Write your Senators and Congressmen and demand that a law be passed stipulating all SUVs are required to be painted brown and come equipped with wood paneling on the sides, just like '70s-era station wagons. That's all SUVs are anyway is glorified station wagons — I'd bet 90 percent of the SUVs in the US are used as nothing more than a child transport, and that no 4WD feature is ever engaged on them.

 

Do us a favor, SUV owners. Check your vanity and trade out that gas-hog for something way more practical, like a mini-van or a station wagon.

Heres another out of the box way to make gas prices go down. Why don't we all just buy horses and ride them ? Or we could all ride bikes or just walk.

Your extremely high rate of consumption drives up the cost for me, who uses very little and doesn't deserve to be punished for others' gluttony. Now I don't know you personally, and am not going to argue with you about how you use your SUV. And that's great that a few people are Good Samaritans and would help someone out of the ditch, but I bet the number of people who do such good deeds in comparison to the number of SUVs in your area is miniscule.

And the 40 percent number I'm sure doesn't cover husbands who buy an SUV strictly for their soccer-mom wives.

It's not even about four wheeling for me. I never go four wheeling, I think it's dumb, it ruins vehicles.

 

I don't live in a large city, I don't have the liberty of traveling flat roads all day.I live in eastern Kentucky where the miles of back roads out number the miles of highway by a lot. When it snows here a lot of those back roads that I have to travel arent attended to by our county road crew. Having 4 wheel drive makes it a lot safer to travel when the roads are in those conditions. My driveway is around 3 quarters of a mile long and most of it is straight up hill. In the winter, it is very necessary for me to own a vehicle that is a four wheel drive. Even in the other seasons I use 4 wheel drive to get up my driveway not because I have to but because it is much easier on my tires.

You're the exception, not the rule.

 

Most SUV drivers live in cookie-cutter suburbs burning up $100 tanks of gas daily running errands like getting groceries and picking up children. All of that could be accomplished with a Volvo station wagon that's far more gas efficient (and safer!!!!) than any SUV. It's just a vanity thing with most people.

Don't you need to get the politicians to park their SUV's and high-end gas guzzling cars first?

How about for every SUV driver out there have another person buy a hybrid? That will equal out the gas guzzling SUV's out there.

 

That wouldn't be very fair now would it?

 

How about instead of pointing fingers at the SUV owners why don't we mandate carpooling. How about going back to gas rationing stamps?

 

Myself I drive one of those gas guzzling SUV's and i would not have anything else. I don't complain about gas prices while I drive over 2000 miles per month for work. I can comfortably haul myself, my wife and all 3 of my children. I can haul all of my work stuff and golf clubs and can hook to a trailer and pull it anywhere I want. Talk about a multi purpose vehicle. If I didn't own this then I would have to have a car to haul my kids and a truck to haul trailers and my work stuff.

 

How about mandating one car per person and that will stop people from having multiple cars and using more gas? How about more people using the bus or other forms of mass transit?

 

I am not trying to start a fight I am just throwing out many more sides to the gas argument.

My cousin told me once that his truck that he drives to work gets 7 miles per gallon. Costs him a gallon of gas to go to work and a gallon of gas to come home from work.

 

As long as we as a country continue to buy and drive these type of vehicles, we don't have a problem with high gas costs in this country.

You fix me another vehicle that can carry my (almost) 5 children, all their gear, groceries, etc. AND have leg and head room for my 6'8" husband and I'll purchase it. Right now I drive my Yukon XL gas guzzler out of pure necessity. We have rented a myriad of minivans while on vacation and my husband is either banging his knees on the sides of the steering wheel or his head is hitting the roof. Not to mention I cannot fit enough groceries in the paltry little trunk to fill up my supersize family. I hear what you are saying Jim, but you cannot paint all us "soccer moms" and baseball moms and what else with the same brush.
