Wanna see gas prices go down?

Featured Replies

GM is schedule to come out with a hybrid Yukon Denali in 2008.

IMO, these vehicle don't deserve the right to be called 'hybrid'. Saving 3 miles to the gallon compared to the standard Yukon isn't much. There's no reason with all the technology available that they can't make SUVs that get 25+ mpg and still have the power and torque to tow trailers and such.

This thread is a joke.

We own an SUV and use 4-wheel drive quite often.

Also for the record I could care less if my owning an SUV affects your gas prices. If that's what consumers want, they have every right to own one. If it makes gas prices go up, I won't loss any sleep over it.

You're the exception, not the rule.

Most SUV drivers live in cookie-cutter suburbs burning up $100 tanks of gas daily running errands like getting groceries and picking up children. All of that could be accomplished with a Volvo station wagon that's far more gas efficient (and safer!!!!) than any SUV. It's just a vanity thing with most people.

How do you know what MOST SUV owners are like? I see we're making sweeping generalizations...

SUVs are much safer for those that own them. I know if I'm in an accident I would much rather be in an SUV than a small car. The chances of me getting hurt are much slimmer.

Here's an out-of-the-box way of making it happen:

Write your Senators and Congressmen and demand that a law be passed stipulating all SUVs are required to be painted brown and come equipped with wood paneling on the sides, just like '70s-era station wagons. That's all SUVs are anyway is glorified station wagons — I'd bet 90 percent of the SUVs in the US are used as nothing more than a child transport, and that no 4WD feature is ever engaged on them.

Do us a favor, SUV owners. Check your vanity and trade out that gas-hog for something way more practical, like a mini-van or a station wagon.

Stew on this Jimbo!

I like to drive my 15 mpg SUV to go to the end of my drive to get my newspaper.

Sometimes I drive my 15 mpg SUV to the store instead of my 2 seater sports car just to pick up a pack of gum. And when I'm in the store, I leave it running just because I can and the fact that I just don't care.

Global warming makes me smile and gives me a warm feeling that is hard to describe.

I own stock in 2 MAJOR oil companies and I smile everytime I see the price increase at the pump. I love the fact that there are people driving SUV's to pick up their kids and run errands and such. Bless them!!!!

P.S. You know I love you JS. :D;)

Great stuff guys. I thought I was the only idiot here driving an SUV and making the rest of the driving world miserable because of my gluttony

I'm not saying I disagree with you, as it is a matter of supply and demand and if they want to buy one they can. But it is a terribly immature or at the very least meanspirited thing to say that you have no care that the consequences of your actions may affect others negatively. I hope that doesn't extend to other areas of your life.

Absolutely not. My gluttony is the stuff of legends.

See you at the pumps.:D

I'm sorry, but the price of gas is just as expensive for me as it is for everyone else. I don't need someone telling me that what I'm driving is wrong. I find it no worse than trying to guilt trip someone into their beliefs. Some people try to act like they have all the answers, when in reality they don't.

I just find it comical that people act like gas prices are a big deal. It's a trivial matter that isn't worth my time worrying about. I just don't care that someone thinks me driving an SUV affects them because it doesn't.

I somewhat remember a report that said those huge vehicles that so many are buying has a lot to do with the price of gas and if fifty percent of them would switch to a smaller ride the price of gas would go down.

The report was on some A.M. station I sometime listen to I think it might have been out of Boston.

I'm thinking of tradin' my 1994 Ford Explorer for a Geo. I heard you drive all week on a tank of gas in those cars and still have a half a tank. If it is like my '83 Suburu I had it'll be worth it.

I don't think people should be told what they should or are allowed to drive either; nontheless, if you don't need to drive an SUV and are interested in helping decrease our country's dependance on oil and help reduce the price, I see no reason why some people might decide to get rid of their SUVs. Just totally and mean totally opposed to any legislation being adopted that would prevent people from making their own choice however. There is too much govt intrusion into our lives as it is, let's not make it worse. And if not enough people voluntarily give up their SUVs and the price stays high, well that's just a price that people will have to pay to live in a country that still occassionally allows freedom of choice.

Jim, I think you hit a nerve when you stated that most people only drive SUVs for vanity reasons and that people should give them up to help you out at the pump. Most people I know drive SUVs for reasons other than vanity reasons. Most people consider them extremely practical vehicles. And the idea that they should involuntarily give them up just because you don't like paying the high gas price is a bit out of touch.

What does the type of vehicle drive have to do with the price of gas? Nothing!!

What does the type of vehicle drive have to do with the price of gas? Nothing!!

You cannot seriously believe that. It's simple supply and demand. The scarcer the resource/product, the higher the price is because of the rarity. Think of a rare car. If there are 45 of that car, it's worth a lot. If 20 of them are destroyed leaving 25, it's worth even more. When you have cars that get terrible gas mileage and have huge tanks, they consume more fuel rapidly, dwindling the supply and increasing the need. That drives prices upward. I'm not going to get involved any further on whether you should or should not drive an SUV, but supply and demand dictates that the large amound of SUVs driven does drive prices up.

Let's not just let this off at SUV's there are some major trucks out there that suck the gas too.

^I believe that the gas companies don't really need a reason to raise prices, they do it because they want to. Enough said.
