Here is the facts about KYHSFB. IMVHO, there are a lot more good coaches than there are programs.   ...know what? Scratch that. The number of bad programs is the vast majority. I have a

Oh my - congrats to coach Fallin - actually did the best job of any coach since Larry Moore IMO (not counting Poynter’s 70’s run with a few years in the 90’s.  Congrats to him.

Owensboro has a D1 RB in Hampton and a D1 LB in Ashley who should transition to QB next year - they have a stud in Dillard at WR.  OHS needs to swing for the fences here - now or never.  They are loaded year after year for 5A.

Here is my list:

Top Class:   Kevin Wallace at ST. X - HUGE WINNER everywhere.  6A is tough and not sure how he likes Louisville - may be planted there, but he owns Rash stadium anyway!  Love to have Coach Wallace!

Brandon Smith - SWarren phenom coach - another home run - moving to tough 6A, with a great program, but Smith to Owensboro would be a home run.

There may be some others like these 2 but these 2 come INSTANTLY into my mind.  Winning coach, tons of talent, recipe for success.

My next step down is John Edge at Apollo - great coach, hard nosed (some might say too hard nosed), but a proven winner.  If they can’t get Wallace or Smith I would go Edge.  OHS AD better swing for the fences here - NOW OR NEVER!!!

Where would you consider OHS in terms of top jobs in the state? I say top 10 potentially top 5!

Thank you!  Once the meeting was called, I somewhat expected it to come down. Wanted to wait until the kids knew for sure before running with it.

As far as internal candidates, I'd think Will Barnes, Drew Hall and Blake Roberts (Strength Coach) would all be considered as candidates.  Some have said Hall does not have interest, but who knows if that is true or not?  This is a job that should attract a ton of attention.  No disrespect meant to anyone inside the program but I feel like Owensboro needs some fresh eyes on it.  The winds in Owensboro have been blowing toward Owensboro Catholic over the past few seasons with the transfers of Maddox and of course Crowe.  Not to mention other departures this past offseason.  I had heard some more Devils could be on the move this coming offseason but that could change by going outside the program to hire someone.  Just feels like the program needs some fresh energy is all.  That is not meant to disparage what Coach Fallin did there at all.  I'm just reading the tea leaves with the chatter behind the scenes.

No offense here @ApolloFan98 but if Owensboro does another Family hire whether it be Barnes or Roberts, that is a joke.  Owensboro is a top 5 team year-in and year out - get a proven STATE championship winner, not an internal hire - that’s the problem.  If O had won 5 championships in the past 10 years, then yes maybe an internal hire, but Owensboro needs new blood - not family here.  Time for a change to win state championships, not city/county titles.

As a fan. Would love to see a seasoned vet with a state championship under their belt take the job. But with a good portion of the talent coming back for their senior and junior season an in house hire sounds like a good shock absorber.

No @Devils Fan - no way I want an internal hire - We need a culture changer not the defensive Coordinator.  Please for God Sakes don’t blow this Owensboro AD.

Name I’ve heard as a possible candidate is Brian Rector former coach at Father Ryan in Nashville and a native of Owensboro.

Has he won multiple state championships?  If not, then no please do not apply.

Owensboro's dynasty rating on Calpreps for last 5 years has them 19th so probably in the 10-19 range but I would say closer to 10.

Let me just say this - they are on the same talent level as Bowling Green most years.   Huge speed everywhere each year.  Until the past year they’ve had a huge dominating O-line too.  I would say for a coach that has won state championships- they will continue to do so at Owensboro.  Davies’s County is big too (Apollo, DC, Owensboro Catholic, Owensboro).  I would guess star players in those schools would love to come play for Wallace or Smith or similar coach.  I think Owensboro would dominate the talent pool.

While I agree that Kevin Wallace (or Brandon Smith) would be a homerun hire(s), but saying "No" to internal hires....you know that Kevin Wallace was an internal hire for Bowling Green back before the '96 season, right? Not only was he an internal hire, but was also an internal hire who already had 10 years head coaching experience under his belt at a previous school with nowhere near the yearly resources/talent level...10 years that included NO winning seasons, NO playoff wins and a career record to that point that was in and around 20 games BELOW .500 win percentage.

I say that to say this.

Don't be so quick to be anti "multiple head championships" or bust/no internal hires.

Because you could have the best makeup artists there are putting lipstick on pigs, and at the end of the day...that pig is still going to be a pig.

As much as I wish this state operated like Texas, Georgia, Alabama, etc? It doesn't. At least for 99% of the schools (by operating like MANY schools in those states, I mean a 100K+ salary, unlimited resources/facilities, teaching little to no classes at all & classes they do teach? One is usually a full on athletic period where they can practice during the day, AM/PM depending & all of the coaching staff can attend around their "teaching" schedules, etc).

This isn't the 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's....coaches at already state championship competing/winning programs don't (willingly & directly) leave for other ones in state.

Since 2000, all classes, there have been just FOUR who had won one and/or multiple state titles leave (willingly & directly) school "A" in Kentucky for school "B".

...and, just SEVEN since 1990.

Coaches since 1990 in KY that left their current state championship winning school for another. It's NINE, not 7 @Colonels_Wear_Blue can fact check me.

- '91 Joe Jaggers- Fort Knox to North Hardin (same county)

- '94 Tom Duffy- Highlands to Henderson County

- '97 Dudley Hilton- Bell County to Bourbon County (then back to Bell)

-'02 Mark Brown- Nelson County to John Hardin (didn't immediately require a move & even when did? 30 mile move)

- '12 Mike Holcomb- Breathitt County to Letcher Central (retired full pension KTRS, didn't have to move family)

- '12 Larry French- Boyle County to Southwestern

- '19 Kevin Wallace- Bowling Green to St. X (retired full pension KTRS, then able to go into the private sector of education)

- '20 Doug Preston- Franklin Simpson to John Hardin

- '21 Mark Dixon- Hazard to Perry County Central (same county)

I personally am a no ‘in the family’ Hire here…it’s not worked…Owensboro should have some state championships all the talent that’s rolled through there.  They should go after those top two and any other with similar pedigree period.

Brandon Smith would be my first call.

Joe Morris?

Highly unlikely IMO but I would make the call and test the waters.

I don't disagree on any of that, but I'll say this...to get current head coaches like those two (or any others) with some hardware at their current school (and, always being in the mix), Owensboro is going to have to pony up and offer the moon/stars. Which, with them being a one horse town in terms of being their own school district, then they COULD do some things to entice an absolute home run hire.

Corbin just did it this offseason in hiring Luke Salmon's hiring him (away from Cabell Midland in Huntington, WV) in a central office spot (no teaching) along with being the head football coach, making it an above six figure package.

Perry County Central (one horse town itself being the only high school in Perry County) did the same to lure Mark Dixon away the city school, Hazard. He, too, has a central office type position with no teaching responsibilities.
