I went to visit a family member and there son had a television with cable in their room. We put the kids to bed and television off. Later on in the middle of the night, I heard the television on so I stuck my head into the room and found they were watching South Park.

 

I asked my son why he was watching it and he indicated from his 8-year old mind, he was flipping the channels and came upon this cartoon.

 

HB20 read the whole thread. I don't give the parents a free hand here. They get most of the blame but the producers of the show don't get a free ride on it either.

Freedom of speech doesn't apply to a website that requires a paid membership...

So as I said, we have conditional freedom of speech in this country NOT freedom of speech.

We have a nine year old boy and we have told him "its a bad cartoon like the Sunday nite ones stay away". Now he is human and if he sees it on or staying at a friend's home and watches, oh well.

The rules of the site as dictated by it's owner, limits the speech on a web forum, not the government. What you are suggesting is governmental control. Two different things.

Someone suggested for me to "turn the channel". Again I was scanning I'm a Male, I knew about the show and wanted to see how much it would go with the topic. Again look at my question. The network is Comedy Central and there is some nice shows on there. What about the men who turned gay? How can they do that? Garbage, My opinion. If you think its OK, thats fine. Every knee will bow, every tongue will confess. The creators of the show....Oh well Matthew 7:1...If I don't speak out I'm not doing my job folks. And Monday I will contact Comedy Central and thats my right.

 

I don't suggest you turn the channel at all. I suggest you go to one of the many online sites that features the episodes (the creators allow this), and watch every single one of them, from begining to end. And then go out and rent the movie.

 

South Park goes as far as they do so they can pull back at the end, usually, with a message that's actually very thoughtful and generally good.

OK, so we either get rid of shows like South Park or censor them more than they are. Then we further censor music. The next step is literature, and I don't mean Playboy and Hustler. Classic books like Catcher in the Rye present "adult situations" and language. While I whole-heartedly commend your efforts in education LBBC I just don't see where this slippery slope would stop.

 

I think we need to give out a "parental license"--parents should have to prove they can-and will-be half-way decent role models for children.

Nope, you are wrong, read MY POSTS and see what I am suggesting.

I understand and agree with you. I have said that the parents should get most of the blame.

 

But I don't think that gives companies free reign to put on whatever they want. They should not take the mindset, we are not raising the children so we don't have any ethical obligations on what we put on television.

 

As parts of our society, I believe each of us have ethical obligations.

 

Some are great (time to brownnose a little) and worrisome about what they put in the front of youths, like guru on BGP and what he allows to be discussed on here and what is not. Some like Larry Flynt or Hugh Hefner don't care what they put in front of youth as long as it makes money.

 

I wish that any censoring would be done by the two (talking about the creators here) who would say, that is not what we want our contributions to society to be about. To be about crude vulgar humor with course language that doesn't give the youth that watches this show a good role model.

 

I guess I am an idealists that says you can make enough money and still provide a high quality program that is not vulgar and crude.

 

I think of Everybody Loves Raymond, I think All in the Family that raised major issues but didn't sink to the level of South Park.

I suppose you've also contacted NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS and every other cable channel to report the large amount of violence and sexual encounters portrayed on their programs, in primetime no less.

I'm sorry if my logic is flawed. I did read all of your posts (several times) and would concede if the post you quoted was the only post you made. However, in this post...

I am SICK AND TIRED OF THE FREE SPEECH ARGUMENT. We limit free speech all the time in this country. BGP limits our free speech and I don't see any picketing of guru's house. You can't make threats on the Presidents' lives without a visit from the Secret Service and possible charges for it. Students are suspended from school for language and making comments about teachers. You can't say certain words on public television.

 

We limit free speech in this country ALL THE TIME.

All of the examples given outside of BGP are controlled by governmental agencies. The word let is a big word in this post. Let infers control. Control by who? Your examples would indicate the government.

Again, both examples given are controlled by governmental agencies. (IRS and BOE.) Again, you are justifying further control of free speech by using CONDITIONAL governmental controls already in existence.

Therefore, given the posts prior to the one you quoted, I can only conclude that if you don't get your wish, you'd be in favor of the government doing it for you.

I watch South Park regularly.

 

The reason that it continues to air is because there is an audience for it, no more or less.
