Cov. Cath 53 Holmes 50 (35th District)

Featured Replies

I think alot of the problem is that the coach for Holmes has never really been able to get these kids on board.

Too many egos on the team. The worst thing that could of have ever happened to them was making it to Rupp as sophmores. As a Coach you can do ever thing in your power but when they step on the court it is the players who make their own decisions that affect the game.

Almost all of the stuff you are talking about can be thought. You can't teach athletic ability.......I personally think you either have it or you don't....

So you define talent as what can not be taught....

Definately......you have to have athletic ability to make as far as they made it. Another thing you can't teach is heart and those two had it for sure..

Then it seems that what CovCath lacks in athletic ability (although Jacobs, Bovard, Brown, Grimes, Bondick, Roll, and Schmerge are as athletic as they come), they make up for in heart, which I guess is more important.

All these numbers just prove my point, CovCAth has the most talent in Northern Kentucky and they do almost every year. Year in and year out CovCath has far more talent than any other school.

Given the talent that graces the school, sooner or later someone has to ask the question, why have they only won three regional titles in 35 years?

I'll bite. I can't speak for the entire 35 years, but I know there were years in the late 80s when CovCath was not top 5 in the region. In the early 90s there were some solid Holmes and Holy Cross teams and in the late 90s there were some good Highlands' teams. While CovCath is usually near the top of the region in terms of talent, in any give year there are other teams at the same level or higher. This year Holmes is at that level and Highlands and NewCath have proven they can compete with the Colonels on a given night. And yes, there have been some disappointing regional losses along the way as well.

And that indeed is really a shame in playing a team sport...... I just wonder if Hills problem on the floor last night (lack of scoring) had anything to do with all the problems on and off the floor. From what I understand Austin is a great kid, and I just wonder if all this is just getting to him, meaning all the problems, time after time after time.....

Maybe, just maybe...Coaching has something to do with this rivalery. Question: If Coach L has the Dogs, are they 0-3 against CCH?

From the Ky Post: Jefferson, who spent the first quarter on the bench for a violation of team rules.....

Don't know and don't care what rule Jefferson broke, but who would have thought that a member of the Holmes High School Basketball team, would break a team rule?

Kentucky Post

That ould have been late for practice or anything minor of that sort, what's the vendetta against the bulldogs oldguy. Every post of yours is rather negative toward Holmes. Whats up wit dat?

It's hard not to be negative against a team like Holmes. They've got all the talent in the world, but won't get over themselves and put it together. After awhile it's not sad anymore, it's just a joke.

Sandman, pretty convenient of you at stopping at 35 years, and not going back to say 40 years, to make a point. Of course those five years you didn't go farther back to, found CovCath wining the Ninth Region five straight times, which is a record I don't think will ever be broken, in this day and age in the Ninth Region.....

BTW the Sweet Sixteen record is seven straight times to the show, so CovCath was in striking distance of joining a very exclusive club....

Just calling them as I see them...

Has anyone but the Holmes players themselves caused any of the problem that they have had for the last two years?

So anything minor, like being late for practice prior to a big game from your team leader and point guard? Thank you, as you couldn't have pointed out the difference between these two teams any better.... It called discipline and the Holmes players don't seem to have it either on the court, or off......and even your Coach called them out per the paper this morning........

The coach couldn't get them on board, or some of the kids wouldn't get on board?? A coach can only do so much, especially with all the turmoil he's had the last couple of years, none of which has been his creation??

It must be dissappointing to be a CovCath player, when all you hear is that "Holmes is more talented". How bout giving credit to the players (and I am not just talking to you).

You give Coach L that team and they are 0-3. I don't think Listerman could do a better job then Henley could.

Tough to explain the recent history of Holmes/CovCath, but here's my feeble effort....

Two years ago, Holmes had four talented underclassmen and a senior. CovCath had Votel, who was a beast, and beat Holmes in two great games, at the least the second of which, in the District finals, came down to a last second shot by Votel. Votel was clearly the best player on the floor, and was the difference at the end of the day. It would have been a great regional final that year had the Colonels not lost to a sub-par Conner team.

Last year, pre-disintegation by Holmes, they played a regular season game at Holmes that was never in doubt. I recall the score being fairly close at the end, but I would bet that anyone that was there would recall that Holmes jumped out to a huge lead and then gave some of it back (as they almost always do) but that the outcome was really never in doubt and that it was obvious who the better team on the floor was that night. Up through February of last year Holmes talent was playing at a high level, at least until after they beat Highlands (who was at the time ranked ahead of CCH). That is when the Holmes meltdown occurred and I don't think Holmes has ever really recovered. After that, Holmes and CCH played in the district last year, Holmes was in complete disarray and CCH was the far better team and won going away.

This year, I would say it would be fair to say Holmes has continued to be in disarray, and last night was really the first time these two met at full strength. Both teams have talented players, and I think that we would all agree that CCH has gotten more out of their talent. For those of us that have watched Holmes teams for many years, we are scratching our heads and wondering what happened because, after they won the region in 05, we expected a three peat and dynasty reminiscent of the Schloemer/Beal days. The talent and athleticism certainly seem to be there, but the mental component that those guys (Schloemer, Wimzie, Malik, Moeves, Davis, Beal, Walton, Simpson, Elmer, etc.) had seems to be missing, at least some of the time, with the current crop.

If both teams can survive the first two rounds of the regional next week, it will be a great game to watch. I just hope Holmes and CCH both get there and bring their A games, because I am not sure we have seen that happen very often in the past 3 years.

The best first post from someone i have ever seen.

I'll guess if Listerman had these kids they'd have lost all three, and by larger margins? However it might have been with a slightly different lineup?? :D

I'll give credit to the kids--They're one heck of a talented team!! They play well together, play good "D" and unselfish "O"!! :thumb:

CCH is very good TEAM...just think Holmes has a little more talent. That being said, I believe the bigger differance is CCH is a more disiplined group, by far. Can CCH shoot, pass, defend, rebound, screen? Yes they can, and very well.
