Is the current state of the program good enough?

Below is a link to a post I made early in the season.  Nothing has happened this year to change my original thoughts.

St. X the in the 11 seasons since Glaser retired:

92-40 (69.7%)

31.2 offensive points per game

17.6 defensive points per game 

1 championship, 2 runner-ups, 4 semifinals appearances 

 

Glaser’s last 11 seasons:

125-27 (82.2%)

36.1 offensive points per game

13.2 defensive points per game 

2 championships, 3 runner-ups, 6 semifinals appearances 

 

Stats are from the KHSAA website. 

You can't compare to Glaser or you'll be disappointed. Similar to Trinity comparing to Beatty. 

The overall win percentage could be an area to complain if they wanted, but 70% is pretty darn good. 

You have every right to be upset, but my real question is what happened this season after the Trinity game?

X was on pace to still be playing IMO.  And I don't fault them for losing to Ryle, who has a terrific team this year, but it's the way they lost to them that's the thing for me.

This is the real question.

Glaser is the goat of St. X football so hard to top what he did but getting a running clock put on you in the 1st half by a team you beat earlier in the season is unacceptable. I trust Coach Wallace will work to get things back on track. The returning players need to work to ensure this doesn't happen again. 

I think it's all cyclical honestly.  The fact Glaser was able to win 2 championships during the Beatty era at Trinity speaks to what a coach he was.  Even Trinity had a few down years right after Beatty left.  I know some of the 8th grade kids that are planning to come to St. X and if they do (fingers crossed they don't ?), St. X will have a really nice freshman class to build off of next year.

They had good freshman class this year so back-to-back good classes would be good. St. X freshman class is largest class in the school with over 300 so I hope the trend continues.

-2022 state quarters

-2023 state champs

-2024 state quarters……. so far (with Male, Manual and St. X all out in round 2)

I wish my team had down years like those.

Yes in 2021 and 2022 Trinity advanced to the state semifinals and quarterfinals, losing to Male and Bryan Station in those contest. But the Rocks record in those years were 6-8 (2021) and 8-5 (2022).

That 2021 season was Trinity's first year under .500 since 1995. Prior to that, the Rocks last losing season was 1971 under Jim Kennedy.

Dave Moore, Roger Gruneisen, Dennis Lampley, and Bob Beatty never had a losing season in their careers at Trinity. The Rocks only have, if my math is right, eight losing seasons in 69 years of varsity football.

The standard is extremely high at Trinity and the same is true for our friends at St. X, as well. Championships are expected. 

Coach Glaser was an excellent football coach. Coach Wallace is an excellent football coach. To argue otherwise would be ludicrous. 

What happened at Ryle Friday night, other than the fact that Ryle has an awful good football team, happens to every coach at some point. Roy Walton, the old coach from Tates Creek, told me that one time after a similar night. He also told me this... any coach that ever tells you it did not happen to him, is lying. 

X has another exceptional class of freshmen coming in. The coaching staff , the head coach, are proven top notch coaches that includes a state title under Coach Wallace. 

I have an admitted bias here. Kevin is a good friend of mine. But, I do not have to get on here and say this. And, I spent a season watching him and his staff operate. It was impressive.

I think the best thing for X football is keep Coach Wallace. 

One thing I am sure of, finding a better coach than Kevin Wallace... will be a TOUGH thing to do. I have been around alot of coaches the past 55 years. Some of them were the best of the best. Friday night was an ugly night for the Tigers. But, that doesn't change the fact that their current head coach is elite.

So as @St. Matthews Boywas stating, even Trinity had a few down years.  Trinity fans were ready to run Coach Cobb out of town.  Yes, those still aren’t bad years by most standards, but they are by Trinity standards.  I guess it’s like the 11 years since Coach Glaser for St. X.  A lot of schools would love 1 title, 2 runner-ups & a 70% winning percentage.

St X isn't like "a lot of schools".  It has administrative, parent and alumni  support and facilities that very few other schools can match.  What has happened the last 2 years isn't "good enough". Especially because the last two years the second round losses were not competitive.

That all being said, Wallace is a good coach and at times this year and last year the the team performed at an elite level. The inconsistency is part of the frustration.  

So hopefully Wallace makes the changes necessary to get it fixed. Being more physical and able to run the ball consistently and tackle better would be great starts.

X then won state three years later. 

Things happen. But nothing is worse for a program than nostalgics who spend all their time looking back while the road ahead is still oncoming.

St. X’s facilities are pretty bad. Their weight room is dated, the locker room is comical, and their field is basically asphalt. In 2010, X had great facilities. A lot of KY has caught up and passed them in the last 14 years.

I respect you and your opinion.

Coach Wallace is a good guy and has a proven track record elsewhere. However, he has to embrace physical football more and more effectively develop linemen to consistently win in 6A. He seems to want to emphasize perimeter play more. And the defense has to get fixed. 

While he is an elite person and may be an elite coach, he may not be an elite coach for St. X.  He must make the necessary adaptations to be elite for the Tigers.
