I was in the 8th grade and our family went to Daytona Beach for vacation. We drove down to Cape Kennedy and watched Apollo 11, the first to land on the moon, blast off. It was pretty cool.

That had to be awesome, Pigman. Did you realize the significance of it at the time?

The 1975 school year including the busing riot on Preston Highway.

 

I was at Southern for a football game and was told for safety reasons I couldn't leave the area. After about an hour the football coach led a caravan of other coaches and players in a cross country jaunt to the back of Southern's property we got out.

 

Earlier a teacher who had attempted to leave through the main entrance onto Preston Highway had been pulled through his shattered windshield and beaten. It was fairly scary.

 

The whole experience of being in school that year was bizarre. I was one of a very small percentage of white students who was in school every day rather then boycotting as most did. I rode a school bus (as I recall I was the only student most mornings for about a month) with an armed National Guardsman. There was also a very large armed presence within the school. The first day of school all students had to report to the gym to see where their homeroom was so they could be given their schedules. I looked on the list that should have included me and I wasn't there. Somehow I had disappeared. I spent the rest of that day in the office having my schedule reworked and being re-entered into the system. Several weeks later my parents received a truant notice. It seems that someone thought I should be attending Moore High School, the irony being that to that point I had not missed one day of school. Reassigning every student in the county was a huge nightmare.

 

At the shopping center directly across the street from the school the "official" protest area was set up. There was a constant blaring of car horns as passing motorists "honked" their support for protesters.

 

Most businesses in the area has signs opposing forced busing in their windows and gas stations refused to sell gasoline to school buses forcing the county to set up bus compounds and purchase fuel in bulk for the buses.

 

Until the final 3 weeks of the season all of our football games were played on Friday afternoons and when we went to another school we always had a police escort. Our first game back under the lights was at the old Stuart High School. On a hill visible from the field a cross could be seen burning.

 

It was a fairly strange time.

I was at The Who concert in Cincinnati on December 3, 1979.

Yes I pretty much did. We were about 2 miles from it across a bay, but it was so big it wasn't hard to see. The ground shook where we were standing I will never forget it.

I had a US President climb on top of me and use me for support to shake hands in a crowd for a few minutes. Very awkward, but I was in the front being pushed forward and he started reaching over me to shake people behind me's hands. He then kept climbing to reach farther back and then used my shoulder as a leaning post and kept climbing. After he got back down he kept his hand on me and shook my hand too. Maybe not overly historic, but it was for me...

For me I'd say I was one of millions who witnessed the second plane hit at the world trade center and the collapse of both twin towers. I wasn't there, but did watch it live and won't ever forget those images.
