With those two scrimmages and those two games to start the season, we will have a very good idea about the Birds right away.

It's strange to me to see a team schedule a scrimmage against a team you will see in the regular season.

The did it last year too and considering they are in different classifications I see no issue with it and tend to think it is something smart both schools are doing.

Thanks, I didn't know they did it last year.

I know they are in different classifications.  From a coach's standpoint it seems odd to me to have that scrimmage knowing that both of you are going to be even more vanilla and extra careful not to tip your hat too much knowing you will see each other again. 

But I get finding teams at your competition level wanting to scrimmage you and I guess that's the most important aspect.  Highlands wouldn't get anything scrimmaging someone like Dayton and Dayton wouldn't get anything from that scrimmage either (not throwing shade at them).

Engler and Sphire also have history together, so I think its an easy situation for them to tailor the scrimmage to get what they want out of it.

When the Birds and Raiders 1st scheduled this scrimmage in 2022 I thought it was odd as well. This will be the 3rd time they have done this and it actually works out well.

As mentioned earlier, the 2 coaches have a good history. This isn't setup fully as a real game/scrimmage. They usually start off with Oline vs. Dline work, situational and special teams. They usually do a quarter or 2 of full go but QBs can't run or be touched. Both teams run pretty vanilla stuff but it allows them to get specific work in different areas. I feel like both teams benefit from it.

The RPI system doesn't reward teams for playing games outside the state of KY. This schedule was good enough last year with the wins to be the #1 seed in 5A. 

Anyone know why Highlands and Beechwood don’t play each other?  I’d rather see two powerhouse programs in their respective class vs. play a school outside of NKY such as Raceland?

They have played 4 times in the last 25 years, all Beechwood losses.

With RPI, doubtful it will happen. Beechwood vs CCH is a long rivalry or it would be driven off the schedule by KHSAA RPI.

Too bad that being the case.  If the is RPI driving these type of decisions then we will never see the top teams year over year play each other in NKY.

The RPI is flawed and although it may not hurt every program within the State, it’s proven enough to hurt a few which is why it needs to be changed. 

It would be 1 and 4  in the last 25 years if they played them this season.  Beechwood is loaded up and down the roster!11
