This is getting pretty ridiculous. YOU answered yourself in your own argument. If the parents don't raise their kid right, then they watch adult shows when they shouldn't. Or let me rephrase my, young adult to adult shows. Go check out the T.V. times of South Park and let me know when it's on and what shows are aired around it. You see any shows aimed for kids? The Sarah Silverman show? I think not. They don't even air the South Park Movie unless it is after 1 a.m. I'm not going to argue that South Park/bad language is appropriate for everyone, because it's not. Just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it's aimed for kids.

 

Although I can tell you one thing, when I go home and I happen to watch South Park there and my little brother (13) is in the room, he doesn't even stay and watch because it doesn't interest him. That goes for the other 4 friends I've seen him hang out with.

 

You've already answered yourself in your argument. If their parenting isn't there, then how on God's green earth can you blame T.V. show?? Because if you want to remove any bad language or adult content just in case a kid hasn't had good parenting, then you've got a LOT bigger fight on your hand than South Park, so good luck.

 

And in regards to your ridiculous last paragraph, I've listened to plenty of rap and watched plenty of South Park and other movies for a good amount of time and I'm still 20 years old, but you won't catch me treating a girl like you claim somebody is going to do. Hmmmm why's that? Because I have parents that raised me well and I'm not that type of person.

Your post boils down to the bolded. I have chosen to deal with those kids every single day. My choice because someone needs to have a positive effect on them when their parents and society do not.

 

Your dealing in an ideal world and I am telling you the reality of what is happening with too many of our youth don't have parents as you had.

 

Earlier in the school year, I had 9 kids with not a single father involved in their lives. Presently, I have a handful of kids that NEITHER parent is involved in their lives.

 

As a society are we supposed to just throw away these kids because their parents don't care? Or would it be better that we have a society that teaches/supports those who don't have anyone to teach/support?

The thing that bothers me about people who criticize South Park is how they cannot get past the language. This show regularly makes PROFOUND statements about our own society. I think we need people to watch this show more often. It isn't simply just cussing and making fun of people. There are messages in these shows that would do young kids good to hear. Is this show for everyone? No. I am not speaking of anyone on here, but I feel that the people who cannot see past the language and shut out the show completely to criticize are part of the problem in society that the show makes fun of. Thus why they don't enjoy it. It kind of reminds me of Borat in that regard. If you couldn't find the humor in Borat or see the overall message of the movie, then you probably should have been in it.

Reminds me of the comment I read along time ago in talking about comedians. It was Bill Cosby or someone along those lines who commented that he didn't need to cuss and use vulgar language to grab the audience's attention and make them laugh.

 

So I hold expectations for my children and students that they refrain from vulgar humor and cussing and I am the problem in society? Are you kidding me? I put up with the students thinking they can cuss me out and call me every name in the book and because I am offended by it, I am part of the problem in society? I hold my students to the expectations that they should treat everyone with respect contrary to what they see on television, watch in movies or hear in music and I am part of the problem with society?

I never said anything about you and your students relationships, that has nothing to do with what I said. Students who cuss and yell at you have issues far worse than watching South Park. If you think South Park can take a normal well behaved young person and turn them into a teacher cussing punk then you are mistaken. I have been watching South Park since it started and I have never once done such a thing. Kids already have those types of personalities/attitudes before they watch television and movies and it comes from their upbringing, social/economic factors among other things. IMO, T.V., movies, video games etc. should not be used as the scapegoat to deal with the problems of our youth. It's easier, but it's not the answer.

You can't make threats on the Presidents' lives without a visit from the Secret Service and possible charges for it. Students are suspended from school for language and making comments about teachers. You can't say certain words on public television.

You wouldn't have South Park success. 3 of the 4 mainstay adult cartoons are low brow.

No you aren't, but neither is TV. I have a kid in my room that watched South Park as a 3rd grader. He was fine the entire year. Very few problems. Clearly he wasn't old enough to watch it. As a 4th grader his Dad went to jail for non-payment of child support. His mom told him his Dad no longer wanted to see him or talk to him. Guess which made him difficult? It wasn't the cartoon that did the damage.

Never said it could and yes it is about my students or you haven't been reading all of my posts. A student used the big bomb in cuss words several times this morning. His reasoning is that word is a common daily word. He said and I paraphrase quote, "I hear it all the time on television. If they can use it on tv, why can't I use it." Honest debate that I had this morning that led me to post as I am in this thread.

 

I am just telling you the reality. DAILY, if not, HOURLY I have to address their language or them singing lyrics of rap music. They are inticed into thinking that this is the way to live since they have NO OTHER POSITIVE ROLE MODELS in most of their homes.

You brought religion up and we have another thread that says a pastor cannot stand up in the pulpit and politically take the stance of supporting a candidate. Limit of freedom of speech.

 

Also, if you stood up in your classroom and used the language that is used on South Park, do you get to keep your job? If not, you don't have complete freedom of speech.

 

We have CONDITIONAL freedom of speech in this country.

I think it's like Ron White said in describing the time he got arrested: "I had the RIGHT to remain silent, I just did not have the a-bil-i-ty!

 

Everyone has the RIGHT to free speech. Some people just don't have the a-bil-i-ty to use it wisely.

What is offensive, crude and improper to you may not be to me. Why does the use of a certain word bother you? After all, it is a word that is synonymous with a plethora of other words that are acceptable to say. Why is it that I can turn on NBC in primetime and watch someone be shot, murdered or otherwise bludgeoned to death, but if I want to turn on cable at ten and watch something with "cuss words" in it I'm in the wrong?

 

Obscenity is an indefinable word. It depends on who you ask. Why should something that I want to watch, or something someone wants to create, be restricted because some people disagree with it. Sure, speech has been restricted in this country and I don’t agree with the lot of the rulings, but that is a cop out. Most free speech regulation has come in the form of restricting threatening statements or subversion during a time of war. The Court has been mixed on what constitutes “dirty words” and obscenity. In fact the precedent ruling on obscenity, which is still good law, is probably the most ambiguous thing I have ever read.

 

In addition, when do we draw the line at what can’t and can be restricted. How long before South Park gets taken off the air do we decide that I can’t practice a certain religion because it is offensive, or I can’t run for office on certain platforms because they offend, or are dangerous? I would prefer to have my speech protected.

 

As far as the kids in your class who watch it, they will either learn a great deal from it, or they will do with it what they do with everything else in their life and fade into oblivion. I sincerely doubt that when any one of our parents told us we couldn’t watch, read, or do something we didn’t still try and do it. I saw my share of vile material at a young age, which I was 100% forbidden from, yet I realized why it was forbidden and learned from it. Somehow I became a functioning member of society.
