered to him the last 15 years or so. He can't make this list with movies like: Analyze That, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, The Fan and Angel Heart.

Jack Nicholson gets disqualified for Wolf and Man Trouble.

James Earl Jones would just as soon forget Alan Quartermain and the Lost City of Gold, Soul Man, The Meteor Man and The Best of the Best.

Al Pacino is out because of Gigli, Two for the Money, Simone, The Devil's Advocate and Dick Tracy.

Robin Williams has been very bad several times: Bicentennial Man, Flubber, Death to Smoochy (he was even nominated for a Razzie for Smoochy and Bicentennial), and Jumanji.

All of the above actors have had great performances and certainly are great a lot of the time. But in the case of Pacino, Nicholson and Williams they are prone to overacting while Jones and DeNiro seem to be willing to act in anything to cash a check.

Honestly, how can say any of these guys are out? A movie can be so so or bad and you can still have an actor or actors that put forward a good performance. To pick on the above guys, well all I can say is really bad judgment on your part IMO.

It all depends, the thread title is about never giving a bad performance but it seems to have evolved into actors who lift a movie by their presence. I'll agree that these are 5 of our finest actors. However, as for my judgement on these guys never having given a bad performance (which is why I picked on them) 4 out of the 5 were either nominated for or won a Razzie Award for Worst Actor or Worst Supporting Actor. You have to give either a really lackadasical performance or overact really badly to get one of those. I haven't listed a top 5 because if those 5 actors have all had at least one bad performance then I don't know of anyone that COULD make this list.

Michael Keaton

Kevin Costner

Dennis Hopper

Christopher Walken

Denzel Washington

Jeff Daniels

Jimmy Stewart

Henry Fonda

Tyrone Power

Peter Sellers

Sir Alec Guinness

Has anyone ever hear of Yul Brenner? In my opinion the greatest actor of all time. Oh yeah.. and that Val Kilmer....a close #2.

Robert DeNiro

I guess you missed "Meet the Fokkers." Good lord, was that a putrid movie.

Christopher Walken

Frankenstein never scared me.
