August 16, 200719 yr UC was one of the worst BCS teams in Hoops. I don't care what they return, the best result is gaining a small dose of respectability. Is that where you see the UK D??? Why not? Teams will already respect our offense. If our defense becomes respectable, too, then I say we have a program headed in the right direction.
August 16, 200719 yr You can focus on any game you like. My point is that the Cats were a very young, inconsistent defense last year. They experienced highs and lows. Another year together and you have to think they'll be better and more consistent. So where do they finish nationally? 80? That's a big jump. What say you???

August 16, 200719 yr Don't they get some pretty good players back who were injured at the end of the season? With that and a new coordinator I think they will be improved. How much remains to be seen.

Some are professing that it is the argument of the thread. But I believe most are just saying they will be a little better (which is hard not for them to be). Even if they do improve in some capacity, I am not sure how much of a difference anyone will be able to tell (does that make sense?).

I don't think anyone thinks the UK D will be 'amazing', but younger players do get better with time and experience. Experience is often learning what not to do, and through large stretches of last season, UK's D learned that. To be amazing, nearly all the returning players on the defensive side of the football would have to show Woodson-like improvement from one year to the next, ... and while that would be wonderful, ... it is certainly not likely. I simply think they will be better and more consistent this year than last.
August 16, 200719 yr It's really not as bad as some may think. Last year, it was good enough to beat GA, Clemson, and have close games against (my favorite) UT and USC. Held the national champs to 26 in Gainesville. I'd say that last year was definately a pretty good start.

August 16, 200719 yr Monroe is division 1A. UK defense will probably still stink. But I think they will improve. Maybe around 80-90 instead of 118. GO CATS!
August 16, 200719 yr How about when it's the worst unit? I'm sorry, but the UK D will have to prove a LOT to get my respect. They were young and almost always AWFUL. It's a good thing they all return? I'd love to see you guys lining up if I said the UC hoops team was going to be far better than last year... UK's D struggled last year, but I think they'll be better off this year as well, for a few reasons. 1. Kentucky's D was very young last year, and they're now all a year older with another year (or in some cases just 1 year) of experience under their belt. That also includes a full year of offseason weight training & conditioning as well. 2. Last year was one of Kentucky's best recruiting classes in a long time. That class featured prized recruit Micah Johnson who had quality time last year as a true freshman. Simply put, true freshman don't normally belong on the field in the SEC, but due to Kentucky's lack of depth we were forced to put a lot of guys (frosh & soph's) in to compete against the cream of the crop. 3. This is the year that the nucleus has been waiting for. Andre Woodson, Rafael Little, Keenan Burton, Wesley Woodyard, etc. This is their final year and I think they've developed the leadership skills & confidence to carry the momentum from last year's success into this year on both sides of the ball. 4. Mike Archer is gone. He was dismal. 5. The offense returns nearly everyone. It's tough for the D to be scored on when the offense is on the field the majority of the time. Hopefully that'll be the case for the '07 Cats. 6. I'm a Kentucky fan and always hope for the best.
