He shouldn't be up there! Yes he won a championship but it was his first year. If Coach G wins it his first year does he go up automatically? Tubby was good but not that good.

I agree, and as I said, if he doesn't get up there, he will be in the company with Eddie Sutton.

I think Tubby should be there. I would be of the opinion that any coach who wins a title at UK should be there.

 

One exception would be that if a coach came into a situation like Tubby did, where he won a title with the team that was left to him, and then proceeded to post a terrible record during the rest of his tenure...and by terrible, I mean hovering around .500 or even worse.

 

Tubby won a title, had a good overall record, and had several noteworthy accomplishments (Undefeated SEC run, back-to-back #1 overall seeds, numerous SEC season and tourny titles, etc.). His record and those accomplishments are more than enough to warrant him in the rafters, IMO.

Wow I knew once I seen this thread we would have another nice little Tubby argument going both ways....

 

Now do I feel that he should and will be put in the rafters someday, yes I do. However I dont think it will be for a LONG TIME, when the hate of Tubby by some people cool down...The reasons I believe he should be is because he won us a title, continued the dominance of the SEC for us in 8 out of the 10 years here. He got us are first undefeated SEC season, and made the tournament every year, and NEVER lost in the 1st round in the tournament. A couple of #1 overall seeds in the tournament, and few elite 8 appearneces that got us very close to making the final four. Not to mention the most important thing is the way he handled himself when he was here as the coach of UK. He did everything with class and THE RIGHT WAY, we knew that no matter how much people might disagree with him on some things, that everybody would agree on that he was a great representive for our school during his time here. Also he also stepped aside for the good of the program, when he knew that no matter what happened, he would not wanted. So it would be better for him and the team to get a fresh start. Some of you say he shouldn't be because he turned his back, but IMO he did it to also help out the program. I mean if he was just going to run, and not care abour the program he would have put down the program, because he has many chances to do that with questions from reporters, but he never has and never will. So yes Tubby should be in the rafters one day, but it just wont be for a long time, and he is probably out of coaching...

I think history will be kind Tubby Smith.

 

When looking at Smith's numbers compared to the rest of UK's history, he is just about on par with most others (in regards to how many years he was there, winning %, titles, etc.). I know many portray the program as on the verge of going under and dropping to NAIA, but that is far from the case.

 

It may take a little time before the dust settles and everyone is caught up in the moment right now, but his name will be in the rafters.

This is a dumb discussion IMO I mean I didn't think he was the greatest coach ever but the man won a National Championship and ran the table in the SEC and finished with a very solid record. So I might not be the biggest Tubby fan ever (not a basher neither) but this answer is a no brainer yes.

Without question should Tubby be retired to the rafters. Tubby left on his own accord, to pursue other options in his career and in his life. Sure, his tenure at UK was like a rollercoaster ride, but he also won a NCAA title and 5 SEC tournament crowns during his 10 years at UK. I am not even a fan of Tubby, but as a fan of UK basketball, he accomplished too much throughout his career to not be retired to the rafters one day.
