Who's on upset alert this week?

Have you asked all the players and coaches if they wanted to play if not how do you know. If you don’t want to watch or listen to the games that’s your choice but I don’t know how you could know what every #4 seed coach and player wants.

Yes I do know several coaches and players.  Its a waisted week. If everyone wants to play another game then add a regular season game at the end. Schedule someone that is a competitive game. Playoffs are supposed to reward teams that had a good regular season and should be somewhat competitive. Its insane that 0-10 teams makes the playoffs and get beat by 50 and drive an hour to do so

No fourth place teams in playoffs however they play another fourth place team the first week of playoffs.

Gives each team an opportunity to go out with a win.

You didn’t answer the question I said have you asked all. If there are coaches that don’t want to play why don’t they just forfeit, from what the guys are saying on here as long as you do it before game week there’s no punishment. Generally it seems to me the coaches and teams that don’t want to play just forfeit and everyone that does want to play should be allowed too. I don’t think the KHSAA is making anyone play if they don’t want too.

It sure was fun in 2019 being a part of a four seed that knocked out a cross town rival who was the one seed. Then it was even more fun winning the second round game and the district championship. Wasn't as fun getting destroyed round 3, but glad we got the opportunity to make some noise!

I always think back to 1997 when a thread like this pops up.

Class AA District 5 standings

Boyle County 10-0 (6-0)

Danville 9-1 (5-1)

Bourbon County 7-3 (4-2)

Lexington Catholic 7-3 (3-3)

The district swept round 1 with an average score of 39-10 across the 4 games, including 4 seed Lex Cath knocking off 1 seed Rockcastle Co 28-7.

Lex Cath then beat Danville (2) and Dudley Hilton's Bourbon shut-out district champ and unbeaten Boyle (1) 24-0 in round 2, setting up a (3) vs (4) regional final. Bourbon shut-out Lex Cath 20-0 that week, and went on to shut-out another 1 seed in (previously unbeaten 13-0) Lawrence County in the semi's for its 3rd straight playoff shut-out and a trip to the finals  where they beat another (1) seed in Owensboro Catholic to win it all.

One of the best playoff runs I've ever seen.

That was back when there was four classes. Playoffs made more sense because not every team made them

Yeah,  there were less classes and more teams per district then, but my post wasn't some kind of commentary on the state of the playoffs and classes in 2024, it was more just about that run of Bourbon County.

The original post asked about who was in upset alert and it reminded me of Bourbon County pulling off 3 significant upsets in the same playoffs while district mate Lex Cath pulled off one (maybe 2) of their own. It was a great playoff run for a team who pulled upset after upset in convincing fashion on its way to a surprise state title. Whether it was 4 classes or 6 they were still winning games week after week that were definitely considered upsets.

Not every team made it them and not every team makes it now.

In 1997 there were 198 teams that played a district schedule (14 teams played as independents). 128 made the playoffs, meaning 65% of those who attempted to make the playoffs qualified.

This year there are 220 teams competing in district play (only 4 independents, likely because of the increase in classes). 192 made the postseason, which is 87%.

so 22 more teams make the playoffs in a small state.  At some point the season ends. if you can't win 1 or 2 games you have no business in the playoffs. When it was four classes you eliminate most of the winless and 1 win teams.

I'm confident we'll never see that run replicated in the six class era. Even if we still had four classes, it would be highly improbable.

If Dudley Hilton never accomplished anything else in his career, that '97 playoff run was enough to immortalize him as a folk hero among coaches.

Had to be Bourbon County’s best team ever.

Not to be glib, but of course it was. The previous season Bourbon had went 3-7. They had had nine consecutive losing seasons. They had never won a playoff game and had only played in three.

They've had a few good teams since then, including back to back state semifinal losses to Belfry in 2012 and 2013 under John Hodge, but obviously 1997 was by far their best season.

Cooper in 2012 with the 6 classes was a 3 seed like Bourbon County. Cooper went on to make it to the State Championship game that year. They just didn’t finish the deal like Bourbon County did. However, that was a pretty similar scenario to what happened in the 4 class system. So it does happen, just not often.
