Just going by what I saw. I watched the 25 - 0 East Ridge game at the Tates Creek tourney and the same guys that started, finished the game. Not saying that Cov Cath ran up the score or intentionally padded stats, but didn't see any subs.

Ryle subs when they get up 7 or 8 runs because they have so many seniors and the juniors aren't getting any JV games in so Roesel has to get them in whenever possible. Thus, averages are lower, but for the greater good of the program next year.

 

DD, one thing to remember, and I am not talking about the "ER" game as I will take the word of cch5432 on that, is that CovCath at times is starting five sophomores. That's five sophomores starting, with only Maile having any real experience on the varsity level. While Isler did play last year, he really didn't start that much. With that many young men who have little or no varsity experience, I am sure Coach Krumps is giving these young men as many innings as he can....

You sure about that? I heard first hand from players about most of the pitchers playing positions in the field. And I am positive that after they were up 12 (3 or 4 innings) Maile was out and Curtin was behind the plate.

 

You heard wrong, I saw Malie at second base and Larkin behind the plate the whole game. Malie, Larkin. Pop and Blesser all hit in the first and last inning from what I recall. Again, not saying that they were padding stats and they stopped stealing when they got up 10 or 12, but who else is coach K gonna put in?

I stated my opinion in a thread about 2 months ago, and that was that Maile was a step above everyone else in the ninth region. I had probably 15 people tell me I was being too generous. So far, I was pretty accurate... only Farris is keeping up with him.

 

I still stand behind the fact that he WILL be player of the year probably the next three years, and all others mentioned in this thread are good players, but not at the same level as Maile (and Farris).

Lastly, for the person that said that Catching is so much easier than playing shortstop (I can't believe I am even wasting my time commenting here)... first off, I don't even think that Farris is catching for Boone. He started out the season in Centerfield, and I have not heard otherwise. Even if he was catching, try catching 7 games in a eight day stretch and still have enough drive in your legs to hit the ball 400 feet. Ain't no Shortstops out there hitting them with that kind of drive. Maybe the shortstops should do some squats to strengthen those legs up.

 

Regardless, saying that playing shortstop is strenuos and catching is easy has been playing in too many softball beer leagues. :irked: :irked:

He caught against Ryle....don't know where he's played in other games.

What about the kid from Highlands, Allen I think is the name??? From what I've seen he's had a terrific year at the plate AND on the mound. Not to take anything away from any of the other guys mentioned of course....I'd take 'em all.

 

 

OR22, that was very nice of you to point out Patrick Allen. Hitting .438, leading in extra bases category and one of the leaders in strike outs (not like Adam Dunn; rather in a positive way as a pitcher). Even more important is really doing a super job as a leader of a Bluebird team that is surprising a lot of people. I'm not saying he should be the POY as I've not seen Maile or Farris, but based on what Patrick is doing and what the Birds are doing, he at least deserves some mention, and again, it was nice of you to do so.

With the pitching aspect thrown in I also like Allen in the conversation. However, Maile would get my vote at this point. After looking at the stats one thing I will mention on the team standings is that I'm surprised at the number of losses Ryle and CCH have at this point. I really didn't expect that though with their tough schedules I should have. I guess I didn't expect them to lose except against each other. Shows what I know.

The teams both CCH and Ryle lost to were very solid baseball teams and all top 20 teams. The only questionable loss I have for Ryle would be Highlands, but that isn't looking so bad now, as Highlands is really getting on a roll and beating some other good teams.

 

Remember, anything can happen in baseball. Just like I believe 3 years ago when not only did Holmes beat Covcath in their district seeding game, but Ludlow won the district.

If I were to vote today, I would pick Maile. My reasons are simple.

 

One, CovCath has played a much tougher schedule at this point in the season, and thus Maile has faced much tougher pitchers, or a lack of easy teams that Boone County faced early in the season. His BA, RBI's, HR's etc. have been earned against some of the toughest teams not only in NKy, but against some outstanding Ohio teams as well as some quality ranked team from around the rest of the Commonwealth

 

Two, Maile is a much better catcher as he blocks balls in the dirt much better than Corry does, and IMO has a stronger arm. While Corrys arm is outstanding, Maile's is a cannon.

 

Maile is playing his natural position, but I really think Corry is not a catcher but rather a outfielder where he could use he speed to his advantage......

 

Again this is my vote at this point of the season.... It may well change as the season draws to an end.....

Not sure CC has played all that much tougher of a schedule, have they? BC did have some lighter competition early on, but has since played several ranked teams, including LCA, Eastern, Boyd, and CC. CC has played a number of ranked teams also - Owensboro Cathloic, Danville, Ballard, Boyle. Overall it would appear CC has played a tougher schedule, but only slightly.

 

It might also be a leap to assume that Maile has automatically faced tougher pitching simply because their schedule is a bit harder. Even weaker/smaller schools can have one ace pitcher on their staff and frequently throw that pitcher when they face a larger school. So unless someone actually knows the specific pitchers they've faced, it would probably be unfair to assume that Farris has built his stats against weaker pitching.

 

If the decision ends up coming down to these two players, it will not be decided on their defensive abilities, as this is a very subjective determination. They are both great catchers. Farris did start out the season at DH and OF for a few games because of an injury that prevented him from catching, but has pretty much been the full-time catcher since. Of course, this is not to say that the POY has to come from the catching position anyways.

 

It is interesting that Maile has so many more at-bats than Farris when their teams have played about the same number of games. I know Farris was injured early on and did not even practice until a few days before the season started, so perhaps they limited his AB's the first few games. Just guessing though.

Fwiw: the story is about the same at CCH...Maile gets walked a lot...1 or 2 a game...I think he's at 20 to 25 on the year...he moved to 3 spot with Isler moving to 4..btw, who votes on this? Coaches I'd guess?

I know now for a fact that everyone on the team including pitchers who were playing the last 3 innings got 2 AB's. I saw Niehaus at 2B, Koester at 1B, Curtin behind the plate, John Wehry playing CF, Alex Smith playing RF. But Maile, Larkin, Bleser, and Popham only played the first 2 innings.

This young man does it all for the Tigers, plays the best outfield in the region, is one of the top three pitchers and is probably one of the offensive leaders in the region as well. No team in NKY has played a tougher schedule than Beechwood and Cody gets the ball in most of these games. As good as he is as a player he is just as good as a young man. He is the only starter that returned from last years All "A" champions and overall state runner up team. He probably has more riding on his shoulders than any player in the region and has led the Tigers to a great year so far including a return to defend their title in the All "A" this weekend at Applebee's. The other players mentioned are all very nice but none have suceeded on the stage that Cody has.

Great post! Cody's downfall is he probably don't have those all important big stats but who knows since they are not reported to the paper, since they are not listed. If there was a vote for best all around player, Cody is top choice w/my vote. As knight points out, he does it all and does it all well. I would have to guess if the K's were reported for pitching he might be leading. I am pretty sure his batting avg is over .400. He has to be the best outfielder in the region as his arm & speed are remarkable and might be the best pitcher also.

 

Maile/Farris are tremendous catchers and great hitters, the best, as I would say Reed/Allen are the best SS. POY, hard to say. It depends on what stats are important to coaches and how well all these players did against their teams. Good luck to all these fine young men, which is the most important stat they all have, they are great young men.

I agree, my vote is with Elliot. Wish I had kept my own stats to back it up.
