Logic of transfer portal opening today

Featured Replies

Can anyone explain why the transfer portal opened today?  We are in the midst of a great March Madness and we have 16 programs intensely focused on winning it all and then the other 200/300(?) D1 programs staffs are vigorously scouring the portal.  Distraction for participating staffs, participating teams, media, and college basketball fans in general.  Dinosaur mind here just wondering what possibly are the decision makers are thinking.

I agree with you @Oldercoach!  At a minimum the powers that be could have waited one more week, two if they really wanted to be champs.

I was thinking about that this weekend. So what if your team is in the Sweet Sixteen? What a fiasco this has become.

You could have asked this exact same question on December 9 regarding college football.

I can kinda see the December 9 for college football because the semester is ending and kids need to get into their new school for the spring semester. There's really no logic at all for it to happen right now in basketball.

Simon Kenton grad 7'2 Gabe Dynes has entered the transfer portal.

900 players have entered in first two days according to Dick Weiss.

In my opinion, it doesn't really make a difference when the portal opens. Players (and/or their agents) are being contacted all year long....especially in December, January, February. Additionally, there will be more than 100 players who enter the portal after the 'window' is closed.

Sure, over 700 players entered on the first day, but likely the best 150 transfers have already had direct (illegal, happens very frequently) or indirect (usually through a former AAU or HS coach) with other college staffs who expressed interest during the season.

For the remaining 550 who entered yesterday, at least half of them were told to enter the portal (their scholarship was NOT renewed).

I've ready between 40-48% of players in the portal will not find a home this cycle.

This...don't feel sorry for the college coaches about the portal...they are using it to get rid of their dead weight as well.

SO while 16 teams hate to see the portal open...another 300 teams are ready to get their players.

Remember too though, that the LM and MM programs will lose their best players. The low major teams who fired and are looking to replace 3-4 guys that didn't produce, have to do the same for their best 1-2 players who want to test the market.

The whole idea of 'fit' in terms of if you will play real, meaningful, impactful minutes, the academic programs available, the location/size of the school, the relationships with the coaching staff - all of it is thrown out the window for money. When I played college basketball, I was advised "go to a school where you'd be happy even if basketball wasn't a factor." Foreign concept now.

There is no logic.

Open it the Wednesday after the title game, leave it open for a month and call it a day.

That's too common sense for the NCAA.

I would go as far to say no portal opens until last NCAA championship is played (First of June...Leave it open for a month.

It makes student athletes stick something out at least a year!

40 players from the Horizon League have entered the portal so far.  7 are from Detroit Mercy.

Major ESPN discussion today about how portal and NIL will lead to the demise of mid-majors being competitive in March Madness.  This year with 16 of the final 16 being from major conferences is not an aberration.  If a college player can play at the higher levels he will enter the portal and go for the money.  Simple as that.  Crazy talk about big man position routinely getting $1.5 million and it is going up.  Gulp!

Makes ZERO sense.  Not only are players still playing, but coaches are still coaching.  It's not fair to ask Mark Pope, John Scheyer or any of the coaches remaining to not only get their team ready to play Thursday or Friday, but also be working the portal.  Just move the date a couple weeks.  It;s not that big a deal.
