6A Manual will travel to 3A Central for a 7:00 pm kickoff.

Manual defeated Central 26-0 last season and look to be one of the top teams in 6A especially if they find a QB to replace last year's QB Eli Creech who was very good QB for the Crimsons. His backup was Kaden Mack so he could possibly be the guy this season. Manual returns top RB Gerian Traynor who had 1041 yards and 16 TD's. They also return top WR Willis Nofsinger who had 754 yards and 7 TD's. The Manual defense looks strong this year returning their top 3 tacklers with LB Jaylen Hayes with 84 tackles, DL Cameron Jessee 77 tackles, and LB Braydon Underwood 75 tackles.

Central looks to be a championship contender in 3A as they return 18 starters. They start the season playing four 6A teams and one 5A team before starting district play so they will be battle tested like usual. The offense will be led by returning QB Steven Smith who passed for 1203 yards and 14 TD's. They also return 3-star speedster RB Cortez Stone who rushed for 1871 yards and 23 TD's and he could eclipse those eye-popping numbers this year. They also return top WR Keivon Smith who had 361 yards and 4 TD's. The defense returns top tackler Avaion Johnson-McNeal with 84 tackles, LB Jaylon Benning Wyatt with 45 tackles, and DB Amontez Woolfolk with 42 tackles. Also look for Cortez Stone to get some reps on defense as well.

With both teams having stout defenses, look for this to not be a high scoring game. With Central returning so many starters I will be surprised if they get shut out again. Manual will be breaking in a new QB so that could also play a factor in Manual's success against a usually tough Central defense. Normally Manual will have more depth but with Central returning so many starters that may not be a factor this year. Regardless, these are two of the state's top teams and should be a great game. Does Central avenge last year's loss or does Manual make it 5 in a row over the Yellowjackets?

Depth and special teams seem to the difference when Central plays the 6A schools. Will be competitive but Manual will wear the Yellowjackets down in the second half.

Manual - 27

Central - 7

This sums up my feelings, as well. Central struggles offensively when they step up against the bigger Louisville schools. The Jackets need some major miscues from Manual to pull it off, and even then, we're talking about a 14-7 type score.

For Central, it will all come down to if they have a passing attack this year or not.  Last year they didn't and everyone could, and did, key on Stone.  Their defense kept them in most games, but offensively, at least against the good teams, they simply weren't balanced enough.  We'll see how it goes this year, but I'm taking Manual here 31-13.

Manual will be way too much for Central, especially this early.

Always one of the best Week 1 games year in and year out, but I'm with you, Crimsons are typically ahead of Central in August. Yellowjackets always seem to improve as the season goes along.

Both teams have a ton of talent returning. Should be a great game. Manual may have more DI, FCS offers than anyone in the state.

More than Douglass?  And either way, good to hear, the more good teams, the better.
