October 25, 200718 yr Just to refresh everyone's (well, not everyone) memory, here is the opening post in this thread: Of course this is subjective. These are my picks for actors who lift a movie to watchable just because they are in it. Feel free to add more.
October 25, 200718 yr Robert DeNiro Jack Nicholson James Earl Jones Al Pacino Robin Williams I thought that Pacino mailed in his performance in "Heat".
October 25, 200718 yr Al Pacino Morgan Freeman Robert Deniro Ed Harris Jack Lemon Ed Norton Jack Nicholson
October 25, 200718 yr Denzel in Training Day, John Q, Remember The Titans & soon to be American Gangster. Love to see Denzel as the bad guy.
October 25, 200718 yr Al Pacino Tom Hanks Robert Duvall Robert DeNiro Edward Norton Joaquin Phoenix- some probably don't agree, but he's one of my favorite actors.
October 25, 200718 yr I like everything he's in. I think he's a good actor. He's getting paid around $20 million per movie these days, so apparently someone else thinks he's a good actor too. Thats why Im not in the business, I guess!
October 25, 200718 yr Maybe I missed it, but I can't believe Paul Newman's name has yet to be mentioned. I don't think I've ever seen him in a bad movie.
October 25, 200718 yr John Cazale's a great lesser known actor... He lived a short life, but he was in some AMAZING movies, and he did an amazing job in the limited time that he had.
October 25, 200718 yr :thumb::thumb: Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors. American History X is great. Ed Norton is the man. Best actor on the planet, IMO.
October 25, 200718 yr I'll add these guys to my list as well: Phillip Seymour Hoffman (an extremely underrated actor) Denzel Val Kilmer Paul Giamatti Robert Downey Jr. Daniel Craig Another very good choice...:thumb:
October 25, 200718 yr Maybe I missed it, but I can't believe Paul Newman's name has yet to be mentioned. I don't think I've ever seen him in a bad movie. :thumb: Robert Redford...I always think of those two in pairs because The Sting is one of my all time favorite movies, but I really haven't seen enough of Redfords movies to say whether he's never given a bad performance. My guess is that almost every actor has given a bad one at some point.
October 25, 200718 yr True, but the thread title was 5 Actors Who Have Never Given a Bad Performance. I didn't say that any of the actors that you mentioned were bad actors. In the right roles they are some of the best of the last 30-40 years. However, Williams and Pacino are notorious for overacting when they try to carry a poor script. Even if you narrowed it down to one bad performance apiece it is pretty hard to defend: DeNiro in Showtime (Won a Razzie Award), Williams in Death to Smoochy and Bicentennial Man (Nominated for a Razzie in both), Nicholson in Man Trouble (Nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Actor), Pacino in Gigli and Revolution (Nominated for a Razzie Award for each), Jones is the only one that hasn't been nominated or won a Razzie Award but did you see Meteor Man or Soul Man? I like all 5 actors but to say that they have NEVER given a bad performace simply isn't true. Al Pacino was terrible in Two For The Money...it seems that he plays the same role over and over these days. Whatever the criteria of this thread, that movie DQ's him...it was a bad performance and it certainly didn't make the movie watchable...it made me wonder how a movie with Pacino and MM could be THAT bad. I pretty much agree with your breakdown. Off the top of my head, I'll try to think of 5 actors who I've yet to see drop a dud on the screen...which doesn't mean they haven't. It just means I haven't seen the movie, or I don't think it was bad. Edward Norton Philip Seymour Hoffman Brad Pitt Johnny Depp Denzel Washington And, I gotta give a shout out to Ben Stiller...I know he isn't viewed as a great actor, but it doesn't matter if the movie is good or bad, he cracks me up. If he's in it, I know they'll be enough funny parts in the movie to make it worth watching.
