My nephew's Road to Recovery (Update: Four Years Later)

Featured Replies

Wish him the best from spindoc and family. He's young, he'll heal fine, and the best part,,,,,,,,,,tell him that Chicks dig casts!! And that's really all that matters.

Little man, if you're reading this, I sure hope you are up and around soon. Sounds like you're a terrific player, and I'm sure you'll be back in action very soon. GOD BLESS YOU!

I'm glad to hear your nephew is doing better. A little boy was taken off the field in a stretcher at the game I was at on Saturday. It was a scary situation at first until we found out that it was just a stinger according to one of the players' parent (who's a paramedic), but they took every precaution to keep him immobilized just in case. We waited 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

So sorry to hear this. Yes, it is much tougher being the visitor than the one being visitied. PH and I want him and his family to know that we sent prayers and he, you and the family are in our thoughts. Little one's can come through some pretty amazing things...just have faith!!!!

Well, hopefully, today is the last day of dealing with hospitals. Today was kind of interesting though. When we got to his room, nobody was there. In the old days, we would have sat there for hours waiting for their return. But through the magic of cell phones, we called my brother and found out they had gone up three floors to the play room. So we headed on up.

As the elevator neared the 6th floor, we could hear some drums beating in the distance. It got louder...

...and louder...

...and louder!

Finally, by the time we got to the play room, you could hardly hear yourself think. And what I was thinkin' was, "Turn off the gawdang drums!"

Turns out, some guy that is a self-proclaimed expert in "therapeutic drumming" was in town and subjecting the kids to what he thought was entertaining. It was him, and three do-gooder therapists (Don't get me started on that subject) sitting in a circle and African-drumming their brains out....with one little kid.

Garret, my brother, my folks and I sat there next to them trying to communicate and make Lego buildings. Unfortunately, the seismic tremors from the non-stop (and I mean, non-stop) drum-fest kept knocking the buildings down. This guy's PR claims that the rhythms promote a healing energy...or some such new-age nonsense. I just hope it works on migraines. :irked:

Anyway, things got better after that. Two ladies from the zoo came and brought a couple animals. We got to see a horn-billed something bird, and what appeared to be a rat-like creature. The kids weren't allowed to touch the animals. But the rat-like creature did find a way to reach out to the children. Being held in mid-air, he turbo-pee'd on some poor kid. So, the day wasn't all bad.

Garret should get to come home tomorrow. We're planning a little welcome home party. He's got a long road back to his old self again, but he'll do just fine. As for football -- after talking to his mom.....................stay tuned. ;) I don't care really, as long as he's happy.

I know this shouldn't be about me, but personally, this thing was a real wake up call. I won't take things for granted anymore, and I don't ever want to let him down again. Yeah, he's got lots of aunts, uncles, cousins and the like. But I'm his Godfather, he's my only nephew, and he's likely the closest I'll ever come to having a son of my own. And he was born (against the odds) right smack in the middle of the worst days of my life. So, he's kinda extra-special for a lot of reasons.

I hope you'll forgive me if I've gone on a little too much the last couple days. There are folks right here on BGP dealing with much worse things. And this will someday just be a memory. But you all have been a true comfort to, not just me, but to Garret, his parents and sister, and the whole extended family.

I'll keep ya' posted. :thumb:

Birdsfan, thanks so much for the updates. I know just how special those nephews can be...they grow up much too quickly(IMO). I will definitely keep Garret and you in my prayers. Hope he gets to go home tomorrow and has a very speedy recovery.

At first I thought Garret was was going to be on the drums! Children's hospital is a good place for the most part. They do have good play room's. (also great doctor's, nurse's and staff).

Yeah, I was making fun a little; but that place is awesome, and they have so many great things for the kids--as evidenced by all the activities today. There's no better place to turn in the event your child needs medical care.

Tell Garret that he has thoughts and prayers from the Sunshine State, too!

BF, thanks for the update and don't apologize about telling us. Sometimes having other people to think about makes my problems seem smaller. What is the saying? Worry shared is worry halved?

Just one more thing I forgot to say. When we got to his room today, there was a really cool basket of goodies sitting there with a football-shaped Bengals balloon tied to it. It was from Gallatin County -- the opposing team. Very classy gesture!

That was classy indeed!

Yes very classy and I am sure the little guy enjoyed that. A big thank you to Gallatin co from the folks on BGP. Way to go. ! !

Garret was released from the hospital this afternoon, and I had the chance to visit with him after he got home. He was a little grumpy and tired, but generally looking 100% better than the other night. He's running a bit of a temp this evening, and that is a little worrisome; but otherwise he's coping pretty well. And his little sister (who is usually bouncing off the walls) has been tending to his every need. It's really sweet to see.

Oh...one of his uncles was going out the door and joked, "Don't play any football while I'm gone!" Garret came back with, "The doctor said I can't play for two months!" Hmm...;)

I think he's starting to put the idea back on the table. Some of his teammates have signed his cast, and he added his own jersey number to it today. So, we'll see.

I know when I was a kid, it was always like a sense of pride when you got hurt, I'd bet he'll want to give football another go, as long as mom stays out the way :D

That sad look, tugs at your heart. Tell him to diagram a few offensive plays for the team, to help get his mind back on football and with his pals.

Main thing, is healing properly and giving it time. "Boy this leg is itching", will be his comments soon....
