There may be a few players at JBS that were held back, might be the age of a normal senior, but may not be in the senior class, just throwing this out there. Go JBS!!

I hope no one has been offended by this thread. I was simply curious due to a highly publicized event that occured in a town near where I live and did not know how often this was done. From the amount of posts it seems that people are passionate on both sides of the picture. In the end it is into your own heart you must look as far as why was my child held back. It would be hard to justify to myself if it was purely for an atheletic advantage.I raised my children to play fair even if it means defeat. That even in defeat you learn. I guess that greed in this day and age of the million dollar contracts has permeated into the deepest roots of sports and corrupted even our children.

They have been corrupted for a long time then, because it's been happening since 1974 for sure!!! By the way all of U.K.'S freshman ,but one are holdback's, guess all you holdback hater's will have to find someone else to cheer for! It's been going on for year's on a major scale nationwide so it can't be that bad a deal or the lawmaker's would have stopped it in a thirty year period I'm sure!!!!!! I guess all you guy's that object, could quit work, if you do work, and go to frankfort and start lobbying!!!

I'm a Duke fan so I guess I'll use this opportunity to say that maybe UK should try to get more kids who aren't holdbacks and maybe they can compete at the level their fans are accustomed to. Doesn't look like the holdbacks helped you guys out so much.

If you took some of the holdbacks and moved them up to their rightful class, they would not be considered elites in that particular class. IE, an average soph now that has been heldback, would be a less than average junior if you put them with their rightful age class had they not been held back a year. In some cases, it works out, in others the advantage is only temporary as the other players pass them up as they mature.

All three of my children have "late" birthdays as do I. My birthday is the end of Oct. I was 17 at graduation. In a way it was nice because I had an extra year after high school to figgure out what I wanted to do with my life. In the down side I was one of the youngest in my class and in some ways not as mature as my classmates. My children (2 with early to mid Oct. and 1 with a mid Dec. birthdays) all started school late. I believe that they are better prepared emotionally that I was. My intention was never to gain an atheletic edge with them but it certainly didnt hurt. My oldest was a three year starter in football. My middle son played freshman football as an eighth grader. Now my daughter is on Lloyds softball team as a 7th grader. (doubt she will see the field much but she did make the team) Kids are faced with a lot of tough decisions today and I'm glad mine have that extra year of emotional development to help them. After my oldest sons senior football season was over he discovered that technically he had a year of varsity elligability left. He asked me if he could repeat his senior year! I told him that if he "tanked" his grades for that I would kill him and there would not be a piece big enough to put a uniform on!

Holding kids back before Kindergarten is one thing but holdign them back as 7th graders especially when they are good students is clearly stating you want an athletic advantage for your son or daughter. If I even thought of doing that to my 6th grade son who has an early April birthday and a younger kid in his grade, he would tell me to hit he highway. He would miss his friends and wouldnt want to be bored with the same things he learned this year.

 

 

That's why parents are supposed to make important decisions.

 

Who leaves it up to their kids to make decisions that could affect the rest of their lives?

This topic has come up so many times, but again - here is my take:

 

Scott County's Rodney Haddix enrolled at St. John's school in Georgetown where he took a placement test. The test showed that he belonged in the 8th again - so that's what he did. However, since he had already passed the 8th grade at Scott Co. Middle - the rule was in place. In his case he would have been better off to purposfully (sp?) fail the 8th grade at SCMS so he could have repeated it. What a great rule - sarchasm...

 

BTW - he has earned a 3.0 or better since repeating the 8th grade when he was no where near that before. He's the poster child for why the rule isn't in the best interests of the individual student athlete.

AGAIN - IMO he was in the wrong and should not be allowed to play this year, but his situation causes me to question the rule itself...

Don't know a thing about Shelby Valley but I will be rooting for them very hard.

 

 

You know all this bickering back and forth really isnt going any where. I think that the post was to see what kids are playing now that are actually older than the grades they are playing in. as for the Qoute above, I thought that you are from the 16th region. IMO you are one of the people that make the 16th region get looked down upon by allot of other regions. Why can we all not just back what ever team comes out of the region that we are from and if we do not want to back them dont start talking bad about them because they are representing all of the 16th region and by you talking bad about the team representing us you are helping out the cause of the 16th region looking bad. I for one will always back what ever team comes out of the 16th region no matter how old or young there team is.

^ Because I can support whatever team/teams that I wish to support. Just like any other person on this site. And if I choose not to support Elliott County it has nothing to do with holdbacks.

Unless all five of Elliot County's players are holdbacks, then they do not have more holdbacks than Shelby Valley has.

 

I know that 4 and possibly 5 of Shelby Valley's kids are holdbacks, and I say kudos to their parents for giving them a better chance to succeed in the classroom and in sports.

Not me, never lost a game to them in high school and I see Rocky and talk to him all of the time. I think they are a good team, hope they lose in the first round of state though. Tired of people over hyping them. They had the easiest run to the state tournament of any team in the region. First Boyd County, a team they had already beat. Then a weak and injured Russell team and last a team from Blazer they had already beat. So these people on here going on about what a tough run they had was not right, the facts show that. Don't know a thing about Shelby Valley but I will be rooting for them very hard.

 

I was going to not post on this thread again, but the above statement indicates your knowledge of the 16th Region. It was the opinion of vitually everyone that the Boyd-Elliott game was the toughest first rounder and that it was the toughest draw of the tournament. That statement alone lets me know it is a waste of time to further discuss the matter with you. Your dislike of Elliott County clouds your judgment to the point you make such a ridiculous comment.

No problem, just stating the obvious. They were playing three teams they had already played, beaten two of them already and Russell was far from up to full speed. My judgement is fine, thanks for the concern though.

The KHSAA has addressed this issue by mandating a rule concerning it. I'm sure if the KHSAA has thought that a great advantage was being gained they would have disallowed it. Except for the Mercer County deal this past football season, they seem to be pretty concerned with advantages and disadvantages.
