9th Region POY????

Featured Replies

Pro doesn't have to mean MLB only. Pro to me means drafted and signed to a professional contract.

Excuse me, you are exactly right. However, do you realize how many kids sign a professional contract in baseball? Actually, it in not that big of deal, IMO signing a major league contract unless you sign in the first 2 rnds. After that, good luck, they will spend the rest of their life in the minors w/very few exceptions. Making it to the big leagues is a very long and drug out process. Ask a few of NKY's best about making it big, Brandon Berger, Tim Grogan, Scott Wiggins just to name a few.

in this day and age, IMO 6'3 or more.... and a big frame of a body. Catchers take a beating everyday, and when you consider that the better ones catch five to six games a week, it is tough on their body. Listen Corry is a player, one of the best in the area, and he is as close to a sure thing turning pro one day as there is, but with his speed, he isn't going to be playing catcher. Why would a college or pro coach not use his speed to their advantage. Boone needs a catcher, Corry is a top athletic, so he catchers, but he will not play that position on a everyday occasion at the next level.....if so, he will never reach his full potential.

6'3" seems like a lot of size to be able to drop and block the ball and be quick from knees to toes. It also seems like there are a lot of "fire hydrant" looking catchers out there. IMO it would seem logical that a defensive back type body style would work well in that position...

cooperstown.....Thank you for putting the facts out there. Just to let everyone know that all the potential schools at the moment have recruited Corey as a Catcher. Not a CF or 2nd baseman (I don't where that would ever come from). Just like everyone else I understand completely that catching is grueling on the body. Playing a posistion like center field IMO would benefit him and his future. But even with that being said Corey has all the tools to catch and he has improved leaps and bounds every season back there. As long as he is successful and doing a good job behind the plate then why change him? That is his natural position that he has played his whole life. Why mess with that? Just thought I would post my theory....Anyway as for the Elliot situation. Watched him against Boone last night and came away very impressed especially with him at the plate. His hands are so quick to the ball and he has a great approach up there. Good arm in center. The only flaw I saw was he misplayed a line drive hit a little behind him into a triple. He broke in on a line shot that kept rising over his head. He got twisted up on the play. But I am just nit picking because as all outfielders know those line shots hit right at you are the toughest to play.

5-14-07 Enquirer Stats....DD's point system. Gives 2 points for 1st in a catagory and 1 point for second. This recoginizes the players who excell in all catagories, although some want to make it a HR contest.

AVERAGE

Taylor - 79/41=.518...2 points

Wagner - 88/45=.511...1 point

Reed - 80/40=.500...0

Maile - 94/44=.468...0

Farris - 74/33=.445...0

Allen - 95/41=.431...0

DOUBLES

Maile - 11...2 points

Allen - 10...1 point

Wagner - 10...1 point

Taylor - 9...0

Farris - 6...0

Reed - 6...0

TRIPLES

Wagner - 4...2 points

Taylor - 2...1 point

HOME RUNS

Farris - 8...2 points

Maile - 6...1 point

Allen - 5...0

Reed - 5...0

Taylor - 4...0

RBI's

Maile - 53...2 points

Farris - 36...1 point

Taylor - 35...0

Allen - 34...0

Reed - 33...0

Wagner - 17...0

RUNS

Wagner - 48...2 points

Farris - 42...1 point

Taylor - 36...0

Maile - 32...0

Reed - 31...0

Allen - 26...0

Farris - 23...2 points

Wagner - 17...1 point

Totals

Wagner...7 points

Farris...6 points

Taylor...5 points

Maile...5 points

Maile has generated 79 runs, that is impressive! As is Farris leading in both homeruns and stolen bases. Still, it looks like there are 4 or 5 players who could be the choice.

Having 4 triples is not the same as having 53 RBIs. Having 6 HRs is not the same as hitting .500+. Having a bunch of stolen bases is not the same as scoring a bunch of runs.

I'm going to assume the voters will vote on ALL of the players in NKY and not just the ones whose stats make the paper.

You then have to add in the subjective analysis that you can't put a stat with.

Congrats to Mr. Wagner, though, for winning the DD POY.

I think your system may have some flaws, if I may.

You have left some people out of the stats that would greatly change your point system (which in and of itself has some flaws IMHO).

For instance, in AVG. the leaders are actually:

Brake .523

Taylor .518

Wagner .511

You have excluded the true average leader (Brake), which isn't fair for two reasons:

1) he is having a fine overall season and even though his name may not be mentioned in this thread as a possible POY candidate perhaps it should be;

2) eliminating stats of category leaders simply because someone has personally determined they are not a POY candidate ends up "over-valuing" the stats of players below them.

DBL

Maile 11

4 players with 10

This is important because under the point system you are using, the 4 players tied at 2nd should split the 1 point (each get 1/4 pt.) If you don't do it this way, you end up de-valuing the 2 pts. given to first place.

TPL

Wagner 4

Franzen 3

Numerous with 2 (Taylor should receive no pts. under your system)

RBI

Maile 53

Farris 36

Murray 36

Again, important because Farris and Murray would each get 1/2 for 2nd place.

SB

Taylor 23

Farris 23

Larkin 19

Several with 18

Important because Taylor and Farris would each get 1 1/2 pts. and no one else would get any pts. at all.

Stats alone are a dangerous thing sometimes. The reason your point system doesn't work in my mind is this: Is there really much of a difference between someone driving in 36 runs (Farris) and 35 runs (Taylor)? Yet Farris would get one point and Taylor none under your sytem. Doesn't seem equitable.

Also, while hitting is certainly important - it's tough to win games if you get shut out - pitching is also kind of important. I didn't see you list any pitching stats anywhere.

To be certain, all the players you listed are excellent players, but I don't think your point system necessarily identifies the best player. I'm not saying it doesn't, mind you, just that it's not that simple.

Having 4 triples is not the same as having 53 RBIs. Having 6 HRs is not the same as hitting .500+. Having a bunch of stolen bases is not the same as scoring a bunch of runs.

Still a week to go. And if you know of a better way to weigh the catagories let's hear it. As I said before, my most imporntant stats are:

On Base % - which we don't have

Batting Average -

Fielding % - which we don't have

Those 3 show the most well rounded player IMO.

IRBI

Maile 53

Farris 36

Murray 36

.

You also discount the dominance of a stat by using a 2-1-0 system. Farris, in the example, would have one less point regardless of the delta between him and Maile. By this logic, whomever was 2nd to Bonds when he hit 73 HRs would have only one less point should all other stats be equal. However, I don't think voters would look at the race as being only "one point apart." This gets back to the subjective analysis that I mentioned.

Having 4 triples is not the same as having 53 RBIs. Having 6 HRs is not the same as hitting .500+. Having a bunch of stolen bases is not the same as scoring a bunch of runs.

Agree with your first two sentences. SB's is a pretty important category IMO, however. It puts a lot of extra pressure on the pitcher and middle infielders and also puts a guy in scoring position, as evidenced by the fact that the players leading in SB's in the paper (Taylor, Farris, Larkin, McQueen, Wagner, etc..) are the same players leading in Runs Scored.

Where are they getting offers from? Good luck to both young men!

Diamond Dandy - I too am interested in where Wagner & Taylor have been offered.

Does anyone have a list of past POY in the 9th?

I'm assuming that no pitcher has won it recently. The only real option I can think of is Harmon in '01 or '02, but I'd imagine Grogan won it then.

My point is that not all categories are equal.

The kid from BW last year but he was both an outstanding pitcher and an outstanding hitter.

Strictly pitcher? Don't recall any recently.

First of all, know that I don't have a dog in this hunt. My son plays JV ball. ;)

You are right. The paper is missing a few very key stats. Not to mention I suspect they are missing some stats for some other quality potential candidates (Elliott?).

A suggestion that might improve your point system - Instead of awarding separate points for the DBL, TPL, and HR categories (TPL ends up being way overvalued, IMO), it would make more sense to award points (perhaps a 5-4-3-2-1 system) for "Extra Base Hits". When you add DB+TPL+HR together, the leaders look like:

Maile 17

Allen 15

Taylor 15

Farris 14

Murray 14

Wagner 14

If you want to be even more accurate, "Total Bases" might even be better. I did this very quickly (I'm sure I missed someone or made a mathematical error somewhere) and came up with:

Maile 73

Allen 66

Taylor 66

Farris 63

Wagner 63

Reed 61

Given the Allen kid's pitching stats, I would think he would get strong consideration. And for the record, I do not know this kid or anything about him. Just going purely off stats.
