Speaking from my limited perspective as a coach, I had a solid middle school team once upon a time and we got up large on a team and took all our starters out and let significantly weaker kids play, and we should have.  The opposing coach pressed those kids with his starters full court and it was demoralizing to our less advanced kids that they couldn't get past half court.  I let it go on for approximately 5 minutes of game time.  End of the half, I encouraged our kids and started them again in the 3rd, same deal with that coach.  I let it go for one trip, called timeout,  then re-inserted our starting five and pressed their guts out til the final horn.  So perspective is everything.

I'd like to know the rest of the story.

I would say there needs to be class on both sides of this situation.  I would have probably done the same thing in your situation.  HOWEVER, a team that only scored 9 points for an entire game, I highly doubt they have the capacity to press a 7th grade team.

I would say the unwritten rule is the winning coach usually waits for opposing coach to pull their starters first.  Sucks because it keeps that coach from putting in kids who don't play much or at all.  BUT, if a team is getting outscored by that much then pull them.

This is ALL based on them playing their starters in the 4th qtr.  That could not be true as much as it could be.  I don't know their coach personally.

I would say out of good sportsmanship or to let your younger players get playing time.  If I was a parent of a sub who didn't play in a 94-9 game I would be upset.  There is no reason to humiliate high schoolers.  My daughter's first varsity points came in a game where they were blowing out a team and the JV kids got some minutes in the fourth quarter.  That seems to be standard operating procedure for most teams regardless of whether the other team has their starters in or not.

Agree that's the case most of the time.

This is one of the few times I am going to disagree with you Deuce.  At some point the strong among us have to show some mercy for the weak among us.

We're assuming that the KSR caller was correct, and we're also assuming all starters were still in. Depending on the objectives (besides winning) of the game, I'm not automatically pulling starters because we have a big lead.

You're kidding, correct? I would say East Ridge's starters were much weaker than any of their opponents players.

Your starters aren't my responsibility.

Man, I'm always in lock-step with you, or nearly always, but if you're up 80-6 (making up a score) and the team with 80 puts in their bottom 5, let the other team leave their starters out there to build confidence.  What are they going to do, cut it to 50?  Come on.

I'm not saying the losing team has to pull their starters. I'm just saying the winning team shouldn't automatically be expected to pull theirs at a certain point based on the score alone.

This is exactly what I'm getting at. The score alone is not an indicator of how the winning team did or should have performed.

A caller to KSR said that Pikeville still had starters in the game in the 4th.

Take that for what it’s worth.

If that caller is correct, it's very poor form on Pikeville.  But that's a big if.  I used to listen to KSR and the callers back then were all over the place in terms of accuracy.  In this instance, I hope the caller is wrong.

The caller from the holler.  Probably Watusi.

This made me laugh out loud.

Agree

I'm just stating what was said

No you are correct that the score is not an indicator of performance BUT in High School there is NO REASON to have your starters in a game like this.

Trust me I’ve been on both ends of games like this. MOST High School coaches have enough sense to pull kids in this situation.

***again I am only stating what was said. I do not know all the facts.

No reason to win a game by 85 points. Very sad for both teams. According to KHSAA Pikeville attempted 69 shots and East Ridge 16. That is nuts.

This type of stuff has always bothered me. I have been a coach. It’s not that hard to get your kids their stats and shut it down.

For the record Sacred Heart has 3-4 very lopsided games and nobody says a word so Pikeville is not alone.
I just think it’s ugly.

North Hardin beat Ft. Knox last week 94-3. No starter for North played past halftime (maybe not much in 2nd quarter either) and I specifically heard North coach tell players to run through their offensive play x amount of times before they took a shot and it had to be a layup. Score looks awful, but they didn't run it up on them.

This is where KHSAA for soccer has it at least right….. Complete at least a half, if at half or any time after half you get up by 10 goals, GAME OVER.

Basketball could do the same thing, figure out what that point total should be, let’s say hypothetically it’s 50 points for argument sake…. So when a team goes up after half or is up by 50 at halftime, GAME OVER! No one is getting anything out of a lopsided game like that to play to completion.
