I think that there are more reasonable ways to get gasoline prices to come down. Here are a few.

 

1. Make sure that you don't have to make multiple trips to run errands such as grocery buying, going to the bank, dropping of dry cleaning, etc.

 

2. Car pool when it's possible with friends. This is also a great way to enjoy their company while driving to a movie or a restaurant.

 

3. Car pool to work, if that is possible. Take turns driving each week, if your schedules work out so that it is convenient.

 

4. Keep your tires inflated properly and rotated.

 

5. Don't jack - rabbit start and stop your vehicle.

 

These are just a few of the things that I have either heard or read in the last couple of years.

 

Feel free to add to the list, especially if you have a really good suggestion that would help everyone save a few dollars here and there!

 

I don't own an SUV, but sometimes wish I did just for the conveniences that have been pointed out in earlier posts.

I don't have nearly the problem with SUV's as I do the Hummer. I have YET to figure out why anyone needs a Hummer in a city like Louisville. :confused:

Of course that would be the LEAST of everyone's concerns.

Your extremely high rate of consumption drives up the cost for me, who uses very little and doesn't deserve to be punished for others' gluttony. Now I don't know you personally, and am not going to argue with you about how you use your SUV. And that's great that a few people are Good Samaritans and would help someone out of the ditch, but I bet the number of people who do such good deeds in comparison to the number of SUVs in your area is miniscule.

 

According to a Web site for SUV enthusiasts, 40 percent of new SUVs sold are to women. And the number of women buying them is increasing every year. How many chicks go out 4-wheeling?

How any American chooses to dispose of his or her disposable income is none of your buisness, unless they are breaking the law. Are you going to outlaw SUV's? I don't know you personally, but I wonder how deep the pool of hypocrasy runs concerning other products within your own life? This is laughable. Our high quality of life allows us to be gluttonous when using disposable income. Otherwise, what would be the use of having disposable income?

The point of this off topic interjection.

 

Anti-smokers add fuel to their debate by saying that smokers drive up the cost of health insurance for non-smokers. They also say that smokers force non-smokers to work more because smokers take more sick days. Just like Jim laments the increased cost of gasoline due to heavy consumption by SUV owners.

 

Now if you are smoking again wouldn't your stance on SUVs be a bit of a double standard?

Sooooo...the economy and the effect of oil prices on all other goods and services is a trivial matter??? WOW...what and obtuse way of viewing the world you live in.

 

The price of oil directly effects gas prices which in turn indirectly effects the price of everything we buy at the cost of transporting these items to consumer outlets goes up and is then offset by higher prices for all of us.

 

The price of oil also directly effects the cost of many of the products we buy as the byproducts of the refining process are used in the production of plastics and many, many other everyday items.

 

The price of oil directly effects the amount of road paving and repairs that our tax dollars pay for every year. Asphalt is another byproduct of the refining process and as the price goes up, our tax dollars are able to buy less. This means fewer road improvements which means more wear and tear on our vehicles...especially tires.

 

Hey...the price of oil also effects the cost of those tires, but I don't know why I worry about such a trivial matter...

 

 

I'm sorry but a dollar difference in price per gallon isn't something I'm going to get worked up about. If they were charging $5 a gallon then maybe it would be an issue to me, but as of now it's just not something I worry about.

It goes farther than a few trees and owls. You are talking of destroying a Nature area and also disturbing the livelihood of the people that live there.
