I could see giving batting average the highest weight. - Best indicator of what a players on base % might be absent the actual stat.

 

Runs scored second. - Means you get on base a lot through hits, walks, errors ect, are probably capable of helping yourself to a stolen base and determine the outcome of every game.

 

Stolen Bases third. - pressure on the D and changes how a pitcher might pitch the hitter at the plate.

 

Extra bases fourth. - These stats show that a player has a combination of power and speed. To triple, you have to hit the ball in a part of the park that will allow you about 12 seconds to make it to third.

 

Home Runs fifth. - Most over rated stat in the High School game. They are few and far between and seldom determine the outcome of the game consistently. As a coach I would not want to have to depend on a HR to win a game for me. They usually come against weaker competition, other then in the Beechwood / Cov Cath game, which was an exception.

 

RBI's last - The run batted in can be generated by a sac bunt or fly, fielders choice or error. In other words, all you have to do is make contact with a runner in scoring position, you don't even have to be safe yourself. Beshies a leadoff hitter is at a disadvantage because he is depending on the 7, 8 or 9 hitter to get on base to drive in, where the 3 or 4 hitter depends on better contact hitters to get on base.

I don't know if anyone has won it back to back or not, but I'd guess that Grogan (CCH '02) and Jeff Wera (Beechwood '04) both came pretty close.

Winning back to back POY would be hard to tell considering there is at least 3of them. One from the Northern Kentucky Baseball Coaches Association(the old ninth region-Scott, Simon kenton, Campbell Co Brossart etc) the Kentucky Post, and the Enquirer.

 

Heck all these guys could win one!!

For the record, it is a 5-man race for the POY. However, my original point was that IMO I think the voters will not have it as a 5-man race. I think that fielding % , for example, will not come into play for the voters and I'm assuming its not the coaches but, rather, writers. OB% is probably not going to come into play. Average, RBIs, runs, HRs, plus pitching stats are what the voters will look at when deciding. SO, with that assumption, I think Mr. Wagner is going to have a hard time coming out on top. He's got the average and probably runs but I still think he comes up short. Maile/Farris will be there. Allen and Elliott will be there because of the combo of hitting and defense. So even though Wags would start at SS for any all-star team put together and probably bat leadoff and be a major contributor, I think it will be one of the 4 listed. If I'm wrong, I'll be the 2nd one to congratulate Mr. Wagner on an outstanding/hard to believe season. He's obviously a special player.

I think we both got a little carried away last night and I appoligize. Sometimes when we see these kids working so hard on and off the field we feel like they deserve recognition. We tend to forget that it's just baseball and the kids are having a blast, especially this time of season. All of the above mentioned work hard every day and produce outstanding results.

The one common factor that I would bet a million bucks on is that if you asked any of these kids, the Win is more imporntant then any award, and that's why they work so hard.

For what it's worth with Farris, I have been told by multiple people that he has been contacted by pro scouts that have told him he doesn't need to be playing catcher. I don't know the exact reasoning behind that but if I were him, I'd listen.

the reason for this is because he has been a catcher all through high school, and maybe even before that. if he were to play catcher all through college (if he goes) and in the majors (if he goes) he will be sidelined with knee surgery before you know it. most catchers in the mlb were converted to catchers.

First of all, where do you get catchers being coverted when they get to the majors. Name one... That's the craziest thing i've ever heard. Catchers usually covert to other positions for their off days from behind the plate.

 

As for Farris, I know the family and no scout that has ever showed interest has said anything about him not being a catcher. In every showcase he has participated in, he has been in the catching position, and has played very little outfield. So, I really don't know where this info is coming from... check the source.

You need to get out more .There is alot of baseball out side of Florence .To say hands down you have not seen enough .

I personally think there should be heavy influence in to how the players perform in the big games. It's true that there are many of us that cannot get out to see all of these players. I don't feel like the stats can be reliable because of the different competition, and also because there is a different statistician for each team (one persons .325 can easily be a .375). People score each game differently, give the edge to the kid who pulls through in the clutch.

One thing is for sure. It is not a 'hands down' decision. It is definitely a good race between 4 or 5 quality baseball players...
