Henderson County Open Again!

Featured Replies

This thing's been fishy since the day the story broke. First, a press release was sent out late Wednesday afternoon of last week announcing Cobb as the man. Then the next morning Cobb told WSON that he did not accept the position. Then he called the station back a couple of hours later and said he had accepted and that he was told they wouldn't release the story until he had a chance to meet with the team. Guess he got a little ticked.

Then he came to Henderson, met the team, interviewed a few coaches (Friday), went with the team to a passing league in Bowling Green (Saturday), went home and then calls back at 9 a.m today (Monday) and said he wasn't coming. What a guy.

He did sign a contract and said he would overnight his resignation tomorrow.

The hiring committee is meeting this afternoon and we should have number two choice offered the job at any time.

This is the second time in the last three hires that this has happened to HC. In '94, Tom Duffy was the THIRD choice. Marty Jaggers was number one but turned them down.

Of course, we all know about the railroad job between the Supt. and Tom Duffy in getting the job for little Duffy three years ago. No interviews that time, and only one offer--to little Duffy, on an "interim" basis.

Here's hoping they don't go "interim" this time.

Isn't he or anyone, allowed to change his mind. We make decisions every day, where to eat, shop, bank, etc....People often take a job, find out they don't like it and leave.

Sounds like, he accepted and changed, for whatever reason. His choice, but it does affect both schools.

You should see him, at the dinner table....:D

Thats fine but you can't go to Ruth Criss, order the filet and when they bring it to the table take a couple of bites, then decide I've changed my mind I don't feel like steak and just leave.

No but you can decide you don't want to eat it. You might have to pay your bill but then you can leave. I think that fits this situation better. He's taking some heat as payment but he did what he felt was right. He took a job, he didn't join the military--you can quit regular jobs.

I'm not saying that anyone is right or wrong here, but at what point does it become fairly silly for these guys to keep taking jobs and then running back? How much thought is actually being put into these changes. Their jobs are not like our "Burger Hut" jobs, but what happens when one of these schools tells one of these coaches that took another job, essentially RESIGNING, and then decides to give that position up, too and come on back "home" after 15 or 20 minutes as a new coach elsewhere, "well, we're sorry, but you apparently did not want to be here, so we're going to go another direction."

Everyone for the most part would want their heads. It's not the military.

You're right. In the military, you have to keep your word or pay the consequences. You are responsible for what YOU do there, and when some one feels like you cut and run on them, it takes forever, if ever, to get their respect or loyallty back. It's teamwork in the military, not like football or basketball.......oh, wait, there IS teamwork there and should be mutual respect, too. Think things through before you do them and you won't look like the world's biggest idiot or have to take the flak that comes with the territory. Life does not, nor should not, have a safety net. All we really have in this world is our word and honor, and lately that does not mean anything at all. These coaches are teaching kids by example everyday, and they are teaching them that going ahead and breaking your word is o.k. as long as it makes you feel better. This is going to get a lot worse, just wait and see.

RogerBill makes some good points. I happened to pick up WSON on the road Thursday morning, hours after reading of Cobb's move to Henderson on BGP, and heard the radio host say that the job hadn't officially been filled yet.

It makes you wonder if Cobb didn't like the way some things were handled on the Henderson end, and that was enough to cast some doubts and/or second thoughts.

Unreal to say the least. Feel bad for the kids at HC. Hope things work out the best for them in the end!

He was aware that he had a son in high school and would be leaving former players behind when he accepted the job. If he hadn't already considered these issues, he never should have accepted the job in the first place.

Things happen in life. I would not lynch him quit yet until you know the whole story. Who knows when you find out just why he changed his mind some just might have wished they would have waited bfore they tied the rope. I understand that it does not look good on the surface. I once accepted a promotion and three days later for personal reasons had to back out. I knew it did not look good, but one thing was for sure. My family came first. They always have and they always will.

At the end of the day we all have to make decisions that we think are the best for our families and ourselves. How many of us can say we have not made a life changing decision that in hind sight we would love the chance to take back. I know I have as I would say most of you have. I applauded Donovan for his decision and I applaud Cobb here. In both cases they knew the second guessers and arm chair QB's would be all over them, but they both made a decision that they felt they could live with easier.

Nice point, Time2punt, it's difficult knowing that Cobb came to town, met his "future" team, and then walked out on them a couple of days later. It's really sad for the Colonel kids, who have obviously gone through a lot the last nine months. Cobb told his kids at Somerset that he was moving on and even made the comment to the media in Henderson that he was "gong home," which is a feel good thing. Then, changes his mind.

Obviously, in the scope of things, Hendo is a much better job than Somerset, and that's not a put down of the Brian Jumpers. They have got it going up there.

But, there's still something untold here that changed Cobb's perception after he came to town. Was it the landscape (lawsuit cloud, the administration, the condition of the program). Or, did Supt. Wilson Sears, a former fb coaching great in his own time, talk him into staying or did he "sweetin the pot."

Only Jaybird could answer these questions.

Hope Cobb likes Somerset because he will never get another job offer. Cobb better plan on retiring at Florida - sorry, I mean Somerset.

Even if he signed a contract by law he has three days to recant...

No, he does not. This is not a car or a VHA loan.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...there is something wrong at Henderson Co. I can't put my finger on it, and won't even try to, but there is something wrong there. My bet is that Cobb knew he was getting into a place that was a situation that was hardly as ideal as so many people seem to think it is. Good move by Cobb. He has a better shot at winning on the carpet at Somerset, a stadium and fan backing that is just as good, and is in a place that is not under the microscope of the media, fans, and community after the tragedy of last year.

Heck, there is something wrong with Henderson, but I will not go there. One area that I will write about is the divide here in this community. Some of us actually liked watching Duffy teams, but there have been a large number of folks who have been upset for a very long time. They are bitter and feel left out (I can understand that). However, some of them are still going at it (power struggle?). As far as football, I do believe next season will be a long season for whoever takes the job. The talent pool we have has been narrowed by Duffy, and their will many new faces the next couple of seasons. We are geared like a 1A school right now, and there are tons of problems that come with this situation just within football. Tom and Duffer could win with this framework, but now that they are gone and it being so late, this thing looks like a mess.

As aggravating as it is for some to realize...in athletics of all levels...coaching jobs are accepted and not accepted for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately the general public wants to lay "BLAME" somewhere...we have come to be known as the great blame society in America these days.

In our situation at Morgan Co...everyone on internet chat boards, dinner tables, and offices felt like they "knew" why we had (2) coaches accept and resign over the last couple of months before getting our newest coach. However, they haven't the foggiest of clues or ideas....people these days always want to look at "Adminstrative support" which is arguably the most over-rated and vaguely described excuse in our "blaming" sports world. When in all actuality, it's something very simple and true as to why coaches accept and then decline. Family reasons and many personal things that are non-controlable are and have been contributing factors here. Heck, the last coach Morgan got is still interested in who will be at the helm, and has an interest in the community even though they cannot be here. It's things in which there is really "No blame" whatsoever on any part...

In addition, the coaching profession will rarely see the 20-30 year committment of even home town folk. Coaches are now wanting new challenges in their professional career and as aggravating as it is to some...making the moves to stay or go are sometimes deeper than what's on the surface and at the same time are as harmless and simple in which there is no one to blame.

I don't have a clue to any of the reasons why coach Cobb accepted and then declined. That is his business...but I will always raise a brow when I hear the following excuses that usually start with the words "THEY" or "I heard" or things like that.

In today's world...it's going to happen and coaches will come and go. More will accept and more will decline. The only difference between coaches personal decisions today and in 1986 is the fact that now we can communicate these moves in a matter of seconds with message boards and sports talk.

I would venture to say that "Principles" that coaches believe in are much the same today as they were over 20 years ago....the only difference that I see in the athletic world and a ton of evidence to support it...is that coaches are going to become more and more mobile in the years to come.
