Was this the team where Coach Faust got a call from a small college looking for a TE?  Jerry supposedly responded…”Yes, I have a player that can definitely play for you”.  Coach comes to scout the you

  • And most important, Moeller's QB play will be far superior to what we saw from Springfield in the scrimmage.

This must be a backstory that I don't know anything about!  Just realize if someone wants to chat about the Crusaders of the late 1970's, I'm very likely to jump in.

For what its worth... I always thought the '82 team was the most talented.

Hiawatha Francisco, DJ Francisco, Byron Larkin, John Shaffer, Shane Bullough

There were a bunch of good teams over the years.

I particularly remember 1977 when Moeller defeated Monsignor Farrell (NY) 30-0 at Nippert Stadium.  It was total dominance of a championship team from another state at a time when those kind of games didn't happen very often.

My dad took me to the 82 Moeller/Princeton game at Nippert. It was so much fun and a very entertaining game. I remember how taken I was with the Moeller uniforms. I have always been a fan.

Those old uniforms with the stars are awesome.

We should not fail to mention that the legendary performance of his Moeller teams led to his being hired as the head coach of the Fighting Irish.

That hire was a mistake for both.

Just reviewed Coach Faust record at Moeller, which was a new program he started.  Last 6 years the Crusaders went 70-1, winning 5 Ohio State titles.  Said he would never leave Moeller except for his dream job…Notre Dame.  During his Fighting Irish tenure they went 30-26-1 and he resigned not wanting his dream school being embarrassed by firing him.  Quoted later to have loved everyday of his Notre Dame time except the 26 days when they lost.  Got to have visited the campus to appreciate why he enjoyed just walking the grounds in his later years.

Anyone know the Crusaders all-time record against Trinity? Or other Kentucky schools?

Moeller has played Trinity 11 times over the years. Crusaders have won 7 of those 11. Shamrocks have won 4 of those 11. Teams renew a 2-year home and home series this fall. At Moeller in 2025 (game to be played at Mt St Joseph University). At Trinity in 2026.

Two of those wins came when I was there. I look at Moeller as a true test of Trinity’s strength as a team that season.

Chicago Mt.Carmel 43
Cincinnati Moeller 42

Carmel went for 2 pt conversion with no time left.
