Which schools in the Big 10 and/or Big East are actively recruiting Cody Elliott?

Farris will play at either the college or pro level, but it won't be behind the plate. He will play IMO either second base or the outfield.

I think college scouts seem to think that Farris's speed is being wasted behind the plate, and I agree in the long run. But Boone needs him behind the plate.

Farris will never play at the next level as a pro or in college behind the plate, if Maile so chooses he will be a catcher at whatever level he chooses to play at.....

 

Tell me this oldguy... If Farris is so incapable of playing behind the plate then why is it that the Midland Redskins have acquired him as their #2 catcher. He will also play outfield as well. And i for sure can't wait to check out this Maile kid, because the way that everybody speaks of him you would think that "Pudge" himself had came in from Detroit to catch a highschool season for Cov Cath. Yes, Farris has great speed, and yes he has the ability to play the outfield, but what is the major flaw that he has that negates him from playing the catching position. Everybody has things that they can constantly improve on to make themselves better. Farris does in both the outfield and behind the plate, but i see no room for highschool baseball critics to say that there is no way he will be behind the plate in the future. When you are the caliber athlete that these boys are, they are always going to improve from year to year.

My two cents...this forum is fun and stimulating, and everyone has their bias as they have relationships with either the school or the kid or both; but I hope and expect that we really are just excited to have good baseball and great kids for whom we brag. The poy is a wonderful honor, but not that big a deal in the scheme of things. I just want to see all the boys stay healthy and reach their potential presently and at the next level. Mr. Farris is an outstanding baseball player and will be the pride of NK where ever he goes. Maile is an up and comer, and hopefully will also make NK proud. I am just thankful to have the opportunity to watch kids who not only excel at the game, but appear to work hard at it and make each other better thru competition. Comparing this play to that, or this mechanical fault to that is okay, but we BGP ers should probably leave that to the experts offering the opportunities. I hope Farris breaks every record he can and ends up in the bigs...it will only make the others proud to have played against him and work that much harder to keep up. There are probably several p'soy...and my wish is that they all achieve their goals and full potential. Bottom line, we have several kids in NK who have the tools to move to another level...what a treat for us has beens (or wish had beens). I say poy is great...but let's root for all the kids to shine! Let's pray for a poy post season filled with one-up plays night after night!

You tell me this then, is he a number two player, or is he a full time player? I look at him as being a young man who starts everyday in the outfield or at second where he can use his speed, and won't get killed behind the plate. Great, he can come in and catch a game or two every once in a while, but every day, no way, he doesn't have the size to play full time behind the plate in the majors or in college. Sure he is a tough kid, but a everyday catcher past HS sorry......have spoken to far too many scouts and people who understand that he is playing out of position in HS..for you to change my mind on this one......

Thanks for the clarification on the last post. IMO a recycled catcher usually makes an impression at bag number 3 with quick hands and throws across the diamond. Anyway, my question is what is the ideal size for a catcher?

in this day and age, IMO 6'3 or more.... and a big frame of a body. Catchers take a beating everyday, and when you consider that the better ones catch five to six games a week, it is tough on their body. Listen Corry is a player, one of the best in the area, and he is as close to a sure thing turning pro one day as there is, but with his speed, he isn't going to be playing catcher. Why would a college or pro coach not use his speed to their advantage. Boone needs a catcher, Corry is a top athletic, so he catchers, but he will not play that position on a everyday occasion at the next level.....if so, he will never reach his full potential.

He is not playing "out of position" in high school. He is - by anyone's standards - an excellent high school catcher.

I guess you've already decided that he's stopped growing? Johnny Bench was a pretty good catcher. He was 6' 1" and his playing weight was 208. Given the size of his dad and his older brother, Farris will likely reach this size. And he is as strong as an ox. I don't think he will "get killed behind the plate." I've noticed that he doesn't seem to get "killed" rushing the ball 35 times a game (which is ridiculous, BTW) for BCHS football team.

 

Maybe you should talk to some more scouts. He has already been offered several D1 scholarships as a catcher . I think that being recruited by the 18U Midland Redskins team - as a 16 year old - is also pretty impressive. And I wasn't aware that speed in a catcher was such a terrible thing.

 

Maile is a fine catcher and a terrific player, but so is Farris and your continued attempts to question Farris' catching abilities/future kind of show that you are a bit overly biased towards Maile. Just my opinion, of course. They are both outstanding catchers/players.

I think Farris (Beuller) just as in the movie, is going to play what ever position he wants to play and at what ever time. I envy the kid.... what a skill set. Can you put any other kid at C, IF and OF?. Honestly, I don't know the kid, but Freel #6 comes to mind.

Brad Ausmus 5’11 190; Johnny Estrada 5’11 215; Jason Kendall 6’0 205(and I do believe this guy likes to steal bases, and has batted lead off numerous times throughout his career); Jason Larue 5’11 205; Paul Lo Duca 5’10 185; Yadier Molina 5’11 225; Miguel Olivo 6’0 220; Ivan Rodriguiz 5’9 195 (considered top catcher in the major numerous years), I’m just not seeing your point. These are just a few catchers, of many, that are under your size requirement that have had great success.

WOW! Now this is a statement. There is never a guarantee in professional sports especially in baseball w/all the minor league teams. Some guys get drafted but never make it to the big leagues. I could spend all day listing great baseball players from NKY that never got a sniff in the majors. Great HS players don't always make great pro's. They are just that, great HS players. Out of all the pro sports, IMO, baseball is the toughest to make it all the way.

Pro doesn't have to mean MLB only. Pro to me means drafted and signed to a professional contract.
