Cov. Cath 53 Holmes 50 (35th District)

Featured Replies

All these numbers just prove my point, CovCAth has the most talent in Northern Kentucky and they do almost every year. Year in and year out CovCath has far more talent than any other school.

Given the talent that graces the school, sooner or later someone has to ask the question, why have they only won three regional titles in 35 years?

Are you serious............do you know what talent looks like???? Holmes has a ton more talent than CovCath. Holmes just doesn't know how to play the game. If you were at the game tonight you could see that plain as day.....

From the Ky Post: Jefferson, who spent the first quarter on the bench for a violation of team rules.....

Don't know and don't care what rule Jefferson broke, but who would have thought that a member of the Holmes High School Basketball team, would break a team rule?

Kentucky Post

Tough to explain the recent history of Holmes/CovCath, but here's my feeble effort....

Two years ago, Holmes had four talented underclassmen and a senior. CovCath had Votel, who was a beast, and beat Holmes in two great games, at the least the second of which, in the District finals, came down to a last second shot by Votel. Votel was clearly the best player on the floor, and was the difference at the end of the day. It would have been a great regional final that year had the Colonels not lost to a sub-par Conner team.

Last year, pre-disintegation by Holmes, they played a regular season game at Holmes that was never in doubt. I recall the score being fairly close at the end, but I would bet that anyone that was there would recall that Holmes jumped out to a huge lead and then gave some of it back (as they almost always do) but that the outcome was really never in doubt and that it was obvious who the better team on the floor was that night. Up through February of last year Holmes talent was playing at a high level, at least until after they beat Highlands (who was at the time ranked ahead of CCH). That is when the Holmes meltdown occurred and I don't think Holmes has ever really recovered. After that, Holmes and CCH played in the district last year, Holmes was in complete disarray and CCH was the far better team and won going away.

This year, I would say it would be fair to say Holmes has continued to be in disarray, and last night was really the first time these two met at full strength. Both teams have talented players, and I think that we would all agree that CCH has gotten more out of their talent. For those of us that have watched Holmes teams for many years, we are scratching our heads and wondering what happened because, after they won the region in 05, we expected a three peat and dynasty reminiscent of the Schloemer/Beal days. The talent and athleticism certainly seem to be there, but the mental component that those guys (Schloemer, Wimzie, Malik, Moeves, Davis, Beal, Walton, Simpson, Elmer, etc.) had seems to be missing, at least some of the time, with the current crop.

If both teams can survive the first two rounds of the regional next week, it will be a great game to watch. I just hope Holmes and CCH both get there and bring their A games, because I am not sure we have seen that happen very often in the past 3 years.

I was at the game and Holmes should of pulled out that win. The problem I see with Holmes is they are so undisciplined. They were up with a minute left and didn't have to shoot. They go right down the court and throw some garbage up...Holmes could of just pulled the ball out and let CovCath foul them. It's a shame with all that talent and they can't get it done.......

So correct was yours, and my comment last night radierbird: Per the same Ky Post article....

Holmes coach David Henley said poor shot selection was the reason his team faltered in the fourth quarter.

"It's something we've had to deal with over the years," Henley said. "We shoot the ball before passing it and we just start taking really bad shots."

If these two meet in the finals it will be hard for CC to beat them again.

That's what they said about CCH beating HHS again in the football tourney.

Was that Hill or his evil twin? He not only shot poorly, but had several turnovers. He shot poorly, partly due to a poor shot selection. I have seen him play many times and this was the worst he has ever played when I was there. There will be no repeat of that if they play again.

I agree with the post concerning the poor second half officiating. The same crew that did such a nice job the first half called several charging calls wrong and they were not difficult calls to make. The one on Hill was called correctly, but CCH was moving on a couple of others. One of Grimes shots was blocked by a player who was about 2 feet over him and the Holmes crowd eruped when a foul was called. The referee halted for half a second and then pointed to his hip. It was an obvious attempt to justify an anticipted foul call.

I thought Jefferson's attempt to take the game over coupled with a couple of out-of-bounds rockets disguised as lobs were heavy contributions toward the loss. On balance he played pooprly. As pointed out elsewhere, Rice was great last night and kept his composure despite the fact that several fouls which could have been called were not called.

CovCath's interior passing was excellent. Grimes going 7 for 7 was a tribute to that and the fact that he and Maile really move well without the ball and that the guards were alert. CovCath has several players with quick hands and they were able to strip the ball on several ocassions. They also do a great job of team rebounding by having several players around the ball to retrieve rebounds which hit the floor.

I don't think the 9th can go wrong with either of these teams representing our Region.

If you consider shot selection, passing ability, and general basketball IQ as talent, then CovCath is far superior, and I can't find any reason not too.

Holmes win win by double digits next week, if CCH makes it to the finals.

Where is the logic to say that after a team has been beat 3 times in one season, along with 8 out of the last 10 meetings, will beat them by double digits.

Normally private schools are accused of an unfair advantage, but in this instance, it seems that they have no chance.

1. Welcome to the site.

2. Good analysis.

3. I like a poster who knows their history.

Last time I checked this was a basketball game, not a track meet; so team often beats pure athletic ability!! Good recent example I can cite was when Brossart beat University Heights in the All "A" semis, the radio guys remarked "If this was a track meet, we'd only win the shot put (Cooper D-1 shotputter)", and it was true, but BB won the "basketball game" by 20 points!!

Until Holmes' seniors learn to play solid, fundimental, selfless basketball, they will still fall prey to losing against better teams!! Athletic ability will only take you so far, and as Coach Henley remarked "We played selfish tonight...and we've been doing it for 9 games (is that when they got back to "full strength"??), but have been getting away with it......" Bad time of your careers to try and change??

If you consider shot selection, passing ability, and general basketball IQ as talent, then CovCath is far superior, and I can't find any reason not too.

Almost all of the stuff you are talking about can be thought. You can't teach athletic ability.......I personally think you either have it or you don't....

Were Pete Rose or Larry Bird "talented" in your opinion??

Were Pete Rose or Larry Bird "talented" in your opinion??

Definately......you have to have athletic ability to make as far as they made it. Another thing you can't teach is heart and those two had it for sure..

This is gut check time for Holmes! I hate to single out on kid but Mr. Jefferson needs a serious gut check. He is supposed to be the senior team leader, point guard, Quarterback and all those things. His team has awaited his arrival from a broken leg all season. Now that he's back what happens? Mr. Jefferson tells Enquirer in interview that nothing short of state title will be accpeted for this team. Somewhere between Tuesday's district game and Friday's championship game he manages to break a team rule getting himself bumped from the starting lineup. Then when he does manage to get into the game the Bulldogs after having to dig out of a 7 point first quarter deficit turns the game around in the second and lead the rest of the way until-----

a very ill advised shot with under a minute remaining in the game. Jefferson is supposed to be a team leader and not acting like a freshman doing silly things i.e. brakeing team rules at tourney time, throwing up a shot (getting it blocked) under a minute left in game and his team leading. If this team really wants to make it to Rupp they need all parts of their team working together at 100%. A senior point guard needs to step up and lead his team in the fires of a heated game not lead them to self destruction. In my views his action off the court were very irresponsible as well on the court. The selfisness Coach Henley talked about in his post game interview has to end or Hlomes will be going Home!

I think alot of the problem is that the coach for Holmes has never really been able to get these kids on board.
