I'm talking recent history - last two or three seasons - Coach L has lost players due to injuries and others because they were quitters (they played they quit - they played - they quit). He's lost coaches due to differences in strategy. And yet he still manages to beat Holmes. And based on this thread and others, it seems like everyone says Holmes is more talented.

You cannot single out one kid. Period.

 

I really did not want to do that but it was one kid infact that was thirty minutes late to meet the team to travel to the district championship game and was being left behind as bus was pulling away only to come running up and the bus had to stop to let him board. So you tell me, with a game of this magnitude, who let who down? The team let one player down (waiting for thirty minutes past arrival time to leave) or 1 player let his teammates down because he could not follow the rules? If your going to be a team spokes person and give quotes to newspapers and be the face of team then lead by example. Now I'll say this, if there was an emergency reason for his being late, I believe the coaches have cell phones, and would have understood if there was a good reason to be late and it probably would not have cost him his starting position. If he can't follow the rules now in high school what makes you think that next year he can keep up with the demands of a Division 1 football program where I'm sure the demands are even greater. I don't imagine that Cov. Cath had any players show up late. It all comes down to self discipline and the Bulldogs as a whole don't seem to have it, but on this very important night all of them but one showed up on time.

Yeah, Henley can't coach. Just a few weeks ago, he took a freshman/JV squad and nearly beat Holy Cross and Cov Cath in successive weeks.

People can talk about talent and what not, but CCH is loaded with players as well. Were they not the preseason #1 team this year?

Henley is an outstanding coach...he has keep the ship afloat in mighty tough waters this year. Essentially, GSK.

They've been there 3 years with an addition here or there to the core of Rice, Hill and Duran and yet they still can't beat a Cov Cath team that virtually the entire team was playing JV last year. EXECUTION down the stretch. Too much one on one and not enough TEAM ball that Cov. Cath. excelles in. They have enough talent ot beat 95% of teams they play despite this problem. They are committing the same mistakes they were making two years ago and for whatever reason refuse to or just can't grasp what it takes to be team players to beat the other 5%(really good teams). I hope they figure it out this week or it will be too late forever for this bunch of Bulldogs.

So, playing in PARK HILLS caused them to make poor decisions?

And that indeed is really a shame in playing a team sport...... I just wonder if Hills problem on the floor last night (lack of scoring) had anything to do with all the problems on and off the floor. From what I understand Austin is a great kid, and I just wonder if all this is just getting to him, meaning all the problems, time after time after time.....

 

Austin from what I hear is the best kid on that team as far as respectfull, hard working, polite and just a great kid. I have heard this from a very reliable source too. I hate to get down on a high school kid but if this stuff continues with DJ in college he will be put on RedShirt Defense and they will run student body left and right directed toward him until he packs up and comes home. Time to step up and act like a senior and take one of the most talented teams in NKY in quite some time down to RuppArena. We need strong representation from up here and I think Holmes has the best talent. They simply self destruct and its too bad for Austin Hill who would do anything for a state title I am sure.

Talent, in my mind, is shooting, defense, and basketball IQ. With this said, I think that CCH has more talent. Now if this was a track meet and the competition was high jump than Holmes would definitely have more talent. Yes we all know that Holmes is more athletic than CCH but, being athletic does not always translate into talent. The name of the game is who can put the ball in the hoop more than the other team not who can jump the highest or who is the fastest team.

Yeah, I think I may have a clue what talent looks like. Bovard looks pretty "talented" to me, or was that just the Highlands kids not knowing how to play the game of football over in Ft. Thomas?

I'll bite. I can't speak for the entire 35 years, but I know there were years in the late 80s when CovCath was not top 5 in the region. In the early 90s there were some solid Holmes and Holy Cross teams and in the late 90s there were some good Highlands' teams. While CovCath is usually near the top of the region in terms of talent, in any give year there are other teams at the same level or higher. This year Holmes is at that level and Highlands and NewCath have proven they can compete with the Colonels on a given night. And yes, there have been some disappointing regional losses along the way as well.

 

You didn't bite, you nibbled. Of course someone else in the region is going to be good every year. But, year in and year out, there's no question the school gets the most talented players. Even in the late 80's, as you mentioned, CovCath did have a Thelen kid who went on to make money playing the game.:banana:

This is gut check time for Holmes! I hate to single out on kid but Mr. Jefferson needs a serious gut check. He is supposed to be the senior team leader, point guard, Quarterback and all those things. His team has awaited his arrival from a broken leg all season. Now that he's back what happens? Mr. Jefferson tells Enquirer in interview that nothing short of state title will be accpeted for this team. Somewhere between Tuesday's district game and Friday's championship game he manages to break a team rule getting himself bumped from the starting lineup. Then when he does manage to get into the game the Bulldogs after having to dig out of a 7 point first quarter deficit turns the game around in the second and lead the rest of the way until-----

a very ill advised shot with under a minute remaining in the game. Jefferson is supposed to be a team leader and not acting like a freshman doing silly things i.e. brakeing team rules at tourney time, throwing up a shot (getting it blocked) under a minute left in game and his team leading. If this team really wants to make it to Rupp they need all parts of their team working together at 100%. A senior point guard needs to step up and lead his team in the fires of a heated game not lead them to self destruction. In my views his action off the court were very irresponsible as well on the court. The selfisness Coach Henley talked about in his post game interview has to end or Hlomes will be going Home!

There are many things that can help/hurt the Bulldogs in the upcoming 9th Region Tournament, but I think that their biggest double-edged sword is that Greg Rice is a dynamic player who can take over a game, but he also shoots the ball 9 out of every 10 touches that he gets. Sure, Holmes wants aggressive players who are not afraid to take the ball to the hole, but jeezle, half of his shots are just forced up bad ideas. In the CovCath game he might've passed the ball twice. I don't know the final stats on him but I think he shot the ball like 25 times. If he can learn to control the urge to shoot the ball everytime he gets it and make better decisions with the ball, then I think that the Dogs can get over the hump. He, more than any Holmes player, doesn't appear to understand the word TEAM and it looks as if he's more interested in being a star and dunking it one more time. If he keeps this up, I think this will ultimately hurt them and not help the bigger cause.

Maybe I should of used a better word........athleticism. Now as far as playing football why don't you take a drive over to Ft. Thomas and take a gander in the trophy case. Every once in a while the kids from Ft.Thomas will share.

Talent is self discipline as well as shooting the ball in the hoop. There is no "I" in team and unfortunately, this is what it's all about for Holmes. I know personally the kids from the Tar Heels were never coached as a team. When your so called leader of the team has always been told it is all about him, you see the result on the court and off the court. Maybe that is why he thinks he can expect a team to wait for him to get there before they leave on the bus. It is sad because he truly is talented. I have seen his blow national title opportunities as well due to this same reason. I just hope he figures it out within the next few days.
