Well it’s finally that time of year!  The greatest season for BGP High School football, especially when you are a Highlands fanatic!  The excitement in the Fort is extremely high that this might be a fun and exciting ride that these young men will take us on this season.  When the schedule was published everyone gasped that this is going to be maybe the most daunting schedule a Highlands team has EVER faced in their 110 year history.  I would LOVE to have anyone post a more difficult season schedule that Highlands has EVER faced. 

The journey starts this coming Friday, Aug 22^nd at 7pm at David Cecil Memorial Stadium in Fort Thomas, KY.  Their opponent for the very first time meeting: 6A Powerhouse The Frederick Douglass Broncos.

Both Frederick Douglass and Highlands the last 2 seasons has seen their season end unfortunately at the Semi Final stage of the State Tournament.

Highlands will begin their 5^th season under the leadership of the Legendary Coach Bob Sphire.  Who has compiled a Highlands record in the last 4 years of 37-14.  The one missing piece in his Highlands resume that the community is anxiously awaiting is that State Trophy.  The most recent trophy in the Trophy case has a date of 2014 on it….This continues to be the longest draught in School history between titles. 

I am super excited to see what these Birds can do.  There are so many of these players that will hear their names as big time playmakers or men in the trenches blowing things up.  Litmer, Lorenzen, Benke, Williams, Merz, Dunn, Duncan, Feldbrugge to just name a few…..  Lastly, I am hoping everyone is healthy (our new trainer better be doing his job), I know there were a few players that sat out last night at the Blue/White scrimmage.

The young Broncos begin their 2025 season with a trip to norther KY to take on one of the top teams in 4A in the Highlands Bluebirds.

The Broncos graduated 29 seniors off of last year's 6A state semifinal team. The only have a total of 8 returning starters with just 3 starters on offense and 5 on offense.

On offense the Broncos will rely very heavily on junior running back Dakari Talbert who rushed for almost 850 yards last season in a very deep backfield he averaged 7.9 yards per carry. Their new quarterback Brady Ross will be looking towards returning TE Terry Cayson. On defense they will be led by returning defensive backs Cionne Conn and Demond Green. The Bronco defense allowed less than 17 points per game last season.

The Broncos very tough schedule especially at the front end with the first 3 games at Highlands and Trinity with a home game vs. Manuel. They also have non-district games vs. Corbin, Boyle Co. and Male. This will be tough, but Coach McPeek hopes it will help make the Broncos better by season's end.

Go Broncos!!

Easiest way to put this, if Douglass wins, 'Birds fans should be CONCERNED. 

I’m taking the Birds in this one. They have a ton of talent all over the field and the massive oline will be to much for Freddy D. Good luck both teams.

The new Athletic Trainer starts in a few weeks and she is another female. Excited to have her for the athletes & community. Good luck & stay healthy, Birds!

Interesting, I’m thinking a Scott Co fan knows F Douglass pretty well.

I strongly disagree with this statement, especially after watching the replay from their last scrimmage. They’re a very very young team with a new QB , but they have athletes everywhere and playmakers everywhere. They’re big , strong and fast. Their young guys just need to get a couple of games under their belt and I’m going to say Fridays scrimmage was a big help. Their line more than anyone has lot of cleaning up to do but I have a feeling Frederick Douglass is going to be just fine, plus ST X looked very very good. They also have a great coaching staff who I’m sure is going to clean a lot of stuff up at practice this week. If anyone in FT. Thomas is taking this game as a walk in the park I think you’re out of your mind. 

Highlands hasn’t done anything to have fans think this game is a walk in the park. I watched most of both scrimmages and most of Blue/White game and I’m guessing this will be at most a 1 score game. Hope Birds get going quick in this one. 
 

Imo, Birds need to move ball down the field little at a time.‘short passes and runs. No need to go big! Use the line and athletes they have, and let D be aggressive. That’s been missing this pre season so far!
