My Top 5 Pet Peeves About High School Football Fans

Featured Replies

I am not young (born before a manned rocket ever went into space), and yet I find myself frustrated by high school football fans (mostly not young people) who continually say and do these things.

1. “Why are they wearing those black colored uniforms? Those aren’t the school colors”. (Maybe because the current players, coaches and school administrators are ok with it)

2. “Back in our day…….” (Newsflash- nobody really cares)

3. “Why aren’t they live-streaming the (fill in the blank) game?” (Do you see the trend. Live-streaming keeps more and more people at home, dry, cool or warm, comfortable. Get out and support the kids and the coaches in person. That is high school sports)

4. “Why do they accept cash? Or, Why don’t they accept credit cards?  (Hint - Carry both and you will be good to go)

5. “How did that kid at _______ high school get eligible?” (Only the transfer kids at our school should be eligible).

I was born not long before the new millennium, not as old, though I am old enough to understand that #4 is an inconvenience. Doing online ticketing is fine but it is completely unnecessary to not accept cash at the gate for an event. Especially at the HS level, not a fan of that at all, cash is king.

Correct. That was then. This is now. Times change.

I want to take these on!

1. I am not a huge fan of black uniforms but this is about the players/coaches, if they like and want it, go for it.  So I agree with you.

2. "Back in our day or back in my day" is a slippery slope.  If you just want to complain things were better back in the day then I agree, but if you want to tell an entertaining story that provides insights about the past vs. the present, I disagree.  It really comes down to your motives and delivery.  If you want to be heard, know your audience and make it interesting.

3. Live-streaming is the single best thing that has happened for BGP.  Pretty much everything else that has happened has been a loser for BGP.  But that is selfish on my part.  However, for many people, especially older people and grandparents living out of town, live-streaming is amazing.  We all should have a choice and I have no issue at all with paying for any and all live streams and if I was only following one team it would not be that expensive.  So as much as "we" would all like to get out and support the kids at any given venue, that is not always feasible and again we should all have a choice.

4. Cash is King.  And we as a society are very short-sighted if we all don't demand cash be accepted.  With that said, carry a debit/credit card too or put another way, always have a backup plan.

5.  Let the kids play and let them transfer, who cares.  No one (or no school system) owns any kids.  Kids and parents should be able to decide where they go to school and no one should be able to interfere with that.

I agree with the sentiment of always getting out and going to support a school when you can. Trust me, I have been to a football game the last 6 straight weekends and driven a total of 10 hours to do so, and I don't see that streak ending anytime soon. That being said, as a student who is outside of Kentucky for most of the year streaming is an absolute necessity for me to keep up with games during college football season.

I agree that live streaming is great for some.  My daughters are away at college, and they want to watch their brother.  One of them is in Tanzania for a study abroad, so if there is a live streaming option then she gets to watch.

Live-streaming

I have mixed feelings about the livestreams. I completely appreciate having them and almost every broadcast is satisfactory to me with quality. I do worry about funds being allocated to the school that they are missing out on. I know that should be the farthest thing from our minds, but I think it does have a great effect. We had a rivalry game recently that between the two livestream's had nearly 16k views. I know that not everyone would have went to the games, but I do know that there were about 3,000 in attendance, that to me leaves so much money on the table for the schools. Imagine gate money at $15,000 vs $45,000 if everyone came and tickets were $5/each. I know not everyone would be able to come and I don't want sit here and complain that technology really is making our experiences better, I also think there are more football fans now than ever. I do think its sad when the stands aren't nearly full and there are so many people watching from home, even on good weather nights. I don't know what the fix is, I don't want to blame the livestreams, I do want to make the crowd more exciting.

Black uniforms can be cool, I support it if the school has the money for alt unis, go for it.

Sometimes the "back in my day" crowd has nothing left to talk about and are just trying to be nostalgic, which is fine usually, unless it is being used to disparage the current program.

Love live streaming, but I agree with the sentiment that if you can go to the game, GO! However, it is not always feasible for everyone to go (several comments have mentioned reasons why that may be.)

Cash is important, and I would love to carry both. Sometimes I do forget to get cash out of the ATM so having a card option is good. Both options are easy to have (huge fan of when concessions take cash and card.)

Whatever your opinion on transfers, keep it consistent. Do not just like it favor your school and hate on other schools transfers. We hardly ever know the full story on why some kids transfer.

Streaming!

I am here in bold above 100%, but I think that was @MBKT's point in the beginning.  That horse has left the barn and ain't coming back.  Streaming is a way of life now.  I agree with AT though that the schools should share in the money.

It just boils down, if you can go then go.  But I'm thankful for my old beatdown friend NFHS in showing the BG Frosh vs Henderson Frosh tonight!

Charge $10 or $15 for the livestream. ?‍♂️

With that said, all schools should have media/broadcasting departments and if they have the department the schools should utilize it.

Can also incorporate sponsors to pay for stream and some schools do that.
