Agreed on no perfect system. However, you cannot use an "alll stats are equal" equation. Stats are part of the basis for the choice but there will always be and should always be a subjective determination made as well.

I agree, but these kids are not on TV every night and unfortunately we don't get to see all of them play everyday to form a better opinion. At best we see them 3 times a year so we have to rely on stats. I just wish they would post D stats as well. As far as relative, I think they are based on the fact that they play SIMILAR competion, they all face SIMILAR pitching and they all have to drop the ball into a gap between 8 players facing them and one behind them a high precentage of the time to be successful.

I can't see doubles, triples and stolen bases coming into play much when people start to think player of the year. Home runs, average, rbi's, runs and on base percentage is how I sense people weight their opinions. Pitchers definetly seem to be left out of the equation. It would be interesting to hear how people view the stat categories in order of importance.

I would say in order of imporntance.

1- Batting Average

2-on Base %

3-Stolen bases

4-Fielding %

5-Runs Scored

 

These things control the outcome of games everyday

 

6-Home Runs (very few determine the outcome of a game and usually come against weaker pitching)

7-RBI (can't knock them in if they are not on base)

I'll take a stab at it.

 

1. Hit

2. Walk

3. Error

4. HBP

5. Catcher's Interference

6. Fielder's Choice

7. Strike out and PB or WP.

I was the one who suggested Boone's Mark Reed should get some consideration. 2 2-run HRs, 4 RBI, and an intentional walk today in Boone's win over Campbell Co. keeps him in the discussion.

If you saw the CovCath Beechwood game today, you would realize why young Maile is without a doubt the POY in the Ninth Region. Sorry guy's, the kid can flat out hit, and can play the most important and most difficult position on the diamond. His tag of the Beechwood runner in the first inning was a thing of beauty, and a play most HS catchers can't make.... You would have had to see the play in person to appreciate how hard it was.....

OBP calculations do not include reaching base via error.

While I'm sure Maile's tag play was impressive, it's not exactly a statistic that can be meaningfully used to determine who is the best/most productive player. I'm certain that many of the other candidates have had their own standout defensive plays at their respective positions.
