Well Habib called the double play. What a VERY frustrating loss and a game the Reds should have won.

 

Hopefully Lohse can come out tomorrow and pitch well and the Reds can even up this series.

I absolutely hate the unwritten rule that you must play for the win on the road. When I'm down a run in the last inning, I would bunt everytime to get the tying run into scoring postion. :irked:

You get the lead runner on. You pinch hit a guy who has great plate awareness and can handle the bat, but is also a DP threat, and you let him hit away?

You get the lead runner over to second, with two opportunites for a single to tie the game.

Especially when Hamilton has base stealing speed. With as wild as the pitcher was he could have moved over safely on a ball.

Well lets think about that last inning... Hamilton walks, Hatte bunts him over to second, Valentin singles to center(that makes it first and third with one out) then BP flies out to the warning track and Hamilton crosses the plate on a sac fly to tie it with 2 outs and a runner possibly in scoring position depending on where the throw from left went. Frustrating.

 

By the way did anyone else almost laugh out loud listening to Thom Brennamen and Chris Welsch? Chris Welsch would say something and Thom would pretty much say "well the reason why they do that is..." lol. The one that stands out in my mind was when they are talking about the slow roller that gave the Dbacks their first run and Welsch commented on how "some people in baseball just want their guy to go up there swingin for the fences and don't care if he makes contact" Brennamen replies "well those are the kind of people in the game 40 years and never get a ring":lol: :lol:

By the way if the Reds hitters would have been a little more patient while Davis was in the game they would have walked at least 3 more times...

Well, since I'm sitting here struggling this morning since I stayed up until 12:35 last night watching every pitch, I think I'll just vent a bit, so here are my sleep deprived observations.

1. Ryan Freel looks clueless currently. Bronson Arroyo looked better at the plate last night than did our table setter. I have found that when Mr. Freel feels he gets hosed on a ball/strike call, he can't "play the next play". Grow up Ryan, there's another pitch on it's way.

2. I thoroughly enjoy watching Brandon Phillips play baseball. Terrific defensively, but gives 100% out of the box and beats out a squibber for a single. Great attitude.

3. Arroyo aka "the wiffle ball pitcher" falls in love with breaking stuff against mediocre hitters. Not to take anything away from the performance last night, he was great, but it just seems that he needs to throw a "straight one" to some of those guys and let us play D behind him.

4. I've been thoroughly impressed with our new shortstop and I'm thankful that I don't have to look at some funky tattoo on his neck at every plate appearance.

5. David Ross needs to sit some more.

6. Jerry Narron should have bunted Hatteberg to move the runner over in a game where we obviously weren't lighting up the scoreboard. If he had, Valentin's single would have tied the game.

7. I really like Jeff Conine.

8. I like our starters minus Milton of course.

9. George Grande is not good. The poofy haired one however is good. He made it more bearable to listen to Welsh (very little)

It doesn't change the fact that he'll hit maybe 12-16 all year and if he is your "best hitter" than you are in trouble.

 

Doug Davis befuddling the Reds is nothing new -- just like Arroyo getting no run support shouldn't surprise anyone.

Yep, it's easy to second guess someone, BUT in Narron's case it has become the way he manages a lot of the time. He's not perfect, but you think he would learn from some of his previous miscues.

 

I thought about it last year, if the Reds don't show improvement this year, not so much the playoffs, but more improvement. I wouldn't be shocked to see the Reds move on and get someone else.
