The one key factor to me is at least Tubby walked away when he realized he couldn't get the job done , head held high and he and his wife never bashed UK for the off court discord the fans were giving out. He walked away with class. Pitino on the other hand not only came back to UK's arch rival he also (according to reports) let it be publicly known that he advised Billy D. not to take the UK job. Now who has more respect for the program Tubby or Pitino? If I had my choice I'd say take down Pitino and put up Tubby or if Pitino is going to be left up, then he done no more to help the program than Tubby did so put Tubby up or don't put either of them up. You obviously don't know the game of basketball and don't realize exactly what Rick Pitino did for the University of Kentucky...straight up he went to 3 Final Fours and two championship appearances with one title...Tubby came in with and inherited the best team in America and won a title...that's about all.

Pitino definitely deserves to be up there, but so does Tubby IMO....Any coach that wins a title deserves to be IMO....Another thing working for Tubby is that Joe B. is up there, no way he should be and not Tubby.

Pitino is up there, and rightfully so. His name should NEVER come down. Tubby's belongs up there as well, but while I love Tubby, ... Pitino rebuilt UK basketball from the ashes. Even if he didn't win a title, I would put him up there.

April 12, 200719 yr Yes, he won a national championship. For that alone he deserves it. But if you don't think he deserves it on that alone, he won 5 SEC titles, 5 SEC tournament titles, went undefeated in the conference and conference tournament, won over 250 games...add that to his community service, millions of dollars raised for charities, puts him WAY over the top. He DESERVES it. Preach on! Preach On! AMEN

You base the decision on the entire career, not just a mediocre couple of seasons towards the end. I am NOT saying that Rupp' name isn't the first one that comes to mind when you think of UK basketball.

Tubby didn't do as much for UK as Pitino but he deserves credit for the 1998 Title. That coupled with his record warrants his name going up in the rafters. How many coaches have won an NCAA Title period? Not very many. Also to say that he inherited the best team in America that year is rubbish. Arizona was the defending champ and returned almost their entire team, North Carolina, Kansas and Duke (you should remember that one for sure) were all also more highly regarded than the Wildcats that year. UK had to replace Anthony Epps, Ron Mercer, Derek Anderson and Jared Prickett from the '97 runners-up. Jeff Sheppard and Heshimu Evans were the only signifigant additions to the 1998 team. Besides it takes more than just having great players to win a Title. Otherwise Rick Barnes, Dale Brown and Bobby Cremins among others would have had one.
April 12, 200719 yr The arguers will say he won us #7 but then lost our program afterwards. I say the fact that he won #7, is considered one of the best coaches in college ball, statistically was very good(though not by UK fan standards), and was really an good roll model and active in the community. That T. Smith should get that honor.

He started that Tubby's Treehouse, or something like that, to help young kids around the state. If im not mistaken they gave away free computers as well to kids. He is a VERY generous man.
April 12, 200719 yr Joe B. Hall coached UK to three final fours, Tubby went to one. Joe B. Hall had a national championship and a runner up and won the NIT when it was a very competitive tournament. Tubby won the single championship. And when it came to recruiting Joe B. was light years ahead of Tubby as well. Tubby Smith, other than Eddie Sutton, was the least successful coach of the modern era of UK men's basketball. What Pitino left him was a national championship caliber team, what Tubby left for Billy Clyde is a shadow of that type of team.
